I remember when this happened, because it was just a few blocks from my home. I was still in grade school and my mother would not let me go down to see it with the neighborhood kids. Years later I would ride Budd trains every weekday to school in Boston. Thank you for this comprehensive documentary.
Wow! Northshore resident all my life (Swampscott for 7 years), avid MBTA fan, and I never heard of this accident! Thank you for sharing
I’ve been interested in RDCs ever since I rode them on the Reading RR when I was younger. Fortunately for me there there are six of them on the Reading and Northern near here, four of which are currently operating. At least one of the six was originally built for the Boston and Maine RR, 6134. They also have 9166 an RDC-3 converted to a refreshment car.
These videos that seemed to normal and blasé' when they were recorded are gold now since this is all gone and even some of the people!
This man does an outstanding narration. He tells it like it is without getting over sensational about it. Where I loved in Ohio, my older brother witnessed a single RDC hit and killed his girlfriends Dad. The New York Central band in the day ran a single Bud RDC from Cleveland to Cincinnati, later, reducing the run from Cleveland to Columbus only. I used to watch the Bud single car train the locals called "The Beeliner" for years in my youth. When Amtrak came on in the early 1970's, the Beeliner came off without any fanfare.
Sad, I can remember seeing the Budliners when I went to my Aunts house in Reading. I grew up near Cleary Square in Hyde Park but wasn’t born till 1956, thanks for bringing this history to us.
Thank you for this. I never knew about this before and I have lived in the Boston area for all of my life. It is history that I am glad to see being remembered.
I enjoyed Mr. Symmes’ presenting of the Swampscott train wreck video I saw on this channel.
Holy 💩
TH-cam only has really nice houses getting demolished never any dumps
i rode those cars for years from gloucester to boston.the engines were loud and smelly.there was another accident years later in Chelsea ma when a train hit a fuel tanker.my father's best friends daughter was killed on that train.i don't know if they were budd cars or not.so sad
The equipment involved in Chelsea-Everett was indeed a Budd car. I was a passenger returning from an evening "in town" on this train. Hit a stalled fuel truck. Engineman and conductor both killed. Two brothers who were friends were passengers, one died. As fate would decide, I later went to work in train service on the New Haven Railroad, I became, in 1970, the youngest passenger conductor working that anyone could recall. The train left North Station at 12:01 am and was a single Budd car. Later I was to learn that rolochron brakes did indeed hamper braking efficiency. I used to 'pinch my cheeks' when I heard the rolochron equipment engage...I knew we were not stopping soon. I regret your young woman acquaintance perished. My expert testimony assisted in the suits brought against the railroad. There were other faults with Budd cars that I was able to highlight. And, yes, I did feel guilt for having survived.
Where is the defrost thermostat? I order mine but cant see it!
Not sure. The repairman we hired handled that.
The Swampscott Memorial is present at the station today. Its presence prompted me to find and watch this.
Thanks for watching. This TH-cam video is a very polished first draft that we updated a few weeks later to correct minor errors and to let views know the memorial was installed back to its rightful place at the depot.
Thanks mr.Symmes - and to all who made this fitting and well done documentation of the "Swampscott Wreck" 60 years ago.
Briscoe Junior High School in my time in Beverly.
Growing up on 61 park st my grandfather would repair the 1886 house electric sign. I knew Hotel Trafton was historic. Its gone now.
After viewing the video of the inner portion of the unit It was disgusting and the views from a new structure would be the same.
I grew up on 61 park st. Next to the white factory behind you guys.
My friends mom owned the historic house on Essex street. The first school house. The counters were made of the slate from the chalkboards.
I owned a restaurant-nightclub in Salem ma. Infuriating that Beverly ma has zero tourist attractions used to draw Salem visitors. We have Hale house. never had a destructive fire so almost everything can be used to make a Historic Beverly draw. schooner hannah, Cummings center, Holmes estate. farms estates....I wish I was involved.
The Congress street project was a great job to utilize a CONTAMINATED AREA
Why doesn’t the MBTA buy more of these
I'm not going to watch the demolition 😭
big deal Danvers has A TON of historic places, homes, etc. All with all kinds of restrictions. besides the Mackey Funeral Home director Daniel Mackey said he has been leasing back the home but in a short time he will be phasing his operation to a new funeral home on Route 114 in Middleton, a home which opened in October. let the OWNERS do what they want. get over your whiny selves.
