Shopping at Amish stores for our large family
มุมมอง 3.5K28 วันที่ผ่านมา
I'm taking our monthly trip to Lancaster County PA to restock my food supplies. Along with our stop at Costco, I also make sure to always stop in several of the local Amish stores and farms to load up on the foods we love. Though I try very hard to keep processed foods at a minimum, I am finding myself needing to take some short cuts this season.

      Funny, I had a local librarian, who’s known me for a few years and knows we have lots of kids, mention last winter that I was glowing and asked if I was pregnant. I laughed and told her no, most definitely not… then I showed up 8 months later with a massive belly and told her she obviously knew what she was seeing even before I did 🤣🤣 Well, I did track steps for a bit and most normal days I was averaging about 7-9k. On days I’m moving fencing it was well over 12k. I just have to be careful because I am a foodie and can easily put away any calories I burned off 😂

    Hi Leigh, I enjoyed coming along with you and your family on your farm. The piglets are so cute, I love their squeelz and I am sure Gloria the momma pig enjoyed her belly rub. I know sometimes when I visit a farm and you see the animals it is such a blessing to have farmers, especially ones that are clean and care about their animals but there is a lot of work that goes into the upkeep of a farm and the cost can be expensive as well. I can appreciate the hard work you and your family does to care and provide for your family and your community. Local farmers are a blessing from the LORD. You have a beautiful pregnancy glow. Hi Leigh! That is a lot of shopping in one day, but a great haul. 😊 I don’t think having a few snacks and fun foods are a problem in moderation. What I am hearing is maybe 2-3 meals a week, which isn’t much percentage-wise. I love snack foods, but they don’t serve my body, so I agree that whole foods are best. And you will get back to cooking like you have been, but just not right now. I think you are wise to conserve your energy. A healthy baby and delivery is the priority right now. 👍👍 I hope you find the missing box of beef! That would wear on me, no knowing where it is. 🤔 Take care and have a blessed week too. Do you do a dip before you milk? I’m on day 2 of milking my first time milk cow. I’ve been washing and drying her udder and teets, milking out and then wiping udder and teets with coconut oil. But the more I learn about mastitis the more scared I’m getting 😳

    • @GridIronHillFarm
      @GridIronHillFarm หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t do a pre dip. I just wash and then strip the milk from each quarter. You don’t have to be fearful of mastitis. The somatic cell count in a cow is always fluctuating. One way to help that is to support their immune system with good quality supplements. As long as you continue to keep the area clean and your cow is in good health you are doing all you can. Just strip the milk into a strip cup to pick up on any chunks, which indicates mastitis, and if she does show sign, milk her multiple times a day for a few days until it looks resolved. I use some essential oils on her quarter to help with keeping mastitis down if I see signs.

    Hi Leigh! Thanks for the video! It is good to see you doing well! 😊 I’m praying for you and your baby. 🙏 I don’t blame you about protecting yourself from the bees. It doesn't hurt to be prepared! Wow! That is a beautiful pasture you are fencing. Your horses will be so happy! 😀 I guess Daisy’s extra large udder makes sense after the fact. So sorry for this loss, but I agree with your friends that: 1) you could not know ahead of time 2) you could not save the calf after it was born. It would have been extraordinary for the calf to survive a breach birth. 3) Daisy surviving was a huge blessing. I grew up on a beef cattle farm. When my dad began to transition from Herefords to Chianina, the Hereford cows had major trouble with the larger calves. A breached calf got stuck in a heifer, and my dad had to pull it out with the tractor. I still can’t believe that heifer survived. Others had c-sections. It’s amazing that Daisy didn’t need assistance to deliver the breached calf. Death is a part of farming. I hope you don’t get too much grief over showing this. Either way, I understand and empathize with your situation and the loss. Your family and you are doing great. 👍 Lastly, I have been thinking about your share regarding your foster children. I am so sorry that they could not stay with you. I’m glad you are able to still see them and stay in touch. You have so much love to give; they must miss you terribly. Thank you 🥰 I pinch myself every day. It’s far more than we deserve.

    The powers that be should have given you the money to bring your home up to their standards instead of taking those poor little kids out of a stable home and thrown back in the system 😢

      You have no idea how much I agree with this. My husband and I poured money into doing all that we could to make it right. I told DSS what they were asking was far more than we could afford. They simply thanked us for our 12 years of fostering a dozen children and closed our home. I mourned for a long time over this. The poor children bounced around half a dozen more times but are now finally settled. I’m still thankful we keep in touch.

