The music of life: Rhythm, harmony, melody
The thought I have for you today is this application of the idea of music.
Music is such a powerful basic thing that seems to connect in such a basic way with us and with the world, and there's something very fundamental about it.
And I think that it can be useful to kind of use that metaphor and that frame of thinking and applying to our lives.
So I look at ways of looking at the elements of music.
You see rhythm, harmony, melody.
And of course thythm: we can see that in time.
And music, of course, itself is something that exists in the dimension of time, just like our lives are in this dimension of time.
And the rhythm is how everything fits in time.
The pacing, the speed, the elements that repeat, and the sections that change.
All of these things are part of the rhythm.
Following the most basic rhythm of the heartbeat, the breath, up to the day, most basic rhythm of waking and sleeping.
And then we go around the year, rhythm of the year, and ultimately can look at entire life as being like one kind of circuit or circle or one particular unit of rhythm somehow.
And so I really like getting to feel that thythm, getting to feel all the different cycles within cycles.
Heartbeat, breath, one session of effort, one day, season, lifetime, so on.
And really feel all those different cycles within cycles.
And we can kind of feel where we are with each of them, and like really make use of those cycles and that timing to the best that we can.
I mean, timing is such a fundamental thing for good action and a good life.
It's almost like it's like magic.
You could do the most perfect thing at the wrong time, and it would be disaster.
But you can do even very simple, small things, but if you do them at just the right time, it's like magic.
So the rhythm and timing is just such a good thing to plug into.
And then I think about harmony.
So the idea of harmony, that we're not alone.
Like it's more like life is maybe more like a symphony than it is just like a solo a cappella song.
It's like we're always...
we're surrounded by other music, and there's the music in everything around us, from other people, and in nature, and everything going on.
And so there's this idea of tuning, that we can't just be living entirely doing whatever we want.
Of course, in a way, we can.
Like we do have the freedom to make any note we want.
So it's not to say we're not "allowed" to make any note we want.
Just like, you know, someone in the orchestra, like OK, they're not allowed to have a different tuning than everybody else.
Well, OK, you can say we have the freedom to have any note we want, but it's just good to have tuning that lines up. [...]
Like there's certain things we can do that it feels like dissonance.
The the metaphor of being dissonant.
Like we can do something that just like sounds...
it gives people the same feeling that like one of those screech notes gives, or that somebody's out of tune, out of key.
We can do actions that have that effect.
Or we can do actions that just like fit in.
If we hit the tuning right, if we hit the right harmony, then it's like this resonance effect, where what we do becomes magnified, and it becomes more powerful, because it just hits the right resonance where it combines with others.
And so through this idea of harmony, we can make our actions part of this sort of bigger picture, this sort of symphony of the universe, and make everything better.
And then melody: that's where I think there's the most freedom.
So melody operates within...
it fits with the rhythm.
It fits with the harmony.
It operates within that.
And yet with the melody, there's now this chance to be more playful, free, experimental.
The melody can do so many different things.
And the melody can be very instinctive, can be kind of just doing what feels naturally, letting the melody flow.
And we can also be creative with melody and do things that are different.
And we can choose to keep things minimal, or we can add more notes and ornaments, and kind of shape the melody exactly as we wish.
So this is where I think it's almost like the most fun.
It's like the icing on the cake.
It's the most fun part, where we're feeling the rhythm, we're tuned in harmony, and then we can give our unique melody.
It's like the most individual aspect of it, where we can really express ourselves and live the life that we want to live, in our own way, in our own style.
Like it's where we can really give an expression of style and taste and what we like.
So these three combined, rhythm, harmony, melody: I think this is a fun metaphor to apply to life.
So I'd be curious to hear: how do you apply this? Or I'm sure there's many other ways that this idea of music, the music of life, that this can be applied.
So I'd be curious to hear how you do it.
And I hope you enjoy it.

