DIY Kimono Jacket from 1 Meter of Fabric! Easy Sewing Tutorial for Beginners (Mid-Century Style)
I dont know if should ask here but im curious.. so there is a character from game called genshin impact, her name is yumemizuki mizuki, a lot of people debating whether she using a kimono or yukata, and also saying that her outfit is very disrespectful bcs how short it is, what do you think about it?
I find fem kimonos so pretty! I know it takes time and effort, but i would love to wear a kimono one day!
i love how passionate you are, this is such a cool fun fact
Thankyou so much! I do love Kimono! There are so many great facts!
So helpful, just like the left over right if you are alive.
I was thinking about butchering kimonos so it’s not as long. Peplum in the back with some stiff tulle to make it flare out just a little bit (but nothing Lolita about it), make the front look more like a haori but have some slits in the back near the waist of the kimono and shirt to have something that still looks like an obi, but much slimmer and more modern.
Oh wow this sounds incredible! The tulle is a great idea!
You have to tell me how this goes!
The more you know...🙂
Hahhahaha I need to make that jingle!
As ever, a clear and informative video that gets straight to the point! Thank you!! Also, haven't tuned in in a while and you seem to have lost weight, which I only raise insofar as I'd be interested in your insights for dressing kimono for various body shapes, particularly vintage ones - it's a common misconception that kimono are all the same size!! I'm a tall woman and have many kimono that I'd love to wear but are just too short for me in the sense that I never have enough fabric for an ohashiori. It makes me feel self conscious that people will think I'm an uninformed foreigner wearing it 'wrong' by not having ohashiori, so many beautiful old kimono are lingering in drawers or I just wear them at home. In western sizing I'd be 'slim' but because I have a narrow waist compared to hips/bust, I have to pad out the middle of my kimono for the aspirational cylinder shape, and I always feel very bulky wearing kimono. Definitely not graceful and elegant haha.
Its hard to find vintage Kimonos that fit the western form. When I first went to Japan I was told I wouldnt find one to fit me and to be honest I still havent found one. Its a big part of why I started to make Kimono. I wanted to wear them so I found out how to do it!
I've never seen anyone bring up this fact anywhere before, and I've owned a few Yukata/Kimono. Very neat!
Brilliant isnt it!? It is such a great little part of Japanese clothing that just makes me smile
Bro you are a life saver planning on going to japan this year so I’m studying all about it and I my girlfriend ordered a kimono online and I keep telling myself I think it’s wrong because it to loose 👍
They wrap around the body and can fit a lot of sizes with just one. The one I am wearing in this video also fits the size 6 mannequin and Im a chunky guy!
Awww. I love your enthusiasm for kimonos.😊
Thankyou so much! Im so glad that comes across! Do you own a kimono?
@ I own 5+ kimonos. I still need some under garment pieces to wear the obi for my furisodes. Would love to see a video on that!
I cannot wait to make some videos about the accessories that go with kimono! Its a whole world on its own isnt it!? Where do you wear your kimonos?
@ honestly I don’t know. I was hoping while shopping in Kyoto. But the Japanese ppl at the snack bar kind of laughed at the idea and didn’t give an answer one way or the other if it’s in bad taste to wear a furisode out.
Usually the Japanese people I have spoken too or heard talking about Kimono have no issue with anyone wearing Kimono. It is daunting to wear in Japan for the first time so I understand how you felt especially with the people laughing! Eek! If you are planning on wearing Kimono in Japan it is important to get the ensemble correct. Furisode is the most formal Kimono for unmarried women and is worn in a very certain way with specific accessories again worn in a specific way. They are like an evening gown to put them into context. I bet you looked like a god with the sleeves fluttering in the breeze though!
He sounded wayyyy too enthusiastic when he said “left over rice” 😐
What? Ngl you’re just hating
How good is left over rice!! I was so hungry when I filmed this hahahahhaha
If the wearer is bigger then would it be made with different fabric width or added piece?
First the seam allowances would be narrowed using this fabric after that there are options. In the land of the sumo there are obviously considerations made and there is wide gauge fabric for that and then yes they do add trangular godets under the arms that fall to the hem to widen the garment. This method was particularly popular when the Japanese made kimono for export in the 1800s to Europe where women wore giant crinoline skirts
The elegant simplicity of garments constructed of just rectangles is really astounding!
Arent they just amazing! To be honest I am still to scared to cut the tanmono in the video! Eeekkk! Its such beautiful cotton
Kimaurnaur 😂
Ar naur am I a bit Okka!? Hahahhaha brilliant
I don't know why I got suggested your videos, but I'm glad I did because I love kimono! I am curious, why kimono? You have so many resources about making Japanese Kimono, and it's lovely, because while I love the Japanese language, I'm not fluent, so having stuff in English is great. But I am so curious why you make them and what got you into them? If you don't mind me asking, that is! I didn't see any videos that seems to cover that. Your channel is amazing!
