How big of a tank for 2/3 ? Maybe 4
I love my 🐹
Where did you get the cage and tank from?
I got a deep 20 gallon tank and topper for my pair after doing a lot of research. I got the “minimum” I saw in my research because I didn’t have a ton of space or cash. Of course, weeks after getting them all settled with tons of bedding and as much enrichment as I could manage, I find out that many (not all) sources say the minimum is 20 gallons PER INDIVIDUAL. I’ve had them 4 months and so far, they seem very healthy and happy SO LONG as they have lots of enrichment. The biggest factor seems to be bedding. I fill the 20 gallon tank as far as I can manage with a mix of hay, aspen, and paper substrate. They create awesome tunnel systems and hideaways and seem secure and active. So, I know more space would be ideal, but for now, they seem very happy in this setup. It’s not impossible for a 20 gallon tank to be adequate for 2 happy gerbils, IMO. I’m saving for a 40 gallon enclosure now but I’m not in a big rush to upend them when they’re doing so well!
Yes I have my two gerbils in a 20 gallon as well. My son really wanted gerbils (I'm the one that takes care of them and he mainly watches them when I interact with them or when they're in their tank) and that was the biggest size they had at the store. I've filled the bedding almost as high as the tank goes and they have a sand bath, toys and lots of chewables and a variety of snacks including fresh produce I buy for them. They're happy, curious, enjoy being handled, will take food out of my hand, will crawl into my hand and will let me pick them up without any sort of fear, they're very active and look healthy and bright eyed, they get along with each other well, etc. They haven't really created any sort of elaborate tunnel system yet, but what they've been doing is basically deepening their sleeping burrow every day and I wake up each morning and it's a little bit wider and more carved out looking. As I'm falling asleep, I often see them shoving their nose around in their bedding near where they sleep, rearranging things yet again. Something I have learned from raising rodents is that everyone either thinks what you are doing is never enough or there are people who think they can keep 5 gerbils in a tiny Katee plastic cage no problem. There's kind of no in between. I do want to upgrade to a 40 gallon tank but right now they seem contented and used to their space and I don't want to change things for them too rapidly, as they seem happy with both each other and with human company. Gerbils can't really tell us "I want my house to be a different size", but you can do things like look at how they interact with each other, you, and their environment. Do they like you? Are they warming up to you? Do they want to explore and be active? Are they social with you and with their cage mate? Are they eating and drinking plenty? Do they like each other? Are they doing their natural things like digging and chewing? If so, they're fine. I do think bigger (to an extent) is better, but sometimes we fall short of perfection, and I do think a 20 gallon tank is ok with a lot of care and variety with things like chewables, various textures to dig in and good dietary variety. I'm a stay at home mom with a very independent child, so I spend a lot of time with them and am giving them new things to do frequently, and they are doing very well and are remarkably human friendly.
I’m having a hard time finding a tank topper that fits a 20 gallon long. Do you have any suggestions on where I can find one or is DIY my only option?
Would gerbils do okay with parakeets? Sometimes my parakeets are quite noisy and I didn't know if this would bother gerbils. However I usually have a blanket over my parakeets so they are quiet.
Loved the video and hit like. Can anyone offer some advice here? OKX has my USDT TRX20 stored with the recovery phrase [ clean party soccer advance audit clean evil finish tonight involve whip action ]. How do I move it to Poloniex or OKX?
I am getting 2 gerbils in the new year and I want to know if this sand is ok; BUCATSTATE hamster sand, No-Dust chinchilla Dust bath with pour spout (Flower smell)
@@sarahobraitis4840 hi, it looks okay to me ! The bag states 100% natural desert sand. I haven't tried it myself, but if it seems too dusty don't continue to use it, their lungs are so sensitive to dust and it can cause respiratory issues.
How long do you think I should wait until I attempt to pick up my gerbils? I have had them for a little over a week now, they are coming up to me when they see me and are taking treats and even slightly climbing into my hands. I believe they are maybe two months old at the very most, and they also seem very happy in their enclosure (they are burrowing, eating etc.) so I’m wondering when I should begin to try and pick them up? I’ve tried a few times with one and he does keep running away, but he doesn’t hide, just moves away.
@@riddlussy3109 young gerbils are very curious, but also very skittish and darty if that makes sense. You can place your hand out, palm up or palm down, and let them walk on you, then gently lift your hand. Sometimes they jump off, sometimes they explore more. You can also offer them a treat when they are on or in your hand, and then continue on from there.
