Great British Architecture
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 พ.ค. 2024
Hi, I'm Daniel, a student of architectural history, and welcome to my new TH-cam channel, where I will be giving virtual tours of historic buildings across Britain.
Historic churches are the particular focus of the channel as these are the buildings that I love most. They are often also some of the oldest and most interesting buildings in most cities, towns, and villages!

A Late Medieval Wonder - St Nicholas', Denston, Suffolk
มุมมอง 7K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
A relatively unknown Perpendicular Gothic gem, Denston church is full of incredible treasures from the late medieval period. In this short video, I highlight many of these features. Please do let me know in the comments if you have any questions or any general feedback. I hope you enjoy the video.
One of Suffolk's Best Kept Secrets... St Mary's church, Hawkedon
มุมมอง 6K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
A short virtual tour of St Mary's church, Hawkedon. Regarded as one of Suffolk's best-kept secrets, this church is filled with stunning medieval stained glass, a gorgeous collection of woodwork, and many other interesting features. I hope enjoy this video. Please do comment with any questions or suggestions that you might have.
The Westminster Abbey of Suffolk... All Saints, Hawstead, Suffolk
มุมมอง 12K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
I hope you enjoy this virtual tour of All Saints Hawstead, one of my favourite churches in England. If you have any questions, then please do ask in the comments. Similarly, let me know if there is anything you think I could improve or anywhere you'd like to see. If you want to read more, then the first place to start would be the Suffolk Churches website by Simon Knott.
Such a masterful and magisterial description of British Late Medieval architecture as exemplified by this delicately beautiful church....excellently done. Subscribed!
I really love your delivery on these videos! It's light but informative and humorous. I was wondering, do u film everything by yourself? That's super impressive!
Keep going. You're ace!
Hope that you’ll make more of these long videos, they’re really serene and informative!!
You have a beautiful voice. Have you ever thought about recording audiobooks?
All I see is a young Attenborough of architecture. All the best!
I'm an atheist but I love your videos of medieval churches and castles. I can't wait to see more of them.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You have a very resonant and pleasant voice. I understand every word! Thank you for this beautiful history!
What an absolute delight too something of this quality on YT !!
Sorry to disturb you but I get the feeling you had to call this series short as it has been three months now for the final video, I thought that day you were soaked might have made you ill and i hope this is not the case. I would message on instagram but I have a problem signing up but just wondering and hope is alright. D
I cannot fault your videos Daniel, hope you don't mind me using your name and you should have more subs as your videos get aired. I have recently come back from St David's and the Coast and it is Auspicious timing that I have discovered your Channel and the Context re. Historical figures and life comes across well and is a natural skill you have. D
Hello Daniel I’m not sure if I missed your post of part 5 St David’s Cathedral or if you haven’t put it on here yet
Ep5 when?
Very well made church ! Stone with neatly laid flint seems to work well; and these stones as I have seen are used a lot in churches in Suffolk and Norfolk. Lots to see on the inside, angels and tombs. The knight effigy must be a standard design, I have seen them in churches but not in as good a condition. Excellent unspoilt building.
Why was it demolished in the 1960s? 1:37
Thank you! That was an excellent example of the sort of guided tour that opens an interested layperson's eyes to things they would otherwise have missed. Yes, what a lovely church, with quite a variety of features. I'm interested that a pagan goddess could be portrayed in a Christian church - even as an allegory. Is this common?
Daniel your knowledge is incredible. I so throughly enjoy the history you bring us!
"I'll hand over now to myself . . . " I love that, I'm going to steal it!
Daniel, you have added such joy to my life with your TH-cam videos, thank you so much, peace and love.
where did he go
I love all your videos, Daniel. Your combination of beauty and erudition is irresistible :)
Powerful provenance. Thank you. Bravo Zulu.
Fascinating! I love your videos.
The castlemartin church is interesting. It's cut into the rock for some reason. Maybe they quarried the stone from the cut to build? The tower shows some irregularities on its east face, showing the possible existence of a lost building adjoining it, or fossil remnants of the tower once being lower along with blocked doorways to the tower. Also, inside, there are around four carved faces. And the graveyard has graves from a ship that was wrecked on the coast whose remnants are visible under one of the hill forts on the coast. Keep up the good work.
