A Dangerous Fall into an Abandoned Mineshaft
In this video, I explore the famous C Shaft of the Rockland Mine. The Rockland Mining Company was organized in 1853 and worked until 1870, when the company was shut down and passed into the National Mining Company. Work continued on tribute until 1880 when the mine closed for good. The Rockland Mine produced approx. 5.8 million lbs. of refined copper; and the property was worked by other mining companies, most notably the Michigan and Minesota. Rumor has it that a 1 mile long tunnel was dug connecting the Minesota, Rockland, National, and Michigan mines near the 5th level.
This video showcases the concrete foundations of the old Rockland rock house and my nerve-racking fall into the shaft itself. Never explore solo!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Upper Michigan is home to some extensively rich history. From copper and iron mining to logging and maritime shipping, the area was founded and shaped by the early days of American industry. The determination of those who came before us is a truly remarkable legacy as these pioneers literally carved the roads, highways, and precious minerals out of some of the hardest bedrock on Earth. This channel aims to pay tribute to those who came before, and to preserve the history before it is lost.
Growing up in the northern Wisconsin region gave me and my friends easy access to the woodlands of the UP. Many secrets lie in the woods beyond as it seems every gravel road has a new adventure lurking around the corner. If you enjoy this content, consider subscribing, as it lets me know that my interests in this incredible area are shared amongst others. Thanks for watching!

Unearthing the Hidden Tunnel at the Peninsula Mine

This tunnel exposes some beautiful rock colors while the hike sheds light on some of the terrain the company had to tame in order to commence mining operations. Very cool! Might be a different system, but at the plant I work at one of our water treatment plants (cleans up water to use in the plant - not sewage) uses cation and anion exchangers as the final step to de-ionize the water (takes out any charged particles) The cation is positively charged so it attracts all the negativity charged particles in the water, then the anion is negatively charged so it attracts all the positively charged particles. Once the cat/an-ion exchangers are exhausted (all used up) you can take them out of service and regenerate them with an acid (for the cation) and base (anion)

Interesting, this was a huge copper mine that used chemicals to separate the copper from the rock leading to widespread biohazard effects in the woods (there are many signs still warning of this standing today). If you look at a satellite view of the facility, you will see hundreds of acres of barren land where the trees still don’t grow

Was stationed at the 665th AC&W Sq. Jan 71-Mar72. Worked in Radar Ops.....scope dope. Saw a few ufo's on our Buic radar scopes .....most likely canadian bush pilots punching holes in the clouds. On a side note myself and another airman Manning saw a woman?ghost in a white ankle length night gown, walk into Lake Superior down by the hotel on the beach in Eagle River, and just flat out disappeared. Also enjoyed the wildlife on the fire trail down to Gratiot Lake from the radar site, we'd see. Usually bears on their war to the garbage dump.

This is fascinating, first of all, thank you for your service, it's incredible that you know this place and can give insight to the history of the base while it was in operation, I was hoping people more knowledgeable than me would comment on this video. I am blown away by the amount of Ghost stories stemming from the Upper Peninsula and Lake Superior region, there is something mysterious and alluring about it. Did you enjoy your time living on the base? Were tensions ever high while you were on duty?

@@Sparrow_Outdoors123 Like most small USAF sites, with around 100 stationed there you become part of a family of sorts. Other than dealing with an average of 360 inches of snow yearly, Calumet AFS was tension free. Didn't see one fight the whole time i was there. Senior enlisted for the most part lived down in base housing, with their wives and children. Most of us aka first termers spent free time exploring the local villages, playing hockey at the Calumet armory , or practicing drinking at the NCO club on site. There was a basketball gym and 1or 2 lane bowling alley on the site. You might want to look at the Wall of Silver video on You Tube . fascinating tale of treasure on the Upper Penisula.

Beautiful colours! Unfortunate that they only come once a year, but I suppose that's why they're so special

Danger Will Robinson! A friend was exploring a cave in NM, unknowingly stepped onto a scree-covered ice shelf. CRACK! and down he went, into an icy torrent. Gave thanks to Jesus that he was roped-up. Other than that caution, nice find.

That sounds terrifying, God was definitely watching out for him that day. Thanks for the heads up, we are much more prepared and wise than we were back in this video, we didn't quite know what we were getting into back then....

@@Sparrow_Outdoors123 Thank you for the response. One of my "Adventure Mentors" shared this pearl with me before my first Technical Climb: Live and Learn. Learn and Live. Came in handy in the Himal: The Ice Wall on Ama Dablam, tail-end of Winter. Can't anticipate them all but... Risk is inherent in every true Adventure. Wouldn't be the same without it. I put it thusly: You only live once. The coward dies a thousand deaths, the Brave (and stupid) only once. Expect the unexpected and be prepared. I GUESS. LOL 👍

@GAMakin Wise words. I imagined Indiana Jones was speaking while reading your comment. I was always drawn to the unpredictability of adventures like this and delving into the unknown. Often it is the stories of what went wrong or what we did not expect that linger in our memories long after the adventure is over.

@@Sparrow_Outdoors123 A considered opinion of one of my Aussie buddies on Indiana Jones: "If it wasn't for his super-human "abilities", Bloke would have been History before he finished his first adventure. Only in the movies, yuh know?" I agree. After surviving one's first stupid moves, one tends to be casual about "things". Safe in the realization that, if one is sober and attentive (taking care of business, as it were) it is more likely that one might expire under the wheels of a trolley, if caught looking the other way. Free climbers -- like Alex Honnold (Spiderman), have my considered admiration. But despite the NAGGING challenge, I have never truly been tempted to explore the "possibilities" (Look out below!). I watched him climb -- and wondered aloud: Which god does he pray to? I will burn incense... and double-check my crotch harness before a climb. Thank you very much. Stay safe. ✋ AHIMSA
