How a Marshall + Les Paul should sound? Dimed PLEXI + 1970 Goldtop!
In my book, this a proper LP tone. Organic, percussive, explosive, metallic, dynamic, fat and mf'ing badass. Ingredients: cranked Plexi, Greenback cab, Les Paul, Dynamic mic, rehearsal room. No pedal and attenuator BS. Pure bliss!

6402’s sound great!
Very close!!
Did you jump the channels? It sounds like only the bright channel is playing. You said greenback speakers, but is it a closed back cab? Like a 4x12. Both sound a bit bright for what my memory thinks a plexi tone should be.
Is the Plexi Lead or Bass spec ??
Omg that tone and that guitar
now this is real tone
Great sound. What speakers are you using?
Fantastic
I reckon you’ve found a worthy replacement for your 69 JMP. Sounds great. I like the SG a little more for the bluesy stuff.
Well, for now. The little Studio Plexi is good for recording and close in feel but in the room face-to-face the big guy would eat it, as one would expect. Thx!
Ouch. The SV20 is just too bright and brittle. Amazing what one capacitor value change and one added capacitor do to the tone!
In itself it's not bad and the feel under the fingers, the plexiesque dynamics and percussivity are there. Of course the big guy eats it alive in a face-to-face contest.
La Gibson ha un suono più chiaro e leggermente più caldo,ma si tratta di sfumature minime...
That is bloody interesting. The JMP50 sounds fuller on the rythm parts. Lead then there is a difference but not particularly discernable.
Yes, the difference is mainly in the low-end thump.
I was sold on the 61.. Then I went to the store and tried a 2023 standard against the 61...The 2023 Standard sounded fatter and with better mid range than the 61... I left the store with the 2023 standard...
Sounds like my Edwards Les Paul 👍
Sounds great!
Thx!
Nice work!
Thx!
That's a great combination there just a boost pedal and your there .
I think the vol was overall between 5-7 on the amp so there was still room for more gain but I like to retain a little breath of clarity.
The amp is doing most of the heavy lifting here.
I am so dissapointed that you didn't made an extended long video including a long introduction about who you are, inviting us to subscribe and like the video and where you talked about the speakers. The video is too direct and it only let us hear how the speakers sound like. The video is too ordinary and doesnt match up with the influencers criteria that wants us to waste hours of time watching useless videos profitable for the creator's money pockets. It's a shame and we should all ban your channel! 🤣
HAHA! Someone's got to invent a YT bullsh*t blocker for gear videos. We already spend third of our life sleeping, now the other third gets wasted for those 10-min wikipedia podcasts before every 30 sec of actual playing.
Excellent shirt combination
Yeah thanks for this. I had a pair in a silver face twin that I use with my Fender Rhodes. Took my speaker jack cable and plugged into both a custom 100 hiwatt and the plexi. Extremely surprised with the results. I think it’s a keeper.
2016 HW sounds phenomenal👍
Thanks for this comparison! I have a couple of Orange cabs, which are loaded with Vintage 30’s from the factory. Orange amps tend to get a little fizzy with the gain up and I really didn’t want to go with a equalizer pedal as I’m a signal chain minimalist and prefer to run my guitar directly into an amp without adding any background noise at all. I live only 12 miles from the Eminence plant and have been looking real hard at the Cannabis Rex to add clarity and also tame the ultra high fizzyness a little. Your test confirmed what I suspected and I’ll be looking to add a couple of C-Rex speakers soon. Thanks again for taking the time to help us out! 🤘
I have a cab with one of each in it. It sounds GREAT. Blues, rock, cleans. The whole sonic spectrum.
Not a gay comparison !
i have a question. i have a standard 61 and the string spacing seems really wide compared to my 2004 les paul. But that Les Paul has a nashville bridge. Is the string spacing on the 2002 and 2020 standards any tighter than the 61 abr1 bridge?
The later cone sounds good. I bet with some mic placement tweaks you could get them sounding closer
Vintage G12T-75? The newer version is harsher.
Thank you for this comparison! Recently I've got a 97' 1960ax with 6402 cone as well. Could you tell which mic did you use and position?
Congrats! Just a very cheap shure dynamic mic (not even SM-57), I'll have to check it's name. I mic the upper right speaker between the center and the edge of cone.
Once again, the reissues just don’t get there.
Some have the .68uf V2 cathode cap, and some don't. I wonder why that is? I was just looking at a '68 that had the cap. I built my clone with it, and It's a bit gainer in the mids.
Great video. I’m only now realizing how much the various speakers change the tone. Amazing. 👍
Hey! Any of those Guitars on your site up for sale? Cheers, Marshall
I've got an Edwards copy, with Gibson P90's and some vintage Vitamin Q's. It's probably my favorite guitar. Neck is definitely slimmer than the Gibson, but I adore it. I like your videos! Thanks for sharing!
Thx man! Enjoy, MIJ guitars are ace!
Both sound great. I find that the G12-65 tames a bit of the raspiness in the high end on a JCM 800, which is helpful. I don't like Greenbacks as much with an 800. The combination of Plexi + Greenback, however, is a sound that is imprinted in our musical brains. They go together so well.
Do I collect correctly, that the G12-65 is in the 1x12 Cabinet and G12M is in a 4x12?
Yes. It certainly has an effect but I intentionally made this test on low volume so that we can hear more of the speaker-tone instead of the cab. I should redo this one though for more accuracy.
for me all pretty similar except 1992 SL which is the warmer
Yeah, the '92 certainly had a warmer sound in the room as well.
To me the old standard has overly hot and therefore muddy pickups. The 2020 SG 61 is great. But the custom shop blows them all out of the water.
Incredible!
❤
uuh nice!
Nice. Is that an EV microphone?
Just a budget Shure C607 dynamic mic placed at the edge of the cone - right behind me at the top left Greenback and covered by me while the 2x12 C.Rex cab is being rec'd.
Red is a little scooped to my ears. I prefer the black tolex.
Sounds fantastic! My 1969 JMP 50 is model number 3037A. Inspection stamp is October 6 1969
Sweet! These are incredible amps.
I knew that they were different, but not that different!
Well, as much as I tried to make this test fair and equal by recording them on low vol, the Greenback is in a 412 and the 65 is in a 112 cab. I should redo this test better.
Sounds very close to me. Just the red one sounds more present. Could be the tubes. Would have been interesting to hear the two heads using the same tubes, but that would have been a pain.
If you enjoy playing metal or breakdown, you will like 2002 standard with higher power, thick and heavy, and better bass. If you like vintage rock, you will like 64 or 61 low-power, small and sharp. It depends on what music you play, what sound you need, and there is no real sense of good or bad.
More or less correct altough there are common preferable attributes like a balanced natural EQ curve, a responsive and percussive low-end & acceptable sustain and so on. The material gotta be good to begin with, then comes the pickup and hardware adjustments + the other tiny pieces of the puzzle.
@@Guitar_Magic I feel conflicted and have no choice. I like to play heavy rock like post hardcore or lighter post rock. I hope the guitar can have a thick and full, aggressive sound and a sweet clean sound. So I should prefer a high-power SG STD guitar with a pickup, but I would prefer a guitar like the 1964 SG that clearly has better wood and sound details, even if it may not be suitable for the music I want to play.
Also ensure that the height of the pickup is exactly the same as the relative height of the two pickups. Because their influence is really too great, I often adjust them to get completely different sounds.
Spot-on!
I liked red one more.
