Governor Lingle, General Lee, General Miyagi - we are honored by your presence. I was privileged to have served under your command in the Hawaii National Guard with the 111th Army Band during your tenure. You may remember my brother, Staff Sergeant Samuel Hesch, who used to lead the singing of the National Anthem and Hawaii Pono'i at the Iraq and Afghanistan deployment ceremonies and "freedom salutes," and continues to do the same at University of Hawaii football, basketball, and volleyball games. This award is a reflection of the shared efforts of everyone in our Band & Orchestra program, so my remarks will frequently be more collective in nature. Our program has been fortunate to have enjoyed some larger successes recently, but I take the most pride in the overall quality and consistency that we've been able to sustain in the hundreds of students that we've influenced over the years. With an ever-changing society, anyone in the Education field can tell you that it's not getting any easier to do our jobs - consistency can be rare, and progress is often difficult to achieve, so Donna and I are fortunate. We are thankful for the many people that have provided support and assistance to us in our efforts. The faculty and staff at McKinley have gone out of their way countless times over the years to accommodate us, whether it be reserving facilities for our rehearsals & performances, pulling our students out of other classes for performances during school hours, or helping us get the right paperwork submitted properly. Our principal Mr. Ron Okamura has been tremendous in his support, even when it created challenges for him. He secured immediate funding to put down a deposit for the travel reservations for our performance at Carnegie Hall, and wrote letters of recommendation for the most recent national award that our program received, which helped put us over the top with the selection committee. Our Band & Orchestra Boosters have always been there for us over the years, taking time out of their busy schedules to help raise funds, chaperone our students at football games & trips, and provide manpower behind the scenes for the dozens of student performances each year. The McKinley Alumni Association has always supported us each year, but you played a significant role in our success at Carnegie Hall. Without your financial support, we would not have been able to make the purchases of equipment and music necessary for our award-winning performance, and the result would have been quite different. On a personal note, I'd like to express my deepest thanks to former McKinley principal Mr. Richard Sakamoto for his long-time support. He is also the man who first hired Donna many years ago to take the reins of the McKinley band program. He will tell you that it was one of the best decisions he ever made, and I totally agree. This program continues to succeed because of the firm foundation and nurturing environment that she provides each of our students, allowing them to grow and flourish. Donna received the Tiger Pride Award back in 2012, which was well-deserved back then, and even more so today. I'd like to close things with a short story: You may remember about 15 years ago, back in April 2003, a documentary on the life of Senator Daniel Inouye was unveiled for the first time, with a special world-premiere gala dinner at the Battleship Missouri. Some of you may have been there to celebrate his accomplishments, as he is one of McKinley's own, who represented our school and our state with distinction, in everything he did. Our band was honored to have been invited to entertain the audience with a few songs that evening as part of the formal program. When it came time for Senator Inouye to take the stage, we were asked, unexpectedly, to play something. So what else, but "Black and Gold" - our students have it memorized, so we were able to quickly adjust and play it. We repeated it a few times until he reached the podium, and that was that. Later that evening when we were packing up to leave, a group of older military veterans who had been seated at a table nearby approached us. They wanted to express to us how deeply they had been affected by our performance of the Black and Gold. You see, each of them was a McKinley graduate. We were stunned. Here was a group of genuine heroes, who had made incredible sacrifices to defend our nation and our freedoms - and they were paying tribute to us (!?!) for reconnecting them with the deep & lasting bond that forever unites those of us fortunate to have walked the hallowed halls of McKinley. We will never forget that experience, and have tried over the years to make sure that each of our performances conveys the same spirit, energy, and Tiger Pride. The national recognition we've received is a reflection of how special and unique McKinley Tiger Pride really is, and how deeply & positively it can impact others. So with that, I humbly accept this award, and on behalf of Donna and our students, thank each of you, and the McKinley Alumni Association for your continued support of our band and orchestra program. McKinley High School Dec. 15, 2017 McKinley Band Receives National Recognition! Please join the administrators in congratulating the students of the McKinley High School Band, and their directors, Donna and Thomas Hesch, for being selected as the 2017-2018 Western Division winners of the Music Education Alliance National Award of Excellence! This award was established by the National Band Association and the College Band Directors National Association. It recognizes select educators and their band programs for their exceptional contributions to their school & community, for consistently challenging their students, and for reaching a high level of excellence. Mr. and Mrs. Hesch will be representing McKinley (and the Western Division states of Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and New Mexico) as they travel to the Midwest Clinic International Band & Orchestra Convention in Chicago, Illinois. Thousands of music educators, directors and musicians from around the world will be there on December 20 when they receive the award. We commend them for this well-deserved recognition of their efforts, and are thankful for everything they've