The modern reading of the name is “Takachiho,” but it was called “Takachio” in the olden days. The mere mention of the name is enough to make one feel a sense of sleep as mythology and modernity intersect and the scenery that comes into view. Surrounded by fierce mountains, the deep valley is shrouded in thick fog every morning. Mt. Futakami, the center of the region, is made up of two peaks, O-dake (male peak) and Me-dake (female peak). It is said to be the place where the gods descended from, and many myths are still passed down to the next generation. Although Mt. Futakami appears peaceful at first glance, its peaks have been famous since ancient times as the site of battles between demons and gods. The “Legend of Kihachi,” as it is known here, may tell the thrilling story of the truth behind the myth.
Kihachi is said to be a fearsome demon god who reigned over the area and ruled the villages. The villagers were frightened by the tyranny of Kihachi and prayed to him daily. But finally, Takemikazuchi no Mikoto, who accompanied the descent of Amateru, challenged Kihachi. The battle between the two was fierce, and they clashed at the top of Mt. Kihachi's power frightened even the gods, but Takemikazuchi no Mikoto's mighty sword cut down the demi-god, and peace returned to the mountain. Peace returned to the mountain. However, if we look at this story from Onihachi's point of view, it appears as if the indigenous people who originally lived in the area have been deprived of their land and invaded. Only the mountains of Takachiho know which side of the story is true, but I feel that Kihachi is more realistic in this place where we can feel the presence of the ancient gods of the land even in the present day.
When I am in the mountains, where a dense white mist envelops the mountains so that I cannot see my feet, and where the rain and thunder are so intense that the gods and demons seem to awaken once again, I feel a sense of certainty that this is the source of the inochi, the life force that breathes life into the ecosystem and gives birth to it. For a moment, the rain clouds and thick fog clear, and a sea of clouds spreads over the mountains of Takachiho. It was as if the boundary between the world of the gods and the world of the earth appeared before our eyes. The past and future weave into the present, and even now, demons whisper in the ears of the gods as the land where legends still live and breathe.
