Fantastic morning fly-fishing for searun cutthroat trout on the Alsea River. I've been chasing these fish for over twenty years, and these particular ones were unusually strong, hard fighters. At the end of the video, there's a short clip from the following day, swinging for summer-run steelhead on the Rogue River in southern OR. I hooked into a nice steelhead, but ultimately lost it.

    • @catlauncher
      @catlauncher 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@frankheimerdinger7407 Great question. With the lack of rain, they've been unusually hard to find lately, so my thinking is they're either already up in the tribs, or more likely, hanging back down in tidewater. All that said, I'm betting after the squirt of rain coming in the next week or so, the fish will move up & around. Would love to hear other's thoughts too though!

    One thing I've learned fishing on the jetty down here in Coos Bay, is always have a plan when you get a fish. Like have a good plan to get down next to the water to get it. So many videos I see people get hooked, then can't get down to the water safely

    • @thisisntgood71

    • @catlauncher
      @catlauncher 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep. When they're fresh from the salt, they tend to be pretty bright. Then, once they're in the freshwater for a while, they color up real nice, and their spots and throats become much more pronounced.

      @@catlauncher Thanks. I will check it out. I scouted the Upper N this weekend, no luck. Someone mentioned it gets an early run. Do you mind sharing the best times to go? Its a long drive for me to get the the coast, lol.

    • @catlauncher
      @catlauncher 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "Best time to go"... great question. I mainly fish the Alsea and Siletz, and they usually start showing up in July and then it usually gets better as the weeks progress and things cool off, with Sept-Oct being prime. Not sure about other coastal streams, but I'd imagine they're all fairly similar.

    • @inventoryking
      @inventoryking 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@catlauncher Thank you! I did drive up 229 to see if spots on the siletz this past weekend, but since its a new river for me I had no clue where to start and the windy road didnt help. lol. How far from tidewater in sep-oct? I did see some of the parks along the road, but again, not sure.

    • @catlauncher
      @catlauncher 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Siletz and Alsea are very different for SRCs. Lower Siletz is mainly private property, so I fish the tidewater section from my pontoon boat. Alsea has a lot of public access throughout its length, so that's mainly walk & wade fishing above tidewater. For both rivers, broadly speaking, I stick to the lower 20 miles or so. Like I say though, pretty much all coastal streams in OR have an SRC run in them, so I'd explore the ones closest and learn where the fish hang out. It's fun to try and figure out!

    • @catlauncher

    Does your chasing of sea run cutts depend on the time of year?

    • @catlauncher
      @catlauncher ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. The short answer is "yes". But, it seems to have changed over the years. Used to be only a late Aug-early Oct fishery. Then for several years the runs seems to come a lot earlier e.g. early July. The past couple of years though they seem to run late, and I haven't really had good success until well into Sept. In short, SRCs are fickle, and will show up in coastal rivers sometime between July and Sept, depending on their mood, and whatever other conditions I still can't figure out. I'll keep chasing them though.

Then a hot orange hackle behind the legs. Body is shrimp flat braid coated with UV resin. Tail is hot orange hackle fibers. I tie it backwards i.e. after tying in the tail first, I then work backwards from the front and whip-finish right at the tail. Hope that helps!
