Post-Game Fan Reaction: Oilers vs Maple Leafs - 11.16.24
Forward Mitch Marner scored 40 seconds into extra time to give Toronto the extra point after Leon Draisaitl tied the game with Edmonton's net empty in the final two minutes of the third period. Darnell Nurse was head-shotted by Ryan Reaves early in the second period, and Reaves will likely be suspended for several games. Absolute plug.
The Oilers held a 2-1 lead through 40 minutes off goals from Adam Henrique and Connor McDavid, but the Maple Leafs scored two fortunate goals in 59 seconds of the final frame, forcing the Blue & Orange into needing an equalizer from Draisaitl in the final seven minutes of regulation. #oilers #edmontonoilers #nhl

I don't think Bouchard couple mistakes would look so bad if skinner wasn't playing worse than an ahl goalie. Love the guy but man. You see opponent defence make mistakes and give mcdavid and drai big chances constantly but they don't put 75% in the ent because opponent goalies can make saves. Skinner can make saves but then just let's through so many doozies...

Astounding the love shown to Skinner and Campbell by the same people who shet all over Koskinen , who was far better then both of them. I think when people either get very worried about not being able to make the playoffs, or get into the playoffs and get goalied out, that phony love will suddenly be very gone. As for Nurse, hate to see any hurt, but keep your head up. Reaves doesn't belong in the NHL? Well he is in the NHL, and players like him will always be in the NHL, so keep your head up!

I think u are right on all of your points and I do think it actually starts with them never extending the lead with so many chances. It’s not just the 5 min pp. but they began outchancing the leafs from the 5 on 3 kill till the 2-2 goal. This teams top 6 wingers have zero finish. The entire offensive production seems to be mcdrai right now with the odd bottom 6 goal. If we extend the lead. A bonehead bouch play doesn’t flip the game on its head and we probably walk out with a regulation W. 3 games in a row of this! Those guys are as much to blame as the obvious 2 guys!

At some point you need to sit Bouchard on the bench. He has been responsible for multiple blown leads. He’s almost become unplayable when we are up in the last ten minutes of the game. For Skinner, I honestly think he’s just overthinking it. He’s still one of the youngest starters in the league so I still have patience with him. I can see us upgrading pickard at the deadline, so we have more goalie insurance.

I am not panick-ing at all, all signs are good in the Oilers' game, however several players need to find another gear, most of all mentally. I was at the first game of the season in the arena, and if I saw correctly, they have an ARMY of mental-trainers and psychologists. That team needs to be fired, I do not see a 'mental strength' with many of the players: Skinner, Bouch, etc. Further, today McDavid appeared to me 'stressed' to play in front of friends and family. 7 of 10 passes, he should have shot, he passes unnecessarily, or loses the puck, then gives a power-play, etc. For me both McDavid and Draisaitl played at 60% throttle, their mental focus was not really there. Was a great chance to get past the flames and stay unto the Canucks, now they are again rather closer to the bottom of the division with Fames, Canucks and Kraken winning. Yes, we need a BETTER goalie, Skinner cannot be our Number 1 goalie. We need Bouch to wake TF up and be focused 60 minutes. And we need McDavid and Draisaitl to have 100% killer instinct and stop over-passing like Messi, and rather shoot more often!

Hasek tripped Gaborik and turned him into a gymnast. Totally agree with your assessment. Skinner needs to be decisive. The OT goal shows how poor his fundamentals are when he has no confidence. Boouch plays that 2 on 1 textbook by taking away the pass. Skinner is off bis angle and not square to Marner. All he has to do is stay square. Instead hes in a half butterfly looking stance for whatever reason and stick side is open now. What a time to make a mistake.

100% agree'd with you on Ryan Reaves, Austin. I love a good hard hit, but that hit was 100% targeted.. if you have any level of objectivity, watching the replay, he had EVERY opportunity to take Nurse's body on that hit.. but he went around Nurse's body, and up in to his chin... Did he leave his feet? No, he didn't.. but it doesn't matter.. the dude needs to be ejected from the NHL because, aside from his lack of production, he's simply a danger on the ice to other players... I don't watch hockey to watch guys get hurt, although I know it does happen.. I watch hockey for the speed of play, skill moves, and team work towards a common goal for a game win.. that's it... Physicality is part of the game, but not the focus.. Reaves should not be part of the game IMO.