I got my hamster while having 0 idea how to take care of her and now got everything necessary for her to thrive. I was kinda ready to get everything for her in the first place anyway haha.
Hi, I feel bad for asking, but I need some help. USDT TRX20 and my recovery phrase [ clean party soccer advance audit clean evil finish tonight involve whip action ] are in my OKX wallet How do I move it to Poloniex or OKX?
I have a tank, but it’s really thin. That’s the problem. I can’t find any cage just that fit perfectly on top of it. So I’m gonna have to make one DIY.
@KiwiFlopsHere yes, you will likely have to make a wooden floor to fit on the cage, then cut a hole out for tank access, and secure the cage to the wooden floor.
We bought 2 Mongolian gerbils at the same pet store. Put them in a 75g tank. They tried to kill each other. So I don't agree they are better together. I would also recommend not getting one of those balls you put the gerbil in so they can roll around the floor. One of the gerbils broke his leg and died a few days later from being inside one of those balls. Our surviving gerbils name is Groot and he is almost 3 years old. I also recommend paper bedding over wood chips. Wood chips have lots of dust. He will eat millet out of my hand. He also knows his name. Pretty smart critter.
@@Xt1000 a couple points: gerbils can declan at any time, but the social benefits of them being together outweigh any negatives, like the potential of declanning. I'm sorry for your situation, sometimes the warning signs leading up to a declan are not noticed and things can change quickly with gerbil hierarchies. I will continue to advocate for gerbils to be together, in the wild they live in large groups, in captivity it can be trickier so groups of 2 are best. Yes hamster balls are the literal devil, I despise them with everything in me.. no pet should be in those balls, hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, etc. No no no. Personally way more dust comes off my paper bedding than the aspen wood chips, pine can be dusty and should never be used. Aspen is great and the one I get is made by living world and is literally dust fee, it doesn't exist. Hay can also be dusty. I find all three work best for the ultimate tunnel building experience. Thanks for watching and commenting, love the name groot - your gerbil sounds cute!
I'm thinking about building a tank topper -- yours looks like regular wood, does that not get all soiled and dirty?
@@jeremymcpherson007 it get soiled and dirty, however its coated with melamine so everything wipes off without getting absorbed. They don't chew it as its a flat floor surface and would be awkward for them. For a platform or anything inside the bedding, uncoated wood is best !
I tried my best to get my gerbil a friend but after a long time of trying and many, MANY videos showing how to do it I just couldn’t, they fought and bit and the other one was just really not cooperating so I took her back and now it’s just one gerbil, but I take well care of her, her terrarium is huge and she’s doing great ❤️❤️
@@Oceanic._.Dragonz.official sometimes thats okay! Not every gerbil will be the same, they have different personalities. You are a great owner for trying, thats all you can do. Some gerbils just aren't social, but you don't know until you try.
@ aw Ty I always thought I had done something wrong but I guess not :)
@@Oceanic._.Dragonz.official its always best to try, and you did. Hopefully you can alleviate some guilt knowing you did your best!
Hi!! I reached out to you trhough your email. 😊
I just got my 2 male gerbils today, when i picked them up they seemed to be doing fine in their carrier. When i put them in the tank the first 2 hours were going fine, then i noticed they were chasing one another and scenting them on their backs. I do not know if this will turn into fighting or if its normal since its the first day for them. They did have a 2.5+ hour drive back to my home so thats stressfull. Should i wait and see what their behaviour will turn into? or do i already separate them? They do not (yet) fight in a ball or bite each other, they do sniff each others mouths? I really hope they will get along😭🙏
@@tyscha6102 if they are brother, that means they are littermates from the beginning. I don't think they would immediately declan, but the new environment could be causing issues. Its best to keep a minimal setup initially, low bedding, minimal chews and hide houses, and then add them in over time and see how they respond. Could be a case of too much going on too fast.
@TheGerbilVine Thankyou for your quick response. They are not brothers but they were kept in the same cage. I changed the whole tank to low bedding, houses etc. I did double the chews and sand baths because they were fighting over small things
@@tyscha6102 oh interesting, them being so young and with similar coats i assumed they were littermates. How long were they together before you got them ? I would honestly remove all items they are trying to claim, and try again in a week or 2 and see how it goes.
What size tank is good? In cm please, I don't use gallons nor inches.😊
@@tyscha6102 hi! Minimum I would recommend would be 45cm by 92 cm by 45cm ( which is 18x36x18 inches ), that size would be a 40 gallon. Look for something at least 92cm long, and least 45cm wide and tall.