Oh you are so kind! I am a fashion illustrator and like anyone in fashion the moment I saw a kimono I fell head over heels in love! So I started drawing them and wanted to see how they were made. That was a rabbit hole that I am still currently falling down 15 years later!! Theyre just so beautiful!
@@houseofkimono Wow! I love that so much! Thank you for sharing that with me, and for sharing what you've learned with us all! I saw you say you've even had to dig through Japanese texts and stuff, I can tell it's a labor of love.
You will know that the Japanese sources are plenty but translation is not yet up to scratch. I had one instruction to “close the wedding dog before painting the seam” hahahaha this was for preparing a seam! They can be so funny sometimes!
Jesus loves you ❤
Thank you so much!
Kimono (as well as other folk garments) have often been made to incorporate the entire weaving width, so as to not waste any of it. Fabric in Japan traditionally was very expensive,so people used every bit for a garment and wasted nothing. The normal width of the fabric straight off the loom was 16" wide - so by cutting it into strips and designing a garment made onl of rectangles, it was the most economical use of this valued resource. You can check out their use of old garments, by a piecing technique known as "Boro". Even when old and tattered, garments were repaired and reused for generations - that's how precious the fabric was for people.
Isnt it an amazing part of their culture!
I had no idea! Although I now wonder about kimono for children or smaller people for whom a full width of fabric would be too much. But this makes sense why long sleeves that hang nearly to the floor would be a sign of wealth.
Sometimes with smaller garments large folds are added to the pannels and then let out as the person grows. Otherwise smaller lengths or special fabric can be used for the smaller kids especially for the 3,5,7 celebrations
Thanks, i learned something
I am so glad to hear that! Thank you
Wow no curves, this might be something I can actually sew.
It is almost meditative when you get into the long straight seams! I have a full kimono making course on my youtube channel when youre ready!
I now have a burning desire to sew an extravagant kimono. I can say it's a next step on my cosplay journey. Far easier to sew than a greatcoat, ehich ive already done!
Ooohhh what characters kimono will you make! This is so exciting!
@houseofkimono I'm absolutely in love with the kimono and kanzashi of Madam M from the FF7 Remake. So beautiful! Or maybe Katen Kyokotsu from Bleach. It's so difficult to choose!
Madam M!!!! This is amazing! I am painting some black silk with gold paint right now in that maki-e style! It is a labour of love that takes everything from me but it is such a reward! Oh you have to do that! Get pebeo gold gutta paste, jacquard lumiere gold 550 paint and some either taffeta or dupion or even a metalesse and you are going to be a god!
@@houseofkimono Oh, thank you so much for the material recommendations! I admit, I was getting a bit lost in the research rabbit hole for a while. That will definitely help me out actually getting this off the ground. Thank you! It's such a gorgeous character design. I fell in love with it the moment I first saw it. I hope there's videos of your own process in using these materials; it'd be an enormous help to see how it's done!
Oh I am so happy to have helped even a little! I have made a video about painting fabrics on my channel the Kalamkari video shows me using gutta paste and colours and also shows how I plan the placement of the motifs. I am still making the gold on black but will post that soon! Keep me posted on your progress and come to me with questions whenever you need!
Hmm
It was so much fun making the video! My arms were killing me filming all the pattern pieces!
You answered a question that's been bothering me for ages! I watched a video on kimono dyeing and painting, and it was all these really long strips and nothing else, so I thought "Oh, maybe they're only recording dyeing the obi sections. They're a bit long though, so maybe they trim it to get more than one obi? Weird that this says dyeing kimono and shows kimono at the end, but they never show us them actually dyeing them." They literally were, I just had no idea they came in strips like that until now 😂
I still remember when I first found out it blew my mind! Watching them decorate these strips is incredible and a whole art form all in itself!
@@houseofkimonoI saw a show where the oji wanted to have one of his late wife's kimono altered for their granddaughter (about 6yo). The gentleman kept flinching when the tailor brought his snips to the kimono. The tailor explained that the fabric would not be cut down, just cut apart & resewn. It was completely reversible & the little girl, if she took care of the kimono, could wear it throughout her life. Here's my question: how can the extra fabric be sewn to fit a little girl? I remember having kimono for o-bon festival & they weren't bulky as I recall. How is it the same pieces can be fitted to a child AND an adult? 😮
Amazing to watch but isnt it!? Yes kimono are taken apart for re sizing and to be cleaned and then are cherished across generations. For a young girl of 6 there would be a lot of folding exes fabric and making large “pleats” that jut out from the shoulders and under the are to make the fabric area smaller without subtracting. Then as she grew these would be removed until the full size garment is reborn! Isnt it wonderful!? Think of the seat of a mens trouser and that excess that is put in for the man to grow in to but across the whole garment
The things I’ve learned on a snowy day…… Thank you.
Oh I am so happy!! This is amazing! Do you wear kimono?
@ No, but after watching you, I think I should.
You should!!! I just wear mine around the house and they are so comfortable!
@@houseofkimono now I have to try one! Where should I look for one? I’m in the Midwest, USA.
