I understand what you are saying (@ darldilly) but this sounds like a "copy" of the original of 'So Deep is the Night' by Ken Dodd. In the original, his voice and diction are superb and there is only one other singer (that I have heard) who sings this number equally as well as Ken Dodd, and his name is Joe Longthorne MBE. Both are equally as good as the other, in different ways. The recording we have just heard on this site appears to lack clarity, as if there were a veil between the singer and the listener. Nevertheless, this does not take away anything from the magnificent voices of both Ken Dodd and Joe Longthorne. God bless them both for bringing such joy into our lives!

I had this record and a cowboy outfit. I knew all the lyrics, except that I thought he sang " I made a violin in state prison. -- couldn't understand why the grown ups laughed !

It reminds me a lot of Dean Martin's vibrato.

This is a very good version. I know this song because of 2003's Carnivale on HBO. I'm trying to work it out now. I remember playing it on the piano years back and think it was in B Flat. The Carnivale version seems to be in D major. Messing with it just now, all I could hear was 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head' from 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'. I wonder if this is where they got the idea for that melody. Cheers!
