damn i wish i knew this a week ago.
What I don’t understand is that you must not use bleach cause it contains water and water feeds the mold. But the mixture of borax or common dish soap plus WATEE is advised 😳🥸🤔 Help me out please
We understand that the proper techniques for treating mold can get confusing but the overall consensus is that bleach is a very toxic product and isn't the best for treating mold. Most mold specialists agree with this as well as the EPA. Here is the link below. We hope this helps. www.epa.gov/mold/should-i-use-bleach-clean-mold
You need 8% hydrogen peroxide. You don’t say anything about self protection or vacuuming the item/area with a HEPA filter vac before begining. Watch Michael Rubino’s You Tube video!!
Most store bought hydrogen peroxide products are a 3% solution so I'm not sure where a homeowner can purchase an 8% solution that you suggest but if you can offer a suggestion that would be great. We personally have never heard of or used a solution that is 8% so we suggest the homeowner making sure that this strength of peroxide is safe for them to use at home. We use a professional grade that is 22% peroxide but that is not recommended for for use by homeowners as it requires extensive knowledge on how to use the product and wearing full PPE which consists of tyvek suits, full face respirators and gloves for protection and we always HEPA vacuum prior to using a cleaning product but then again we are remediating areas much larger in size than the 10sf that is considered safe for homeowners to tackle on their own. Most homeowners are probably not going to own an $800 professional grade HEPA vacuum such as the ones our crews use but they may be able to rent one at a home depot store for a small fee. For small areas under 10sf that is considered safe for a homeowner to clean themselves per the EPA, normally you need simple cleaning solutions that don't require actual full PPE but it is always wise to protect yourself, especially if you are allergic or sensitive to mold. For a homeowner cleaning an area of mold that is 10sf or less, they can purchase a paper mask or an N95 mask and rubber gloves at most drug stores or a Home Depot store. We did watch a few videos of Michael Rubino and he appears to be knowledgeable as a mold specialist if you want more information specific to mold.
10 sq ft of mold is a lot of mold 1:46
Correction: Standard grocery store bleach is 5% sodium hypochlorite. The concentrated bleach is between 8-12%.
I ues bleach on mold on white silicone around the shower in a few places, after moving in a another house. I can tell you that the mold has not come back and this was done 8 months ago , so bleach works and kills the mold spores 👍👍👍.
I akways use bleach. ...even on my mold infected toe . It takes 3 days to dissolve it under the nail. My dog got ringworm alllover her body. I did not notice bc of her thick fur. I shaved off the fur and shampooed her 2x a day for a week with diluted bleach.....it worked......... GONE...😅
I am wondering why you would argue that bleach doesn't treat the "root" system of mold but then tell people to use hydrogen peroxide. The same stuff applies for vinegar and peroxide. The vinegar is an acid and the peroxide is a base. Bleach is just a higher pH. The reason you have to get a "commercial" version of the peroxide is because the concentration is too low whereas the locally available bleach would be effective enough at its 2 percent concentration. The peroxide you have in your hands is also mostly water and by your logic would "feed the mold" the same can be said for the vinegar. Do you have a scientific reason why we shouldn't use bleach on mold? In the microbiology lab I found that sodium hypochlorite solutions were most effective against not only mold but bacteria as well. Similar peroxide was not as effective. I would argue that the homeowners calling you did not let the bleach soak into the porous material and did not remove the moisture feeding the mold growth as you mentioned. but it wasn't the bleach's fault. And PLEASE do not FAN A MOLD SOURCE. That is the best way to spread spores. Seeing as your customers have not effectively killed the mold I am sure even with the peroxide solution they won't let it soak in and would then be spreading spores around. DEHUMIDIFY THE AREA! Don't fan stuff around!
We appreciate your input so have provided a link where the EPA states that it does not recommend the use of bleach to clean for mold and the toxicity of bleach itself. We hope this helps! www.google.com/search?q=epa+use+of+bleach+to+kill+mold&oq=epa+use+of+bleach+to+&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqBwgBECEYoAEyBggAEEUYOTIHCAEQIRigATIHCAIQIRigATIHCAMQIRigATIHCAQQIRirAjIHCAUQIRirAjIHCAYQIRifBTIHCAcQIRifBTIHCAgQIRifBTIHCAkQIRifBdIBCjE3MzAzajBqMTWoAgiwAgE&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
@@sagerestoration4596just when did we listen to EPA...???
great info ! thank you!