@@TheGerbilVine Thankyouuu!
I've been trying to pick up the friendlier of the two of my gerbils, there enclosure is on the ground and we have a little cardboard play area in the front, they both will come up to the palm of my and take a piece of food, but when I try to cup me hands under them like in the video, they just run away. your gerbils are super calm and slow moving, for me there ether standing still or zzzzoooooooommm how do you do it? also we got our gerbils off someone else who said there already tamed, and showed pictures of them being held but it seems impossible to pick them up how (they've also moved fairly recently, like 2 weeks ago)
@@CoderKai hi! When I filmed this video my boys were adult gerbils! They had been through the crazy running, darting and dashing era - which was their baby, adolescent and teen years. It took a long time for them to be super chill and mellow. They could just have different personalities too! Some are more nervous, especially in open spaces. They could very well be hand tamed previously, but sometimes they may need some grace to adjust to the new surroundings and smells. I think you're doing excellent by offering them treats, eventually they will get to the point of sitting in your hand. It just takes some time! Are your gerbils young by any chance ?
@@TheGerbilVine I dont know how old they are but there not super young, when we got them we got a good deal on Facebook marketplace the previous owner just said they were old enough to mate. and they will come right up to my hands and get a piece of food and they seem pretty tame but they dont sit on my hand to eat the food, they usually take it back to there food stash or eat it in the corner. after I made this comment I tried picking the more chill one up and she just tried to dig though my hands so I put her back down and gave her a treat I have done this several more times and one time recently I didnt immediately put her back down and she kind of realized like "oh this isn't so bad" but after a second jumped down, I have no idea what im doing to be honest
@@CoderKai they may just not like being handled yet! You're doing the right things, just give it time. Keep being patient and consistent, they will come around.
Hi, I just brought home 2 gerbils this past Friday (my first time having gerbils). I’m learning slowly on caring for them. My question is they go to the bathroom everywhere within their 40 gallon tank there’s no one spot that I see that they like to use. I have a sand bath set up for them and they use that also. With them going randomly throughout the tank is there any way for me to train them to narrow down where they go? Also I’m trying to get them comfortable with touch and being held, one is really good with coming to me and stepping onto my palm allowing me to pick him up but every time I pick him up he poops and pees on me 🤦♀️ . Is there a way to lessen this from happening?
@@corilynn3378 congratulations on your new friends ! If they are young gerbils, they certainly will adapt to using the sand eventually.. it takes time. As they get older, they still go in their burrows and make the occasional mess elsewhere, but they will mostly use the sand. I have a video on tips and tricks for sand training your gerbil, it may be of help. I will link it underneath this comment. They are just nervous! Gerbils are a prey animal and can be skittish to start with, different gerbils also have different personalities. Some like to be handled, some don't. I think offering treats in the palm of your hand will encourage them to get comfortable and not run away. Eventually they will just sit right in your hand and happily eat treats :) Be calm, let them approach you, and don't scoop them up, let them explore you, get used to your hands, it will help in the long run :).

@@tammyhubbard2718 I'm so sorry this is happening, I understand how it can be stressful and scary. Once gerbils are separated for an extended period of time, it's best to reintroduce them via a split tank. They can forget their clan mate if its been a certain amount of time where they have been separated. I did a split tank with my gerbil after his brother passed away, and it went really well. He was a submissive gerbil out of the previous pair, and he never turned dominant or aggressive. It took weeks of me swapping their sides and bedding over, and I set up a camera to monitor their interactions as I couldn't watch them 24/7. They interacted well in the split tank, and my older gerbil was so happy when they finally met, after him sleeping up against the mesh with them on the other side. He was just happy for company. I introduced them in a neutral space ( free roam area with no objects), and from there I took away the divider in the tank, and upgraded their bedding, toys, hides, accessories, gradually over time. I wonder if something specific in the environment could be causing confrontational issues? Has anything changed recently that they could be fighting over ? Its a tricky situation too as they are so close in age, and father and son, so likely both would want to assert dominance over each other. Who is the more dominant gerbil in your opinion, the son or the dad? I would keep them separate for a day or two, and then set up a split tank ( 20 gallon tank, with a metal divider in the middle, so each gerbil has a 10 gallon half, add in a couple inches bedding, water bottle, a hide if you want, the split tank isn't meant to be fun, but to encourage interactions between the gerbils in a safe space.) Absolutely do not put them back together though, I don't think it would go very well given their aggressive behavior towards one another. :(
@@tammyhubbard2718 as a follow up, here is a great resource that shows you step by step how to make a split tank, and a little more information about it. gerbilcare.co.uk/bonding/
We are having a hard time finding a good Breeder here in Southern Minnesota. Any advice as to who we can speak to?