Honestly, what are you talking about? That new location for the Mackey Funeral Home has been open since 2014. You just read the newspaper article but forget to look at the date? Historic homes are a cultural resource that many people and some government agencies have deemed important and worth preserving for many reasons which I am sure you could care less about which is why people like you should have no part in how their future is determined. Watch any episode of Chronicle on WCVB and you'd see why they are considered to be an important resource. I don't think a ton of houses in Danvers looked quite like The Mackey Funeral especially right in the center of down town. Maybe when zoning catches up with how many feel about preservation we won't see these kinds of demolitions but it should be noted that no one has a right to build whatever they want on their own property and even if they did abutters should have some say. For now, the church got the parking lot they wanted but given the trends with the Catholic Church and the aging of parishes, maybe someday St. Mary's will close its doors for good too.

Seagulls are scavengers because they behave like 👍 greedy pigs 🐷. In the month November 2002, when my mother was alive and saw the seagull, she said “Bless that gull”. In the same year, my mother 🧑 said to me when she was alive “Do not feed the seagulls, be cruel to be kind”. I like 👍 the seagulls. In the past, I have let them in my flat. Seagulls are bullies, aggressive and lose their patience. Serves the seagulls right. Seagulls attack black bags 💼 containing rubbish because they are searching for food 🍱 waste. They are called seagulls because they swim 🏊♂️ in the sea 🌊 everyday. Seagulls are founded to be in cities 🌃, towns, and villages. Seagulls have been near people’s houses 🏘️ 🏠 🏡. 👍 👍 👍
Holy 💩
They cant eat chocolate
This is just crazy.
hope they got the bodies out first

I hate when history is destroyed! Charlotte NC I’d a prime example of a city that hates to keep its history!!!
wow talk about HYPER HYPERBOLE ...... oh, my HISTORY IS DESTROYED.
You deploy 2 Apaches to fly in the same pattern for a half hour for a festival!!??! Really! Ok. Tell me me why. It doesn’t make sense.
I don’t buy this story.
If this was a festival performance, why were the Birds circling around in a pattern for 25 minutes?? For a show, they would do a fly by.
Nice of the local authorities to (not) inform the citizens; especially veterans, that this was happening. I freaked out in my own home to see these Apaches flying over my home. FAIL!!!
I gotta watch bird videos in slow motion to see what is happening. Lol so fast! Btw where is this? Here in nova scotia Canada herring gulls do not have those black wing tips
This is in Salem, Massachusetts, USA.
22:20 I'm a conductor on the commuter rail and everytime I pass this spot, I think about this wreck. I was born 9 years and 6.5 years after the wreck.
I had to give up watching it was making me feel sick. So much for the church helping the community. They didn't try and reclaim any of the beautiful old building.
Thank you. This presentation was truly amazing and extremely informative and obviously very sad.
What a shame!
Thank you for this presentation- very well done !! Bless your heart & the victims, their families & the survivors. I have rode in the Budd RDCs & one of their predessors, the Pennsy "Doodlebugs", as they were lovingly called. 🚬😎
What noise dose a dinner make, bazaar,,& the fireman, was an idiot making a statement, as, so,, what math class did he graduate from,, given a propane, explosion in detail to the narrator of this video,,just tell what you know in fact ,,
hope your not paying him by the hour !
Thank you so much for a beautiful and insightful memorial of this tragedy and thanks for sharing your own experiences. Rest in peace to all those who have passed away in the tragic accident and everybody who survived it. I wish them well. I would like to know if they were able to reinstall that monument in the victims’ honor? Thank you
Yes, after the monument was found, it was reinstalled at the train station shortly after this video was made.
@@SFICA9 I get on at Swampscott station every night to take the train home to Manchester. I just noticed the monument yesterdayand I knew that I had never seen it there before. It's on the right side of the old depot building. Do you know where it used to be?
@@josebro352 Not sure where it was before.
CAST IRON RADIATORS ARE THE BEST! BUT NOW THEY ARE TOAST! I NEVER LIKED URBAN SPRAWL.
Yes talking about death, the funeral home has suffered a painful death.
I would like to see the initial setup process. That looks nuts, lol.
Throw loads of food.....! All can eat. Respect my friend 👍
Just wondering if they could have donated the windows and doors.
I don't understand why they don't start at the top of building
I was 2 years old living in Beverly. My dad spoke of it when I was older.
Must’ve sounded amazing! That’s what north station sounded like. All 10 tracks just filled with F40’s and GP40MC’s with the loud hum of the head end generators filling the platforms.
Wth... what kind of ghettos set up is this? Smokestacks are suppose to die beautiful explosives deaths not this piece by piece crap.
6:58 Having some problems there buddy? 🤣LMAO, serves ya right
I Love This Street Light!
The slate on roof should have been removed. There are a lot of buildings that could have used it for roof repair work.
Really?
