Definitely disagree with calling feminist approaches to classics and other media a "gimmick" - what I disagree with is when "feminist retelling" becomes a catch-all phrase for "here's a woman as a main character, here she is crying over being a victim" when the original had her NOT be a victim (at least all the time) with her own agency. It is not appropriating "great historical works" as you call it when someone retells an old tale and adds a spin to it. I am simply tired of these retellings not doing ENOUGH.

(Also I wanna read that thesis pls and thank you 🫶) Things like that become their own repeating narrative, too, because a good amount of authors don't do their own research but instead rely on OTHER AUTHORS and THEIR narratives, at which point it's impossible to unlearn this type of narrative that paints women exclusively as victims without any attempt at nuance

I'm generally against the concept of reviewers providing criticism for authors because reviewer and author spaces shouldn't overlap that much in my opinion. As we said towards the beginning of this live stream: this is partially catharsis, partially the need to have some videos out there providing criticism for other readers because it's very hard if not impossible to find any content on BS that engages critically (and in this case also actually negatively) with his works. I don't consider it a waste of time and neither do my two cohorts. We do get personal enjoyment out of being smart enough to spot BS's glaring worldbuilding issues, though, thanks for noticing ♥

I didn't have four hours to spare so I skimmed some, but got most of it. 😅 Some aspects of the treatment of racial/class/slavery issues are definitely my biggest grip with the series and you had some good observations!
