They all three still work there. The agency must be doing something right.

@ 28:30 of the video, it is stated that you shouldn't use a comp in your query that is too large of a comp, like the Bible! I am not sure what comp I might use in my new book, since my book is a translation of the New Testament of the Bible! Seriously, I do understand what you are saying and it makes complete sense. Make an honest comparison that is done in humility.

Very good discussion. The video would REALLY benefit from having closed caption.

The more telling insight here. You only get paid once you complete the manuscript but it’s important not to submit a complete manuscript as the agents may want to go in a different direction. Huh? So that could indicate lots of your own money to invest in from your part before you embark on writing a non-fiction book.

It's good to get the word from the horses mouth! Getting a deal with Andrew Stuart would be very hard because of competition.

I just finished reading this book and it was very interesting. I thought Lana was too hard on her partner much like a pitt bull. I also had no sympathy for Penka as her stupidity created the psychological torture and disfunction of Katya. Penka caused her sons death and she should have let Katya know that instead of blaming her. Penka is the real villian in this book in my opinion. I need to stop. I want to keep writing how much I despise Penka. Yet in the end of the book she is betrayed as a suffering, sad concerned mother. That doesn't coincide with the selfish cold hearted person she was earlier in her life. I don't believe people change that much.

This video is very discouraging to new authors. "Tell us about all the times you've been published." IF I HAD BEEN PUBLISHED I WOULD NOT BE QUERYING YOU.

I dont know why they do this. To help writers? It is like if they need the publicity and just that. Considering they could not get 2000 likes, not even that, it is waste of time and my time

Thank you for posting this. I have manuscript completed first one (working on 2nd one) but watching various videos and reading up on what literary agents go for and the publishing field. I will be sending out submissions soon and see what happens. I enjoyed this very much and Andrew Stuart helped and confirmed what I needed to do. Thanks again.

when they make the distinction between character-driven, and theme-driven, they don't seem to really... make a distinction between the two. can anyone elaborate on this? i've heard of PLOT-driven vs. character-driven, but theme-driven VERSUS character-driven? aren't those usually thought of as being in tandem?

someone may be a great writer without ever having published before just like an undiscovered singer in his fifties its happened before so I believe Erin in incorrect because her thinking is limited amd this is whats wrong with people who act like crabs in a bucket.

Daygame Don Very good point. I found myself feeling discouraged after looming at this interview. It has a condescending air to it. Nevertheless all great artists must make their own way instead of hoping for others to unlock the door we must create our own.

This is the first time I have seen Folio and JK (who I met in person once, thanks to the Indianapolis Writer's Center) in a long time. It is nice to hear from them. I am acutely aware that agents are 'commission sales geniuses/wizards' for books. I am still seeking great representation as I am still better at writing than at commission only sales. Wow. Respect.