Thank you glad we could help!
You do understand that vinegar even 30% is a water based product? You do understand that hydrogen peroxide is sold as a water base product. So bleach will only clean a hard non porous surface? Help me to understand. From webMD ..There are solutions available that are advertised as “pure” hydrogen peroxide. But these household options are made up of only 3% hydrogen peroxide and 97% water. Food grade or industrial-strength solutions have 35% or more hydrogen peroxide (and 65% water) and are extremely dangerous. These are not typically kept in homes...
What about what to use on roofs of houses...ir you spray bleech is it toxic and comes back?
We think bleach would be fine to use on your roof or siding since the materials are outside but a better alternative might be to use a mold removal solution purchased from Home Depot etc or to simply use a borax and water solution.
So water from bleach is bad but water from; dishwashing liquid and water is good. Got it
Says bleach has water in it, to use vinegar instead 😱 like vinegar not full of water. also neither will penetrate into sheet rock and inside wood framing. Better to just get professional mold remediation chemicals. Some things just don't work using natural products.
Do you scrub the surfaces before you hepa vacuum? Do you just fog the ducts? Or you actually do a duct cleaning?
We normally HEPA vacuum surfaces first and then apply an antimicrobial cleaner and follow up with another round of HEPA vacuuming as warranted. We normally recommend air duct cleaning as applicable, but no longer do this ourselves and contract it out to a company that specializes in this. We do recommend fogging the ducts after they are cleaned with an antimicrobial cleaner.
Air scrubbers only otherwise you have to change filters and clean that humidifier every time
Awesome! Who knew, thanks!
So don’t go into a pool then it’s bleach 😂
Well.....EXTREMELY diluted anyhow.
I wish y’all were in georgia
Hopefully you don't have flooded wood floors but if you do we wish we could help you out but surely there are some reputable and good restoration contractors there that you can call in your area.
Vinegar is proved it doesn’t kill all the surface mold
Hi Steve, we don’t use vinegar to clean for mold but use professional products instead. Can you provide us your source so we can be up to date on this. Normally we recommend to our homeowner clients to use vinegar on areas that are less than 10-25 square feet as a home products based option.
I had the blackest nastiest mold sprouting everywhere. My landlord rented to me and promised to move it before I moved in. After moving in I kept getting sick so I had to clean it myself. I live in Quebec where landlords can do as they please. Anyways. Here’s my remedy TIMELINE: 3 days INGREDIENTS: magic eraser, peroxide, vinegar, and no name household cleaner with bleach. DISCLAIMER: the household cleaner with bleach is the actual name of the product. It’s made by maxi/no frills/Loblaws. It is similar to comet or Ajax cleaning product. The bleach was used after to remove the stains not to kill the mold. If you use the bleach alone you’ll spread the mold. So basically I used a spray bottle and mixed peroxide and vinegar. I sprayed the mold. Let it sit for an hour. Spray again. Let sit for 15 mins. Scrub with gloves and where a swim googles or eye protection because it got in my eye and fucked my eye up. For tiles at this stage it’s all done. For sheet rock or dry wall repeat for three days but with this additional step Mix one cup vinegar with a whole jar of the powdered bleach mentioned above. It should be slightly less thick than toothpaste. Wear gloves and spread over the stained areas. Leave over night. Next day spray with vinegar and peroxide. Scrub away. Run away with magic eraser. All the black will literally disappear. I mean completely. The mold was there two years with me. And five years with the other tenant. Completely gone. Spray weekly with vinegar if you’re paranoid. Spray your shower at least every two weeks to prevent new roots. Keep home clean. Use extractor fan in the bathroom if there’s one. All that good stuff that gets rid of extra moisture. House plants etc. Optional ingredients: tea tree oil
never mix bleach with vinegar or any other soap except laundry detergent. You are lucky to be alive. research it.
The company I hired for my 2nd mold remediation was supposed to use Benefect Decon 30, but I caught them using bleach. I snuck into my home after they had left for the day and found a spray pump with bleach in it. I was so mad and fired them that same day.