@@houseofkimono Well, I think I’m about to spend a lot of time on your channel researching this.
I would love to make a furisode jacket❤ Im too nervous to deconstruct the ones i already own
Oh I understand that! Its so scary cutting into something like that! Will you have the furisode sleeves on a jacket like this?
Nice! Thank you.
It was so fun to make!
What is the width of the fabric? 43-45", or 54-58"? Or, what cm width? Thank-you.
The fabric in this video is 150cm which is around 60inches. You can do it with 110cm / 43inch fabric but you may need to cut the sleeves separately
@houseofkimono Thanks so much!
Its fine! What fabric do you have?
@@houseofkimono I've just ordered a black, silk/cotton blend with a medium drape - not too stiff, not too droopy. 🖤
This is going to be so comfortable and fell amazing plus the cotton in it will make it so much easier to sew! How exciting!!
Gorgeous! Thank you so much. Best to you in 2025. 🪭🪭🪭
Thank you so much!! What fabric will you use!?
Have you made reversibles! So easy.
What a great idea! I havent but it would be amazing!

Very very nice. could you explain more in detail the second part of the video? thank you very much
Thank you so much. What would you like to know?
This is so cool !!
Oh thankyou so much!! I was such a great learning curve!
I agree
What do you make?
I have always wanted to make a kimono and your tutorials are very clear and straightforward. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise
Oh you are so kind!! Im so happy they are helping! How is it coming along
hello what is the difference between fabric A and B??
Its the width of the fabric. Fabric A is 140-150cm / 55-60” and Fabric B is 110-120cm / 43-47”. These are the two most widely available fabric widths but the cutting system still works for fabrics just outside these. What fabric do you have?
Thank you so much for the tutorial! Just finished mine using a combo of this playlist + the PDFs. I'm absolutely delighted with it!
Oh Im so happy! They were made to be used together this is amazing!!
Absolutely incredible video! ❣️ Not only is your breadth of knowledge clear and incredibly helpful, but your passion also makes it such a fun watch! This is exactly what I needed to help me pick out a fabric for an upcoming kimono project. Thank you so much for the upload!
How exciting! Thank you for those lovely words! What did you choose???
@@houseofkimono Linen! I was thinking to myself 'Wow, I wonder if there was a fabric that I could use during both the hot summer and colder winters without overheating or freezing' and then I heard your section on linen! 😆
YES! Its soooo good! Oh you are going to love it!
Your personality is so endearing. I have subscribed to your channel! :)
Thank you so much and welcome! Do you sew too?
just beautiful! well done👏👏❣
Thank you! It was a lesson in EVERYTHING! Im so happy with it!
Amazing design!
Thank you so much! I wanted to match Kalamkari with Japanese Kano school perspective! I just love it!
A top tip from Catherine Sews: a walking foot stops the fabrics getting out of alignment. At least it works when matching stripes!
Oh thats brilliant! I want to try one of them!
Wow! What a beautiful garment, just started to work on mine. Got the fabric from japan. So happy i have found you❤
Ah! Thats such a lovely thing to hear! Thank you so much! You have to tell me how it all goes and come to me if you need help!!!
Okay so the sewn in width should be 15cm, so after edges are sorted it needs to be more.
Yes the sewn finished width when you put it on for the first time but remember to not be too fastidious. You can have leeway either way
Hi there! I'm a little confused. Should the okumi be 15cm total width AFTER folding and sewing the raw edges? 🤡
Yes. Once raw edges have been dealt with and once it is attached to the body it should be 15cm. This is generally the right width but you can move a cm larger or smaller. Generally you want the okumi to “appear” half the width of the body piece, not exactly by thereabouts. I hope that helped. Please come to me with any other questions!
Very beautiful!
Thank you so much! Isnt it just!? I adored making this one so much. Very interesting to see how the saree works and fabric changes as it goes in and out of brocade work!
They are so beautiful! The silk ones and the painted one is very lovely. Can I ask about the seams? Is it a design feature to sew the inner and outer seams together so that you can see the edges? I've made blouses and coats etc and always try and hide the seams as much as possible. I guess it's down to how nice the seams look? I've enjoyed watching your videos, keep up the good work!
Thank you for the kind words! The seams are exposed when you “back” instead of “line” a garment. It takes more time to do because it usually has to be hand sewn to hold them down and open. This is why it is rarely seen or taught. It is something you choose to do for the reasons I covered but any pattern would advise you otherwise because of the extra work. They do look great, especially on the first one with the highly textured fabric
Thanks for that! We definitely weren't taught backing when I learnt to sew! I can see the advantages as the backing fabric reinforces the lighter fabric, rather than just being a lining. Cheers for your reply. @@houseofkimono
Thank you for your interest! I love that I have a place where I just talk about kimono and sewing with people!
Can you get hemp material
I havent come across hemp in my travels or shopping but i have never sought it out. Hemp is a great idea and in japan is and was commonly uses to create summer outfits. Ramie is another hemp like fibre thats used in that way!