    Your opening description, I relate to completely. I'm a mom of 8 and had morning sickness for every one of them, I always said to myself" what was I thinking doing this again?" I loved and wanted each one. ❤

      Hahaha agreed!!! “I don’t remember it being THIS BAD!” 🤣 Of course now that I’m in my second trimester I’m feeling SO good and have forgot all about the morning sickness again 🤣

    We had to go to raised beds in our garden, as we have had an influx of armadillos. We have had to deal with them for about 12 years now. We never had them before here in Southwest Missouri. We always planted in the ground. I was not sure about the raised beds, but I have learned to love them. We can control weeds so much better now. Things like new garden disturbing insects and the armadillo have come to us through our climate changing in our area. I plant tomatoes in June instead of the beginning of May. We also do not plant zucchini or yellow squash until July because we get vine borers now and usually by the first or second week of July the they have finished infesting the squash with their larvae. We still get squash bugs but we can pick them off and get rid of their eggs on leaves. Things in life are always changing . Change is the only constant in life, if that makes any sense to anyone but me. My kids are grown and gone from home. My grandchildren are also and my great grandchildren are growing like weeds. I am now 74 years old and at times I still can’t believe it. I have realized that I am more content and peaceful feeling as I have gotten older and much more accepting of changes now, because I used to look at change as a new hurdle I had to get past and now I don’t. I look at each new change with acceptance now. Sorry I started talking about gardening and ended up being philosophical. I guess that comes with being older, too. Have a great day.❤❤❤

      Wow, that’s really interesting seeing all the changes you have noted. Do you keep a garden journal for things like that? I need to do better. I always think I’ll remember what I need to know 🤣 I’ve been very fascinated with using timing to prevent pests. It’s great to hear you have found it successful. Ooo that’s a wonderful perspective on change!! I’ll have to remember that. Thanks for sharing ❤️❤️❤️

      @@GridIronHillFarm I don’t keep a journal for gardening but I have one for paying bills to keep an eye on expenses as things go up. Sometimes I have to adjust where the little extra money we have each month goes. Sometimes we have to tighten the belt a little. I also will write things in the same book about the garden and other things I want to think about later and have no time for at that moment. This way I can go back to the last month and read my thoughts on what I need to get done now. I just looked back at last fall book and remembered that I had decided to cook my tomatoes down into tomato purée and tomato paste this year in my crockpots to save space in my freezer. It also gives my sauces a richer tomato flavor when I make spaghetti, chili or any other tomato based dish. I have been keeping a watch on our changing climate here in Missouri for years. It has become one of my hobbies, I guess. I love your channel . Your farm and how you have it decorated. I began the declutter about four years ago. Sometimes it is hard to give up things you have collected or something that has memories to cherish. My suggestion is to take pics of them and put in an album to look at and remember the person who gave you that item . That has helped me go down memory lane, which is a place I love to go to. Hoping your last trimester goes well. I can’t wait to see the sweet baby when it arrives.🩷🩷🩷

    This is my first time watching your video and I am so peeved at your husband. You moving that grain while pregnant. To stay fit as you said. I don’t mean to offend you but some things he should be doing. That is one! Love your videos. Subscribed today.

      Aw you are sweet. I’m not offended, I appreciate you looking out for me. As you get to know me you’ll see I’m a pretty stubborn woman 😏 I don’t need no man carrying grain for me. I’m a workhorse. 🤣BUT!!! If my car breaks down on the side of the road I KNOW my husband would come running to my rescue. For years my midwife has been hollering at me to take it easy…I will when I know I cannot do it safely anymore. I lift weights at the gym multiple times a week so I know my body can handle a good bit. And as far as my husband… I probably do not portray him in good light because I don’t show him much, but that man lives, breathes, and would die for me. There is absolutely nothing he wouldn’t do for me if I asked. He works very long hard days off the farm so I try to support him by doing as much as I can. Plus, the animals are kinda my thing 😁 He is there with me when I have big tasks to do but I’m very capable of doing most alone. I enjoy it ❤️ I hope you enjoy the videos to come 🥰 and thanks again for your concern.