We are glad that you had the knowledge to know that the contractor was using an incorrect product but am sorry you had to go through an experience like that. We hope you find a replacement company that you can trust to use an appropriate product like Benefect!
How do I sanitize a travel, trailer freshwater tank and the water lines before putting it into storage so that mold doesn’t grow in the faucet and the water lines in the freshwater tank thank you
We think there should be a solution you can purchase to flush the system with. We recommend getting in touch with the dealer or manufacturer for more details on this.
What do you think of concombrium?
We personally have never used this product although I am familiar with it being used for mold remediation in our industry. After reading the Safety Data Sheet for this product it appears that is a safe and user friendly product.
You look great!
Hi. I'm in Washington state I am needing to get a scent out of the carpets and looking for a company that uses a "sealed" HEPA filter commercial vacuum cleaner in my area. I looked on TH-cam to try to find this mold remediation is the only ones that seem to have them. Do you by chance have any ideas for me? Thank you.
We aren’t familiar with anyone in your area but you might contact some local top carpet cleaners in your area or a local Servpro as they should have that type of equipment. Hope this helps.
Lemon or lemon extract removes mold and it never comes back.
Isn’t hydrogen peroxide bleach?
It is not bleach but does have a bleaching affect.
What's a good ratio of water to vinegar when cleaning the walls and also can vinegar be mixed with some kind of fragrant smelling product to reduce the vinegar smell in a room?
I own a restoration company and I can 💯 vouch for her. Great and factual advice!
Thank you Craig! Where is your company located?
Hi bleach 99% water there maybe 🤔 so you said your feeding bleach ok then next sentence use water and soap ok
Thanks for hurting my ears with zero information😂😂
Vinegar works the best lasts long time..
We can agree with you on that.
Some people might need to be aware that vinegar is not good to use on some surfaces
That sounds like good information for people can you expand on what types of surfaces you shouldn’t use vinegar on?
I used pool bleach mixed with baking soda and a sprayer and scrubbed my crawlspace with that solution. Ran a fan for the evening then the next day fully encapsulated it with a dehumidifier. Haven’t had an issue sense. Cheap easy and can get the supplies at Home Depot or lowes.
Glad to hear you got your crawl space cleaned as it can be a pretty big job to do yourself. Just want to clarify that you encapsulated with an anti-microbial or anti-moisture encapsulant and then dried it out with a dehumidifier?
@@sagerestoration4596 I am curious as well.
Clorox/hh bleach is materiall than "more than 99% water". I don't have a bottle handy but 6% sodium hypochlorite comes to mind. And what bureaucrat is coming to my house to stop me from cleaning more than 10 sf for mold? Same one who polices the Do Not Remove upholstery labels?
Your probably correct about a government bureaucrat not coming to your house but I was just stating the government recommendation to provide general information as it pertains to mold removal.
Terrible audio!
poor audio, couldn't hear anything. Please use a better mic.
SageRestoration, I have a couple questions about stopping mildew/mold growth ... Can soda crystals and white vinegar remove and get rid of mold and mildew in tile grout and on solid walls? If so how should it be applied and what is the procedure??
Tim-Bor is a product like Borax that is good to use on moldy porous surfaces. I think you spray it on with water. It’s a powder.
Hi! I am hearing impaired and I can't hear anything you're saying. I've got the volume turned up all the way.
