Those big, blunt yarn needles can be good for very young kids to practice with, if you give them burlap or some other loosely woven fabric to try. You can set it into an embroidery hoop and thread the needle with colorful yarn so they can just play with it and get used to stab stitches. Probably they'll make a big scribbley type mess, but that's what little kids' art always looks like at first! Yarn is just a different medium. I think it would make a charming sampler to hang up alongside their later work to show how their skill and dexterity can improve over time.

I made Zenki's with my grandchildren this week and they LOVED it! In fact I think I created my own little sewing monsters. They will want to make more every visit!