done for McKinley over the years. Merle J. Isaac Stasis - Shirl Jae Atwell Comments: Wonderful, full sound! Each section is strong, producing a balanced sound and rich tone quality. Very good discipline in bowings and articulations. Solid intonation! Well-taught and prepared for performance. Bass/Cello section sets a good intonation base for upper voices. Well-done and consistent. Impressive attention to musical details and nuance throughout each piece. Solid rhythm! This is a really well-balanced orchestra - each section is holding their own, the balance and flow is quite good. I'm very impressed with the proficiencies of your orchestra. You've obviously done a terrific job in preparing them, both rehearsal-wise and conceptually. Style and all aspects of interpretation well-done. A pleasure to listen to! This is one of the cleanest performances I've heard - Bravo to you! Excellent discipline and finesse! Great appearance and stage presence! Excellent performance! Bravo! Keep up the great work! McKinley HS Foundation Jul. 1, 2016 President's Message McKinley High School Foundation Newsletter - Summer 2016 Issue July 1, 2016 President's Message: As McKinley enters into its 151st year, we look back at the past 150 years with a great deal of pride and wonderment - the hallowed halls of McKinley have produced many outstanding individuals, who have not only done momentous things for their community - they have also done momentous things that are far reaching worldwide. A big shout out to the McKinley Band and their performance at Carnegie Hall - and a sincere thank you to all who contributed to this prestigious honor. Please take a moment to read about their experience in this newsletter. McKinley Band directors Donna & Thomas Hesch encouraged their students to be the best they can be - and they did, by scoring a 98 out of 100 points, the highest score ever recorded by any band in the history of this invitational band festival. World Assoc. for Symph. Bands & Ensembles May 14, 2016 McKinley Spring Concert A few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to guest conduct the outstanding McKinley High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble I in Honolulu for their 2016 Spring Concert. Several weeks before, I had the privilege of working with this ensemble in New York City as they prepared for their performance at Carnegie Hall, a performance that stunned the large crowd with a high level of artistry that one would not expect from a high school ensemble. Two of the four movements of Vasily Kalinnikov’s “Symphony No. 1 in G minor” were chosen for me to conduct at McKinley's Spring Concert. Composed in Russia in 1894-95, this is an extremely challenging work that is not accessible to most high school bands in the United States. To make matters even more challenging, the final movement calls for two large brass choirs placed in the upper balconies of the hall. Even though I had heard McKinley perform difficult music at Carnegie Hall, I was a bit apprehensive about their ability to adequately perform the Kalinnikov. What I did not know, was that in the short time since returning from New York, they had also prepared Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to “Candide,” and Alfred Reed’s “El Camino Real,” both of which are repertoire for high-level university and professional wind ensembles. Upon my arrival in Honolulu, I was amazed to find that the McKinley ensemble was almost totally prepared to perform these works. McKinley's directors also managed to obtain a large contingent of brass players from the U.S. Marine Corps Pacific Forces Band, as well as McKinley Band alumni, and the President of the Oahu Band Directors Association (in addition to McKinley director Thomas Hesch, an accomplished trombonist) to perform the antiphonal parts in the balconies. I have been conducting university, high school, military, community and professional bands for over 50 years and I can honestly say that the performance by the McKinley Symphonic Wind Ensemble I was among the finest I have ever heard. The student musicians performed far beyond their years. The audience realized they were hearing something very special, responding with a standing ovation and lots of cheering. In addition, the 4½ hour McKinley Spring Concert included wonderful performances by their Chamber Orchestra, String Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble II, and Jazz Ensemble. How two teachers, Donna & Thomas Hesch, routinely overcome the immense challenges they face to produce all of this, year after year, is simply amazing. Coupled with their outstanding display of musicianship, I also witnessed a deep abiding love by the McKinley students for their two teachers during a break in the music, when the students placed what had to have been the longest floral lei in history around the neck of Mrs. Hesch. It is my belief that, in addition to their many hours of hard work, this love and respect accounts for their stunning performances at Carnegie Hall, and in Honolulu a few weeks later. The McKinley High School Band & Orchestra program, under the direction of Donna and Thomas Hesch, is a model of the finest in music education in the nation. I can tell you that it was one of the highlights of my professional career to be a part of such an outstanding event. Congratulations to you all ! William V. Kylie Blaisdell Apr. 27, 2013 Spring Concert - Orchestra President's Message Welcome to our 2013 Spring Concert! The students in the Band & Orchestra worked very hard preparing for this concert. However, none of this would happen if we had not learned discipline, pride, and true love for music. I would like to thank all of the students in this program for dedicating themselves in music. I also thank the Boosters, sectional teachers, and most of all, Mr. and Mrs. Hesch. We would not be where we are today if not for their sacrifices of time to share their knowledge with us. Adult Friends For Youth May 20, 2012 AFY Student Transition Convention On behalf of Frank De Lima and Adult Friends for Youth, we would like to thank the McKinley High School Band from the bottom of our hearts for a fantastic performance! For 21 years, our annual Student Transition Conventions have helped students