BE AWARE!!! On the subject of bleach, FYI along with straight ammonia, bleach and DISHWASHING LIQUID is a BAD idea too. This might have been one of Heloise's Helpful Hints that I kept in mind when I used to clean my father's rental properties when I was a kid and then when I set up bachelor-style housekeeping in my first apartment. FYI It is recommended to pour 1 or 2 cups of bleach and a 1/2 or 3/4 of a box of baking soda down all your drains once in a while, maybe 3 or 4 times a year maybe more depending on whether they smell. As far as inadvertently creating any poisonous fumes by mixing bleach and dishwashing liquid in the kitchen sink, wait till the dishes are done and out of the sink with no lingering dishwashing detergent in the drain. Run lots of hot water into the drain well-before even OPENING any bleach in the kitchen! IMO bleach doesn't belong anywhere near the kitchen. I keep most household cleaning stuff under the kitchen sink with the notable exception of bleach. I don't want it in anywhere near other chemicals. Even though I use 'Sprayway' (aerosol) glass cleaner and not Windex with ammonia in a leaky spray bottle and I don't really clean with ammonia anyway. With so many bleach alternatives available I would use almost anything BUT bleach in the washer anyway. True bleach is really the alpha and omega of serious germ killers so I'll always keep a gallon around the house but more for cleaning, for laundry, not so much.... Cleaning those apartments I used to rent those big, fiberglass pro-type ''Rug Doctor'' carpet cleaning machines. I think they held 3-4 gallons of hot water(?) maybe more? Along with ''Rug Doctor''- brand detergent and ''Rug Doctor'' ''Anti-Foam'', I would always add lots and lots of bleach to the proceedings. Because this hot water, rug detergent and bleach mixture could be counted on to clean and kill most germs and to bring some of the worst-looking carpets back from the dead. For years I never considered whether or not mixing bleach with that commercial carpet detergent was potentially hazardous or not. Since nothing seemed to happen when and I haven't suffered any ill effects since then I guess me and the other maintenance guys too got away without any problems. Maybe the lesson is if you mix bleach with ammonia, dishwashing liquid or anything that might create some caustic even potentially dangerous fumes you'd probably feel it pretty quickly in your throat or even your lungs? Immediately after the initial sensation of singe-ing your nostril hairs...
Will this work on wallpapered walls in the bathroom?
Wallpaper is normally semi-porous or porous depending on the type of wallpaper. It is best to avoid using peroxide as it can have a bleaching affect and maybe affect the ink or coloring if the wallpaper. Wiping down with a vinegar solution would most likely work best.
There's only one thing that completely removes mold without ever it coming back (and without even cleaning after, because it literally makes it disappear, in about 10 minutes). Sodium hydrogen chloride. Just be really careful with it, it will remove the color of any fabric in seconds, it's like bleach on steroids.
Can you use these solutions on Antique Furniture?
You can depending on the type of wood or fabric you are cleaning. I would avoid using bleach and start with HEPA vacuuming the furniture first. It's important to note here that this type of vacuum is not the same as a regular household vacuum or shop vac and you do not want to use these types of vacuums as they will spread the mold spores. You can purchase a HEPA vacuum or look into renting one or hire a local restoration company to clean the furniture for you. HEPA vacuums have an internal HEPA filter that collects mold, dust or allergen particles and does not spread these contaminants back into the air. I have also attached a TH-cam video I saw that demonstrates how to clean moldy furniture that you might find helpful. Let us know if you have anymore questions and good luck! th-cam.com/video/eIW6i34pmBg/w-d-xo.html
So bleach has water, so does vinegar, borax and H2O2 and guess what? Water.
Whatever, but Bleach doesn’t work.
I left a similar comment. makes no sense. just buy processing mold remover to be safe
I was even more confused after watching this video. For mold on drywall, I would like to know if a hydrogen peroxide spray is best, before scrubbing. But I can't use a fan to dry it? And what ration hydrogen peroxide to water? Then you said that water feeds the root system. ???
If there's mold on drywall, the drywall should be cut out and replaced. There's no getting to all the roots of mold in a porous material like drywall.
Household hydrogen peroxide is almost entirely water.. And it’s unstable. As soon as air touches it eg when you take off the lid, even more becomes water. Take care using chemicals. Don’t breathe the vapour and always use gloves and eye protection. Never ingest any chemical substance and if in doubt seek medical advice. Just saying…
Thanks for providing good information without trying to sell me your "special" formula. Thumbs up!
Your welcome!
how do you remove mold from clothes? we were in a home with black mold and also mold in ac vent system. so we are sure our clothing was contamineted. we moved out. thank you
We suggest washing them using Borax as a laundry detergent. If they are severely stained you will probably need to dispose of them.
You can use bleach to clean and get rid of the surface of mold. Not the Roots. To kill the roots just use a mold killer primer. It drys and acts as a moisture barrier.
Bleach is 99% water 🤔🤔 take a sip I’m trynna see some