Greetings from Melbourne. I'm planning a pilgrimage walk from Bury St Endunds to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in spring next year. I've extended it by a day to start in Denston in order to visit the three churches in Suffolk that you've shown us. Thank you.
My wife and I are thoroughly enjoying your videos, although as a former pastor it breaks my heart to see the sad state of some of the once beautiful churches. I suppose that’s where the Friends of the Friendless Churches comes in. Have you considered a “Go Fund Me” or some such? Finally, thanks for the “right English pansy” comment, my American wife and I had a good laugh!
Well hello! This is a very pleasant surprise. A young man who loves our sublime English heritage. I cannot put into words the magical auras I have experienced in Suffolk’s fields, lanes, marshes and woods, and enchanting little villages. Much of my childhood revolves around the Waveny Valley and South Norfolk and other disconnected parts of Suffolk such as Hoxne, Lavenham, Yoxford and Somerleyton. I’m 29, how old are you? I’d love to meet you and explore some of our country’s treasures!
Glad to have viewed your video. I believe the Etruscan burial effigies are the ancient references that influenced later Italian and other funeral monuments.
The musical interludes with landscapes are almost as delightful as your commentary.
Very interesting, thank you for sharing so much in-depth about this lovely historical church. I did wonder if was due to this family that some pubs were named after them. The Drury Pub, some roads too were given the name Drury, we have a Drury road in our town and it once had a Drury pub.
Around 40 years ago I lived in the neighbouring parish of Lawshall and visited Hawstead church to make a brass-rubbing.
Thankyou for posting this. I thoroughly enjoyed your tour of Hawstead church! As a church enthusiast myself I share your enthusiasm for these wonderful buildings. I hope that you can do some more videos.
Something dramatic in the West needs to happen for us get back to the roots of our cultural foundations and save our faith and churches.
Don't keep saying this is beautiful, that is beautiful. Your audience can decide for themselves whether they find things beautiful. Explain what we see. Maybe, occasionally, you can day *you* think it is beautiful, provided you explain *why* you think so.
Thank you Daniël, for making and sharing these videos! I enjoy it very much -although I set the speed on 75%, because I'm not a English native, fluent speaker - I suppose you recieve a lot of credits for this journey fro. your college? I like the initiative as a former teacher. One advice: Keep your hands on your back! It isn't necessary to your good performance and can put a bit of restlessnes in it, you see ... From Holland with ❤
Great stuff, thank you! Have you considered recording audio guides for churches? You could charge for these or offer them to Pateron subscribers. 🙂
What amazing videos! You are a good presenter and have showed the beautiful architecture mainly countryside. You need walking to get some beautiful old and historic buildings. It’s so exciting. I would love to get time to do the same. I love it. That is a kind of weekend I would like to get. Thanks for all those gifts! Sorry my english, I am from Brasil and I study History. I’ve loved your work. It really made my eyes shine. Keep going on. 😊
The oil refinery is known as Valero these days

Another excellent video, Daniiel. You manage to combine remarkable expertise with a delightful sense of humor. Please keep going (after those blisters heal).
I do congratulate you on an informative well presented video. Really enjoying the pilgrimage.
So well done, thank you, l have subscribed.
Daniel excelente trabajo. Me encantan tus videos!
Excellent video!
Hey, you should try directing your video titles a little better so more people can find you - I've been looking for content like this for ages and I found you through Instagram - I think adding a shorter title would up your views !
Great video Daniel, a big up to the Friends of Friendless Churches. They do wonderful work.
I think I enjoyed this episode most of all of them so far. That arts and crafts church is a real gem, and your little speech about the Great War was quite touching. One comes across these poignant references so often - there was one I came across in Oxfordshire commemorating two brothers which was terribly moving. I think too few people nowadays appreciate the terrible trauma that war caused. Glad the sun came out for the second half!