The spirit of exploration
มุมมอง 222ปีที่แล้ว
When I think about what brings meaning to my life, what makes life meaningful, often for me it comes back to this idea of exploration. Because the basic fact as I see it is just that life is a mystery. Everything around us, the whole universe, the fact that anything exists at all, is just such a fundamental mystery. And for some reason, I have curiosity about it, just a desire to know what's go...
Everybody is creative: We are filters for our experience
มุมมอง 165ปีที่แล้ว
One metaphor that I like for life is this model of a filter. In some way we seem to act as filters for what's around us. Like we have the environment that we are in, and we take things in. We experience the environment around us. And you could look at that as the input. It's coming in through our senses, everything that we see and hear and touch and experience, that's coming into us. And then t...
Don't forget to live

In the world of self-development and all this talk about living a better life and improvement, all these kinds of things, there's very naturally a focus on work, because we actually have to change things. Life doesn't just automatically get better. We need to work in order to change the conditions that we're in. Either working around the things around us, so we can have shelter and food and all...
Minimalist knowledge: Life on a need-to-know basis
มุมมอง 510ปีที่แล้ว
One of the themes I keep coming back to is simplicity. Minimalism. Looked at minimalism of my physical possessions, the clutter that is around me, having clear, open space physically. And could also look at that in the clearness of time, having not too much clutter filling time, so that there's open space in time, not trying to consume too many experiences and just fill up time with everything....
Minimalist self-development: We don't really need to "develop"

It's now been three years since I started this channel, and one year of a video every day, one year of a video every week, one year of a video every month, and now going down to one video every quarter. So when I started this, I was motivated by this idea that I was not living my life correctly. I wasn't making use of the life that I had. Just sort of passively drifting through life, without re...
Move your worst piece

So I now find myself back in the old place, piles of stuff everywhere, as I move back in and try to improve the situation here, try to make this the best home, the best living environment, that I can. And there's so many different pieces, so many different things, and the to-do list has just exploded. And this is even a relatively simple thing.I mean, I'm just fixing up basic things, moving in....
A good state of mind is like fresh air
มุมมอง 2002 ปีที่แล้ว
A good state of mind is like fresh air, and a bad state of mind is like being stuck in a stuffy room. And I like this metaphor because we've all had that experience of being in a room where the air is very stuffy and still, closed windows, no circulation. And maybe we get used to it, and it becomes normal, but it's always just a little bit uncomfortable and just makes everything a bit worse, ma...
Hours and seasons bring us back to the moment

As I go on, I find that I have less and less to talk about, because things really become simpler. And looking for a meaningful life seems to be not so much about adding new things, finding something to add to basic life, but really more about removing distractions. So a lot of things that fill our minds and fill our thoughts, fill our time, fill up our energy, a lot of these things are simply n...
Home is a place shaped by love

It was while travelling around, doing a bit of a road trip around my home area, southern Ontario, got to near the furthest point away from my home, right down in the southwestern corner of Ontario, and I started to think about what really makes a home. What is it about home that makes it different from any other place? It could be really interchangeable in some way. It doesn't have to have any ...
Spacious time: How would your time look as a space?
มุมมอง 1552 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome to Quest for a Meaningful Life in the park, down here by the Toronto waterfront, and today I'm thinking about what it means to think about time as if it's space. If we think about the home that we live in, you can imagine a mental picture of what your house or apartment or whatever looks like. Maybe your town, your city. Your environment. You live in a certain environment of space. But ...
Permanent Daylight Saving Time: Disconnecting from the sun
มุมมอง 2092 ปีที่แล้ว
Permanent daylight savings time. [...] I find it very symbolic of the way that we interact with nature. [...] Someone had a clever idea that we could actually pretend that the time is different than what it is. We could actually just change the clocks, completely arbitrarily. The sun isn't changing. Still doing the same thing. But when it's actually 12 o'clock, we can pretend it's 1 o'clock. An...

When it comes to meaningful life, finding meaning in life, one of the themes that keeps coming back is this idea of connecting to something bigger, plugging into something that is bigger than ourselves and our everyday lives. Welcome to Quest for a Meaningful Life on the road here in Quebec City where I'll be spending the winter, trying out this whole work from anywhere experience. Original video: th-cam.com/video/YWnk3uR4SXk/w-d-xo.html One of my videos that got the most responses is about being in a mental hole. This feeling that there's nothing to look forward to in life, I'm just in a hole. And my point that I was trying to make was that there's always something outside the hole.