@dumbo753 I mean, you’re not wrong, but watching the replay again, I’d also say you’re so completely wrong.. Nurses head is up. Reaves came essentially from behind him in a blind spot, and didn’t even really slow up, or try to take the body.. his eyes are focused up towards nurses upper body/head… I can understand getting leveled when not paying attention, but on the other side of the coin, when playing hockey, your actions have to be centered towards forwarding the game.. taking nurse out at his body to get the puck away from him would have been a hockey play.. but what reaves did crosses the line in to “intent to injure” in my view, as he didn’t really even try for the puck, and his check wasn’t focused towards the body..that was not a hockey play that should be promoted or justified, even if nurses head was down.. But you’re entitled to your opinions..

If any Oiler deserves to be crushed, it is Nurse. He has a history of injuring players, high-sticking players at the neck, cross-checking plyers in the lower back and elbowing players in the head, Nurse has been given a pass by the league and should have been suspended numerous times

Really appreciate your level-headed analysis after these emotional games. Stuart Skinner won me over so much in the playoffs last year that he was my first (and probably only Adidas, which is a whole other topic) jersey and I'm still a huge fan of the effort and ability he's given the Oilers despite being thrown into a situation that he really wasn't ready for (and probably still isn't). His downturn lately is concerning, but I'm still expecting him to morph back into that playoffs-caliber goalie that we saw last year. With how McDavid has only recently turned that corner, I have to wonder if Skinner is still beating himself up over that glove-side goal in game 7, and also if maybe he's dealing with some sort of injury that's hampering his lateral movement. I also have to wonder if the fact that he's played so off lately is shaking the confidence the D has in him, which is making them make mistakes, which is in turn making him have to overthink. I saw someone mention on the Oilers subreddit that only having Bouchard back on the OT goal couldn't have been good for Skinner's decision making in terms of pass vs. shot. I definitely think the Reaves hit sucked the energy out of the roster and made it a much harder game for them overall, especially when Nurse has been playing so well and having him available for the rest of the game would have meant more bodies to go around for their probably exhausted defense. It's really a shame that such an overall good hockey game ended like this one did. I'm so conflicted because there was a lot of good hockey played by the Oilers (and the Leafs, in all fairness), and then three mistakes flipped the entire thing on its head. Wild. Thanks for your Oilers analysis! I always look forward to your videos and I'm rooting for you to hit that big 5k soon!

It’s a team game buddy gotta do your part, he has no grit, cowers at every fight, bad teamwork, and can’t produce offensively. Yet coach never holds him accountable. The team scoring 1 goal in game 7 didn’t help. He didn’t lose them a cup, but he is costing them points in the standings this season and does not look comfortable at all

@@AHockey1993come on austin there werent many scoring chances in game 7. That reinhart goal wasnt even a scoring chance. Maybe they get that second goal at 1-1

@@nenochukich7504 You can say the same thing about Bobrovsky as well for letting the series even get to game 7.

I cannot emotionally recover from this game. I was in a Toronto pub tonight wearing my Oilers jersey surrounded by Leafs fans and a kid came up to my face and taunted me (which was adorable). I JUST LOST THE ARGUMENT TO A CHILD ITS SO OVER FOR ME

As much as I love Stu, if he doesn't show signs of turning it around by December the team absolutely has to pull the trigger to get help in net.

@@AHockey1993I agree Iove Stu we've seen it before but he's been horrible. I just don't know what's wrong, I think the pressure is too much for him to handle. I feel really bad for him but make a save bud.

I’ll take the point. Evan and Stuart definitely got some serious issues to work out. It’s early so nothing to freak out over but it’s getting old now. I’m hope Nurse isn’t hurt too bad. Prayers for him.

How long are you gonna keep saying " it's early " ? Teams miss playoffs by a single point all the time , they ALL matter and maybe that point decides home ice or just making the playoffs later on .

THIS WAS NEEDLESSLY FRUSTRATING. Even Bouchard cannot for the life of him keep control of the puck. And honestly, the last goal was iffy to let in but I’m more frustrated that skinner gave us a good chance to really win, but we didn’t. Horrid turnovers and effort by Bouchard, Praying for Nurse and that he’s okay. I agree with you by the way on the overreacting. Just disappointing game
