Monday 21st September 1914: “Scenes of enthusiasm were witnessed at Tandragee when between 60 and 70 men of the Tandragee, Scarva, and Laurelvale, companies of the County Armagh Regiment, U.V.F, left by the 11.27 o’clock train for Belfast, en route for the encampment at Clandeboye. The Tandragee Mill was closed for the day to enable the workers to escort the men to the railway station, and crowds of people flocked into the town from the surrounding district. The Volunteers assembled at their drill hall, and were escorted through the town to the station by an armed guard, with fixed bayonets, of the entire Tandragee company, headed by the local “Catch-my-Pal” Flute Band. Gifts of pocket Bibles, blankets, cigarettes, pipes, and tobacco, were presented to the men, through the kindness of local gentlemen. The train left to the accompaniment of hearty cheers from those assembled on the platform and the explosion of fog signals placed along the line. The men’s situations will be kept open for them until their return, and their dependents will be looked after during their absence.”
