Welcome to the 2nd instalment of the Indonesia series. And yes : once again this will show that Indonesia is so so so much more than just Bali!
This time we are heading to the remote island chain known as "The Mentawai Islands" in the regency of "Sumatera" aka Sumatra in Indonesia
We start our adventure on "Sipora" the smallest of the Mentwai Islands , in the town of Tua Pejat where we plunge into the turquoise waters and pristine unspoiled nature of this little island. We will also celebrate Indonesia's 79th day of Independence here before we head back to Tua Pejat's harbor at sunrise to catch the "MS Mentawai Fast" to hop over to Siberut - the largest of the Mentawai Islands where we meet up with Jasmardi our local guide and fixer and prepare to head out deep into the jungles in search of one of Indonesia's oldest tribes " The Mentawai People" .
After breakfast and collecting a few essentials, as well as buying a few gifts for the tribe at the local market in Siberut , we then jump onto a motorbike and head deep into the heart of the island. Enroute we get caught by a massive torrential tropical downpour and are forced to take shelter in a roadside home before we transfer onto our next mode of transport on this adventure : The PomPom ( a local hollowed out tree boat) . As we cruise along the river and venture deeper and deeper into the unpoint wilderness - it becomes clear that my dream of meeting the Mentawai people is indeed going to be fulfilled.
After a 50 minute scenic cruise on the PomPom we deboard and continue our way into the jungle by foot for the final leg of our quest to meet the tribe. We trek for a good hours through thick jungle and muddy tracks to then finally just before sunset reach our hosts : a family of Sikerei shaman in the Mentawai tribe that agreed to host us in their Uma (traditional Mentawai tribe dwelling) . In the course of the next few days - I followed my host father and other members of the tribe around the jungle and their community, and tried to capture as much as possible of the amazing purity, love and communal culture of these wonderful people.
Trust me - I often had to pinch myself , to make sure that I was not dreaming- but that I was actually experiencing all these incredible adventures that felt like a pipe dream, and though you are able to witness a lot on film, there were so many occasions where I felt it would not be right to pull out my cameras and record - as it would have spoiled the intimacy and purity of those moments with the tribe. These people have no junk food, no electricity, no pollution, no crime, no prisons, no homelessness , no stress and live in total unison and harmony with nature - how dare anyone say they are "primitive" ? They are living live it its purest form - and it taught me a lot about the values of live, and the illusions and deceit of wester society and the so called "civilization"
I assure you that the time you took to watch this video will not be wasted, but that you will experience a truly magical place that must be experienced once in a lifetime - and meet a tribe that we all can learn so much from.