Type of wood to make the platform out of? Does it matter?
@@tangeli7434 it doesn't really matter! There's a rule that you shouldn't use pine bedding because the dust can be harmful for them, but if you're making a wooden platform, the pine dust would be a non issue. I would recommend pine, aspen, oak, any wood would work!

I THINK IM GETTING A GERBILL GUYS
I had gerbils as a kid, they were awesome little pets. Unfortunately at that time there wasn’t as much information on the right type of care/enrichment. They still lived good long lives but looking back their cage was not as big as it should’ve been and we didn’t give them as much enrichment. I was only 12 though. Hopefully when I move I can have gerbils again and give them the right size enclosure with lots of enrichment though
My gerbils always loved both chasing and earing crickets.

Cages with levels aren't recommended as gerbils can fall and aren't the best with balance and they are burrowers, not really climbers. They can, but aren't built for climbing.. Do you have 11 gerbils in 1 cage?! That seems absurd to me.
I thought the minimum was 7" ? That's what I was told *everywhere*
For gerbils I'm sure this standard can vary by country, in Canada we don't really have set standards. From my own personal research and experience, I would do a minimum 10 inch wheel. I like the 12 best and is what I buy and use.
Got it! I use a 7.5" wheel and haven't had problems, but I'll make sure to be on the look out from now on if they look like they're too curved! Also, my gerbils are a bit younger, not quite Pups but not quite adults, so they're a liiiittle smaller But I don't know if that means anything 😅 Sorry about the ramble
@@Icey_FoxVB age and size is definitely something to take into consideration! I like when they can run flat, with tail not too curves. To me it seems more natural. And I buy a big wheel to start so I don't have to upgrade later, which of course costs more money haha
This channel deserves more subscribers and viewers :)
Aww, thank you so much!
Nobody gives their gerbils a huge play-space in the house to roam around in with a lot of stuff including a huge wheel? Then put them back in their tank to spend the night? Why leave gerbils in tanks unless you are not home?
What are you even asking questions about? My gerbils are in their tank all the time unless I bring them out to free roam.
Looks so fun
Hiya. Just wondering how yo cut the Melamine in the middle? Love your videos by the way! I’m currently getting a large topper for my tank as it’s only 26L and hopefully I can make the whole thing burrowing space for them!
Hey! I cute the wood using a handheld saw. You could use a jigsaw or something similar, just created an outline and saw it out! Sounds like you've got a great mindset going into gerbil owning. They are lucky to have you!
Hi love the video i was wondering do they ever bite at the metal cage since I want to get one but scared of them escaping
Hey! Thanks for the video love. They sometimes will bite at the bars, very infrequently, and they don't have strong enough teeth to chew through the metal.
My dad and auntie when they were young loved pets and my auntie had a hamster and my dad with a gerbil .My auntie said I bet my hamster could beat up your gerbil and they put them together in a cage MY DADS GERBIL RIPPED OFF THE HAMSTERS EAR😭💀
Thats a horrible story.
@@TheGerbilVine oh .
My gerbil ate her family 😅so she is by herself but we have tried many times to find a pair for her and she just prefer by herself !!!! But she is one of a kind 😂
Oh...well.. I don't have words for this.
actually,, youre AMAZING!!! my parents and i were nervous about opening the front cage (we have the top and the.. front,, that are able to be opened etc etc) but as soon as i opened the latch and put my hand through, they instantly opened up, and even started playing with me!!! ive been working my butt off these past 3 days to try to get them as comfortable with my family as possible, and so far.. slowly, it's been making progress!! thank you!! :)
I'm so happy that you've found the video helpful, and been able to make progress with your gerbils! Good for you, it takes work, but when results happen its so gratifying !
Thank you for trying to spread a very important message. Unfortunately most ppl who walk into a petstore to buy an animal like a commodity, have zero idea what they're doing.
I should get my gerbils a new wheel
My gerbils lived for 5 years and had 1 fight I thought I was going to have to separate them but that night I found them cuddling together and I couldn’t do it they never fought again for the remaining 3 years of they life