make the big leap from elementary to middle school, and ease into adolescence. Over 6,000 students participated this year. Melody Kobayashi & Jai Eun Kim Apr. 30, 2011 Spring Concert - Presidents' Message Spring Concert is filled with traditions that have been sustained and passed down from one class to the next. This year we felt that we came together as a group with the right attitude and inspiration to achieve more in music. We'd like to thank the Band & Orchestra Boosters, sectional teachers, and especially Mr. & Mrs. Hesch for all the things they've done for us throughout the year. Without them, we wouldn't have been able to overcome the challenges we faced this year, that helped us grow in music and life. The Band & Orchestra program has made the greatest impact on our high school years. We've met some of our closest friends, and gained leadership skills that will help us in the future. We hope that the underclassmen cherish the traditions, and take away not only musical knowledge, but life lessons as well. Hana Lee May 12, 2007 Spring Concert - Orchestra President's Message I feel as though I've only begun my adventure with the Band & Orchestra, and already 4 years have gone by. Unity, trust, and friendship are all undeniably represented in this program, and I am honored to have been entrusted to such a hard-working and good-natured group. McKinley's Band & Orchestra program is unique, and because of this, I was able to work with a diverse group of people, who all shared a love for music. I was greeted by a pack of eager upperclassmen when I entered the McKinley bandroom for the first time; they came to be known as my "older brothers & sisters" as time passed. They had, without a second thought, offered me a hand with anything I struggled with. Through them, I learned to be a McKinley Tiger, and felt the Pride that lived within their hearts. I'd like to thank those (now Alumni) Band & Orchestra students that had shown me kindness, and hopefully I was able to show the same to my fellow Orchestra students. From my freshman year to senior year, Mrs. Hesch has always shown dedication, support, and love for her students that I've never seen expressed by any other teacher. She went beyond her duties, and like a mother, taught us so many lessons about life. I've never been able to express the limitless gratitude I hold for you, Mrs. Hesch, but I am deeply thankful for all you have done for us. Thank you to the Band & Orchestra Boosters, who have shown us support behind the scenes all through the year. Without you, we wouldn't be able to continue this program so rigorously and with ease. Your support is greatly appreciated! I was touched by the dedication and effort shown by my fellow Orchestra students to improve as the year progressed, culminating in the Superior rating McKinley received at Parade of Orchestras. Zachary Morita May 17, 2003 Spring Concert - Band President's Message Welcome to the 2003 McKinley High School Band & Orchestra Spring Concert! This is a culmination of all the extra rehearsals the students attended throughout the year, and reflects our hard work and dedication to the music. It will put on display our musical growth since the beginning of the school year in August. As the year comes to an end, we reminisce on the fun & memorable moments we experienced - football games, Parade of Bands / Parade of Orchestras, and our trip to California. I would like to personally thank the Boosters and chaperones for making all of these activities possible. Thank you to Mrs. Hesch for working so hard and for supporting me in my musical endeavors. I hope that my fellow seniors will take with them many memories that made their experience in this program worthwhile. I would like to wish the underclassmen the best of luck. 2001-2002 School Year: Donna & Thomas Hesch, Directors At the request of McKinley principal Milton Shishido, Donna (Lum) Hesch agreed to return to the McKinley Band & Orchestra program, which had experienced another significant decline in enrollment during her absence, and was in danger of being shut down. Thomas Hesch (at the request of Donna and principal Milton Shishido) also agreed to contribute his time, effort, and expertise, working with Donna to rebuild the McKinley Band & Orchestra program. He later was appointed Musical Director of the HCCB, and in 2006, under his leadership and baton, the HCCB traveled for the first time in its 33-year history, embarking on a 5000-mile journey to Australia and New Zealand, with several performances in Sydney and Auckland. Under the direction of Thomas Hesch, the Honolulu Community Concert Band received a five-minute standing ovation from the sold-out audience of nearly 4,000 people (including the Mayor of Sydney and the United States Ambassador to Australia) after their stunning debut performance in the main hall of the world-famous Sydney Opera House. Their performance also featured guest soloist Brian Evans (principal trumpet, Sydney Opera Orchestra). So moved were they by the HCCB that the entire audience (nearly 4000-strong) spontaneously burst into song during several of their selections, filling the hall with their voices as they sang and clapped along with the HCCB, in an extraordinary display of musical camaraderie. Thomas Hesch was interviewed live on-the-air by ABC Radio National (Australian national radio) following their amazing achievement. Mr. Hesch and the HCCB were also featured in an article in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin newspaper. Mr. Hesch and the HCCB also received a special invitation from world-renowned bandmaster Toshio Akiyama to perform with the Ohmiya City Wind Symphony in Saitama, Japan. In 1998, Thomas Hesch was observed by the foremost authority on Hawaiian music, noted historian Dr. George Kanahele - founder of the Hawaiian Music Foundation, and author of the comprehensive historical reference book "Hawaiian Music and Musicians." Dr. Kanahele singled out & cited Mr. Hesch and the quality, consistency, attention to detail, passion, and level of care in his work as an example of "Kina'ole" - doing the right thing, in the right way, at the right time, in the right place, to the right person, for the right reason, with the right feeling, each time.
