Researching Everyday Fashion, 1550-1650, in short - Refashioning the Renaissance ERC project
How were early modern textiles and clothing items made? How did it feel to wear or touch typical garments of the Renaissance period, such as doublets or knitted stockings? What level of skill was involved in making these?
In 2017-2022, Professor Paula Hohti and her team carried out research on 16th and 17th-century dress and material culture, experimenting with a combination of methods such as archival research and early modern textile techniques and recipes. The ERC-funded research project Refashioning the Renaissance: Popular Groups and the Material and Cultural Significance of Clothing in Europe 1550-1650 was based in Aalto University, Finland.
About the project:
Refashioning the Renaissance project combined theoretical perspectives and practical hands-on work to investigate how fashion emerged and developed among new social groups in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Europe.
Using documentary sources, visual images, surviving material evidence and historical reconstructions, the project aimed to shed light on popular taste, dissemination, transformation and adaptation of fashion, as well as on meaning and changing cultural attitudes to dress. The central goal of the project was to develop a new material-based methodology and approach to Renaissance fashion. This involved experimenting with a range of techniques, including archival research, technical analysis of textiles, dye- and fibre analysis, and the reconstruction and visualization of historical dress using both 16th-century recipes as well as modern digital tools such as digital animation.
This project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 726195.

Refashioning Experiments: Renaissance Weaving
มุมมอง 3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
How were the fabrics of the Renaissance made? What kinds of skills did early modern weavers use to create fashionable new materials? Most fabrics in the early modern period were woven on looms by professional weavers. To create the elaborate brocades, delicate satins, and plush velvets so fashionable in this era was both complicated and time consuming, and weaving was a highly developed art. It...

Refashioning Experiments: Silk Processing
มุมมอง 3604 ปีที่แล้ว
Silk has been traditionally regarded as the badge of the gentlemen. However, the production of and demand for cheaper and lighter silk fabrics in the sixteenth century made silk accessible for wider consumer groups, including individuals and families at artisan levels. But what was the major difference between lower quality silk, such as filaticcio, preferred by artisans and others of the lower...

I knit and crochet I would love to learn this. I'm disabled my legs and back are bad I was born with a severe leg and foot deformity. And having something I can set and do helps me especially with my depression and anxiety. I have to stop and rest due to my back hurting a lot but this seems like it might help me and be something fun I can do! Thank you for putting this on here!

This is how everyone starts out. It took my grandma about 40 YEARS to do it at a professional speed, then her eyesight started going down. She taught me the basics about 15 years ago and donated all her stuff to me as she couldn't see her work anymore from slowly losing her sight. I should really make something special for her now that she's near blind, but life caught up with me 😢
