HOW TO AVOID BRACE OR BTV WHEN YOU TAKE CONTACT
To avoid the horse bracing against the hand and the contact avoid pulling directly back on the reins. Instead lift one rein and ask for lateral flexion. The bend supples the horse and eliminates brace.
Once you have lateral bend, yoou can squeeze both reins to ask for the horse to give poll flexion (but stay bent whilst doing it) and if the horse doesn't come into frame avoid pulling the horse into frame, simply use your voice, seat or legs to tuck the pelvis and drive the horse over the topline into the bridle and onto the bit.
Always follow any poll flexion with a neck extension, no matter the length of the frame. A neck extension doesn't mean "long and low" it means lengthening the space between the vertebrae and keeping the throat latch open. If you for example have a collected frame, you would simply give your elbows an inch forward every few seconds to "stretch" the neck slightly.
To fix Behind the vertical BTV
1. Lift up the nose (bring your hands forward)
2. lift up the withers (bring your hands over the withers)
3. Create lateral flexion
4. Ask for poll flexion with lateral flexion
5. Give neck extension (stretch the neck slightly forward)

BENDING FOR BALANCE & THROUGHNESS - HALF HALT AND THE CIRCLE (DRESSAGE, HORSEMANSHIP)
มุมมอง 1266 หลายเดือนก่อน
It's never just the mouth that yields to bit pressure. If the mouth, head and neck yield to the hand of the rider without the rest of the horse yielding all the way into the hock, then this is what is referred to as a false frame. When the rider takes contact on the bit, the whole top line of the horse must respond. The way to test this, is through a half halt in the shape of a circle. We need ...
BEND SUPPLES THE HORSE - FROM THE FRONT (DRESSAGE, HORSES)
มุมมอง 1086 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video is similar to the Bending for balance video, but shot from the front to help the viewer see the C shape through the horse more clearly. Bending supples he horse and removes the bend whilst also allowing the inside hind leg to step towards the point of weight as the hips swings forward due to the bend. TEACHING YOUR HORSE HOW TO FOLLOW THE FEEL (CLASSICAL DRESSAGE, FEEL, HORSE)
มุมมอง 1586 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video will give you tips on teaching your horse how to follow the feel. Putting awareness and feel into practice with the horse from the ground starts by setting a clear intention as to what you are looking for, so you know what to observe as you start training the horse. 1. Make a decision as to what you want and set the intention. An intention is a type of promise/idea or plan that you "...
DEVELOPING AWARENESS AND FEEL TO IMPROVE YOUR RIDING (CLASSICAL DRESSAGE, FEEL, CONTACT)
มุมมอง 1286 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video will describe how to develop awareness and feel to improve; how to develop fluidity, harmony and flow in your ride. One of the first things needed to develop fluidity is our ability to feel contact and connection and many riders struggle with feel… Here is a little 5 step tip on how to improve your feel that I’ve played with over the years. Lack of feel basically comes from not being...

How to perform the walk pirouette from the ground
มุมมอง 2932 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video my client and fellow Liberty trainer Sherri is starting to teach her driving pony Smokes how to perform the walk pirouette from the ground. The goal is eventually to do it at Liberty. Smokes knows how to sidepass away from and towards Sherri, so she uses that exercise to get Smoked started in the pirouette and then gradually changes position from being next to him to being behind ...
Working with the owner and a young stallion who has a tendency to lean on the inside shoulder
มุมมอง 1782 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I’m working with the owner and a young stallion who has a tendency to lean on the inside shoulder through the canter transition to the left either resulting in picking up the wrong lead, running in the trot before cantering or hopping into the canter. When it comes to the leading leg, the shoulder must be lifted, so I ask the rider to half halt the outside rein keeping the horse b...

training this young horse to stretch the topline forward down
มุมมอง 1882 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I’m training this young horse to stretch the topline forward down and then give me a plié/Stellung in both directions. The plié means to flex the head without the rest of the body falling out of the shape. When asked to do this the horse should keep her head in the same height all the way around and simple look left and then right without resistance. If the movement is correct it ...
Horse with tendency to stiffen the inside neck and fall on the inside shoulder...
มุมมอง 922 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, the horse I’m working with has a tendency to stiffen the inside neck and fall on the inside shoulder thereby throwing his haunches to the outside of the circle. This is a common problem when riding or training horses. As a solution I ask the horse to bend and step away from the inside rein which I’m communicating by pushing slightly in the middle of his neck on the inside. This c...

Beautifully explained. I often feel my ride is determined by the first taking of contact.
Try this when they come behind: in a relaxed rhythm, add leg & push your hands forward with the feeling in the hand like you are throwing a sheet over bed. Also, lovely pony :)
Great idea. Your horse seems little tense- which makes him stiff. Would rather see a video with handler being more aware of how they hold lead/ touch horse and notice where the horse is.
Dressage pony!!! but how do you do this on 16.3h?
Very intuitive & helpful. 👍🏼
Great video - thanks. My worry is that the cue for lifting the leg is similar to the cue for just picking the feet out. My mare learns so fast I’m worried she’ll be bowing every time I’m picking her feet out or the farrier comes! Am I worrying unnecessarily?
My horse moves his hind end when I turn his head. He also tries to resist by tossing his head.
That's amazing.
well done..
So lovely. I was watching your long rieining instruction but unable to comment. What is "jo flexion" please ? You said it 3 times...!!!
Hey! The word I’m saying is “Jaw Flexion” - teaching the horse to flex his jaw allows him mobilize his tongue, swallow and free his sternum in order to lift his back. To learn more about jaw Flexion you can download my free Ebook on the subject here artfulriding.thinkific.com/courses/jawflexion
Aldo does the same thing close to fence! Drives me nuts. Maybe we need to make a big sand pit out in the middle of the field for them to roll in. 😂
I don’t think it’s bareback (no hate)
You’re right, we meant bareback pad 😊
Oh ok! I just thought I saw a saddle 😂 I have really bad vision!😂
@@Leah_six It is a Christ Lammfelle (sheepskin) bareback pad - it's wonderful to ride in. You can attach stirrups to it as I have in this video.
@@ConnectedDressage ohh ok! I’ll have to look into buying one!

Hello how are you hope you guys doing good
Right, so I tapped his leg and got nothing! Not a blink. No reaction! I decided then to tap and pick up his foot. Is that the right or wrong thing to do?
I tap my colt on the back of his leg to get him to stand up for halter. When I started I tapped on the bottom of his leg but now we have moved up to the top near his girth area. Have you ever taught this to a horse and use the tapping cue when they already have a tapping cue that means something else?
Love these videos very help ful easy to understand.
My horse likes to side step so I put her up against the fence but now everytime she shifts her weight back she steps back with the other one, wondering what I could do to fix that
I’m really enjoying your videos!
Excellent demonstration!
Brilliant video!! So helpful!
Great video and stunning horse! I'm currently trying to teach a horse to bow, but when I hold his leg and ask him to shift his weight back he will actually put weight into the hand holding his leg and try to walk backwards. Obviously I can't hold his weight and end up having to break it off. I don't really want to use ropes/tie him up. Do you have any tips?
Get his but up against a fence. Dont pick up his leg just lure him with a treat between his two front legs to get used to shifting the weight back. Once he is good at that without backing than pick uo his leg(fence still behind him) eventually leave the fence
The magic spot was impossible to see because Kathy was in the way
Great video, I chanced on this in a search, and it addresses several issues I am dealing with. Great visual and thank you!
