TI-89 Titanium Repair - Won't Turn On, Even with fresh batteries
มุมมอง 5K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Repair of a TI-89 that wouldn't turn on even after installing fresh batteries. To open the calculator, a very small torx (penta, star, 5-point) screw driver bit is needed to remove the six screws around the rear perimeter. Then, a flat head screw driver (or preferably a plastic wedge, stiff guitar pick, etc.) is used to pry open the case. Easiest to start near at the bottom.

    I cannot believe it actually worked!! I've had this calculator for a long time now, and it just stopped working like a week ago, out of a hurry I had to buy a newer model and it's battery didn't work well. Turns out Texas instruments don't have a warranty for batteries, so I guess they have a history with battery issues. Anyway, I opened my ti89 and as soon as I cleaned the contacts it came back to life. Thank you very much.

    This is a temporary fix tho... the solder is much softer than the copper trace that wore out. A better fix would have been to solder wires joining the board to the battery contacts which would be a permeant repair.

    Hi Carlos, thanks for making this video. I'm currently about halfway through replicating this repair, using an off the shelf L298N motor drive controller board. Just to verify the points you show on the board, F(orward)In, R(everse)in, and Out1 & 2 are straightforward. For the other three points, I'm guessing LGND is ground, VCC is 5V and the one in the center that's only partially visible is the 12V supply? Thanks again.

    • @CarlosR_
      @CarlosR_ 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @MarkGiannullo, I believe that is correct. I don't remember exactly and the unit didn't belong to me so I don't have it here to open and double check. But two ways you could check are: 1. If you're comfortable connecting all of the boards out side of the chassis and powering the unit on, you could then take a measurement of that point with a multimeter and verify the presence of +12V. 2. Using the schematics and pcb diagrams, you could start at the +12V rail and follow the lines until you get to the area around this chip and then find a convenient place to solder your line to. I regret not taking a picture of the wires after they were soldered to the PCB because that would have made this clear. Good luck with the rest of the repair, and I hope it works! Please report back or maybe even put up a video of the result, I'd love to see it. Take care, Carlos.

    I have Panasonic EZ485V. Bought it new over a decade ago and stopped using it a few years into having it due to the disc drive tray wanting to close itself almost immediately 90% of the time I opened it which made putting discs in a pain. Decided to use it again recently having forgotten about that issue and immediately remembered why I hated the device so much. No clue why it ever started doing it because it wasn't used all that much, probably started doing it after about 2 years of owning it.

    Carlos - just found your channel and this video. I have a DMV-EZ475V ( great unit for past 14 years) and the service manual is wonderful. After reset (holding power switch for 10 seconds), I get an F07 error code, but cannot find it in the service manual. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Kevin

    • @CarlosR_
      @CarlosR_ ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kevin, I also cannot find any mention of F07 in the manual. Can you verify there is no VHS or DVD stuck in the machine and the VHS loading mechanism is in the full up position (pgs. 12 and 14 for descriptions of how)?

    • @stollfamily3914
      @stollfamily3914 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CarlosR_ Thank you for the fast reply - much appreciated. I confirmed that no VHS tape is stuck, the carriage is in the full up position, and no DVD is stuck. I reset the machine again this morning using both methods - hit reset button located behind DVD controls door and press & hold power button for 10 seconds. Now error code F60 comes up. Ouch. Probably a well documented electrolytic capacitor failure. Any other ideas?

    • @stollfamily3914
      @stollfamily3914 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CarlosR_ I opened up the box and DUST! Vacuumed it all out. I visually inspected the electrolytic caps and found no bulging or leakers. I also used isopropyl alcohol to clean the surface mount control board in case there were any "dust bridges" across and of the chip pads. Still getting the "F60 error code and from the service manual p17 - DVD module has not started; defect of digital PCB. I do not want to mess with repairing a surface mount PCB. Any ideas on where to get a replacement board?

    • @CarlosR_
      @CarlosR_ ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stollfamily3914 Alright, that was a smart thing to do. Capacitors can still fail/fall out of spec without "telling us" by bulging, busting, or leaking. Unfortunately it requires removing them from the circuit and testing them individually so we can't rule them out by visual inspection. It is sounding like either a issue with the powersupply to the DVD board or in fact an issue with the DVD board as F60 is telling us. But the diagnosis would require a multimeter at a minimum or ideally an oscilloscope to check the power supply rails. One other thing to try is to unplug and replug all the cables inside the box in case there is a bad/loose/slightly corroded connection to any of the boards. Of course make sure to have the unit unplugged from the wall before doing this! As for finding a replacement, eBay would probably be the best place to find the board/old unit with hopefully a different problem you could harvest the board from. One thing to keep in mind is, assuming the new DVD board is 100% functional, the problem may still exist if the problem lies in the power supply or elsewhere. In essence, this could be an additional trouble shooting step; just to forewarn you. I appreciate your willingness and determination to fix this unit! I wish more people would take the time and effort to service/repair their equipment.

    The car inspection in Maryland is incredibly strict that sucks, here in Texas the inspection is pretty basic, if the vehicle is 25 years or older you only need a basic safety inspection: headlights, tail lights, brake lights and blinkers, seatbelt, wipers. That’s pretty much it. If it’s 24 years or newer you pretty much only have to pass the safety inspection and emissions which isn’t hard to pass either, vehicle will pass as long as it doesn’t have an emissions related code like p420

      Hi Nayan, Remove the top cover and rotate the Load/Unload motor (the silver DC motor on the right side of the VHS system) with your fingers so the VHS carriage is in the up position. It may be a little challenging since the motor is tucked between the circuit boards, but be patient and go slow, watching how the mechanism moves. When it's in the full up position (the metal carriage is up against the door you normally push the VHS tape in), plug in the unit and see if the F06 error has been cleared. F06 indicates the carriage that moves the VHS from the input slot down to the motor/read system is stuck in the middle of it's motion. By moving the carriage to the up position manually should allow the power-on self check to successfully complete. Let me know if you have any questions about those steps and I can try to describe the process further, otherwise please report the results of that test as they will determine the next steps. Cheers, from Maryland, USA!
