I coxed the GBR pair that won the bronze medal. We were the first British senior men's coxed pair to ever get into a World Champs final, let alone to medal in it. Three years later, I coxed the GBR M4+ that won Olympic gold in LA84, with the stroke of this pair (Richard Budgett) in the 2 seat.

Andy Holmes is somewhat forgotten, he was one of the British rowing greats, not many oarsmen could could have matched Steve Redgraves prowess and kept a pair going in a straight line, that was some display of power and endurance.

Sia detto per inciso: nel 1982 avevo 12 anni, ero allievo B e remavo da qualche mese; un giorno arrivando in società ho sentito un socio salutare Daniele Boschin con "ciao campione del mondo!" ma pensavo che scherzasse, invece era pochi giorni dopo Lucerna. A volte la storia ci sfiora ;^)

In 1977 I did my first race in single scull in the 13-14 years old category in Switzerland. I was really impressed and still remember the name of the winner (G...i from Locarno) who raced in 1:47 and a few months later in 1:43. It was on Stampfli wooden boats with wooden oars... At 14, he had already his adult size, contrary to most of its competitors. Sadly, similarly to a great number of similar cases, he didn't make it to the older categories...

The finish should be featured on one of his videos, search for "Canottaggio: momenti di gloria" or so. I'll ask him, and if it's there I'll add it as soon as I have some spare time. Ciao - do you have the full coverage of the sprints? Would you also have the Coxed Pair race coverage? I was in that final as a timoniere... not very long in the picture but we were unlucky and had a technical problem on the 3rd stroke... and as it was a sprint there was no restart... grazie!

Sure: and who in the meantime has been Olympic bronze in 2-, gold and silver in the 2x and World champion in the single! Long live Iztok Cop: an immense athlete.

So 21 years later, the same IZTOK ČOP who participated at this rowing championship and came at this championship SECOND, today at the 30 olympic games came THIRD whit Luka Špik!! This is a very awsome person who will be remembered for generation as a GREAT rower and person!

that's a funky thing you got going on with your knees.

@adorable70 well, he used a yellow boat later, but although equally fast for me he never was as mean as on his Veb, with the transversal stripes on his chest. Yes he was the greatest of all, and stepping on a Veb back then used to give me a special feeling because of him. I just thought "heck, it's Thomas Lange's boat".

@ rowervhs Good to know, thx. I don't have any hope for coxless pairs 1987 as the race wasn't broadcast in Italy that year. 2+ might be somewhere, but I don't have it ready.

@rowermc Thx for the comment! True... this year I'm working on better supporting my pull with the trunk/abdominals. Easier in the 1x though: the erg's handle, forcing my wrists straight and hence my elbows down, adds some further bad posture to the picture :^)

@rowermc Thx :^) This is not my 1x anyway. It is set up for a friend who is 193x90, so very high for me, and looks even higher given the unfortunate (and involuntary) resizing to 4:3 of the video... It is also rigged much harder than mine because we use the same oars on the 4x

I didn't know you were rowing so high. You are definitely not at 12cm. You seem to be closer to 18. I won't blame you for that though. You look a bit like...Synek! ;-)

Interesting. It shows how well you control your catch...and how week your core stability is at the end of the stroke. You simply let go at the end of the stroke with no support from the abdominals, the lower back muscle and the quads.That's why your legs are bouncing at the end of the stroke. You tend to do the same in some other footage in 1X. Be careful, this is a common cause of low back pain! Nothing dramatic though, simply work harder on your core muscles! ;-)

Ok, the French win in 2000 was a better race but this is quite simply the best rowing performance in an Olympic Final that I've ever seen. If they'd doubled up I'm convinced they would have beaten the Abbagnale's too
