The gift of speaking in tongues is something made available to us by the Holy Spirit who was not given to man until after Jesus ascended after His crucifixion. In 1 Corinthians 14:19 Paul writes, "I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:" So Paul, as a new testament believer is stating here that he does speak in tongues as enabled by the Holy Spirit. Also, in Jude 1:20 it says, "But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost" We also see the gift of tongues being something that the Holy Spirit makes possible for believers in 1 Corinthians 13 where Paul expounds on spiritual gifts. Romans 8:26-27 says that the Holy Spirit makes intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered. We understand by scriptures that praying in tongues is not praying in our native tongue, but praying in a heavenly language as led by the Spirit of God. What better way to pray than in the language of the Spirit of God Himself? There's context and evidence all over the Bible showing the beautiful gift of speaking in tongues being used for God's glory and also for the advantage of the believer. Praying in tongues is necessary because it is a gift given to us by God to help us build our sensitivity to the voice of God and pray His perfect will without the limitations of our natural ability to pray as men and women. As far as your statement about the Sabbath is concerned, historically yes the Sabbath was on Saturday according the Jewish Calendar during the time the accounts of the Bible were taking place. However, the Sabbath according to scripture is a spiritual principle and discipline, not simply a day. The Sabbath is God's provision for man to remove any other distraction or obligation and focus that time to devote to spending time with God and the community of believers. So the principle of the Sabbath can be engaged any day of the week. If we look at the original Hebrew work used for Sabbath in scripture for example in Isaiah 58:13 the definition of the word means: Cease, desist, rest. The Sabbath's definition has nothing to do with a particular day like Saturday or Sunday. Depending on where you live in the world, the day the Sabbath falls on may differ based on timezone, culture, etc. But the principle, taking rest time from work and other obligations to devote to God, remains the same.
