    Hi Pat, I am learning how to whipstitch on a single ply piece of very thick cardstock paper (240 lbs+) and I would love to know what you do with the start and end of the leather thread so it doesn't come out and looks nice. Thanks!

      Normally if you are using leather you would have 2 pieces of leather and the lace can be hidden between them and come out where you want to start the stitch. I normally use Loctite Gel Super Glue in a small bottle with squeeze sides and put a tiny bit of glue on the lace between the leather so it will stay put. In your case with only one piece if you will be ending at the start point, skive the last 3/8ths to 1/2 inch so it will lay flat and hide better. Leave that 1/2 inch hanging out till you come all the way around to join. Use the same Loctite Glue to attach the skived tail to the side of your leather (preferably on the back of your project). Make sure it is above your punched holes, and lace over the tail. When you reach the beginning of your stitch, you can just pull it through your first stitches to hide the tail. Put a tiny dot of glue on that end also. You will be able to see the tail slightly but hopefully they will be on the backside and fairly hidden. You could dye the tail of your lace to match your main leather piece. The glue should be allowed to dry untouched overnight. Hope that answers your question.

    How big is the diameter of the fitting?

    • @gotstyledesigns
      @gotstyledesigns 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I used was 6-7mm. Yours could be different depending on how your lace was prepared which could make it thicker or thinner than mine. To make sure yours is correct I would use a seizing knot like you were starting the actual project and braid a couple of inches using the same lace you will be using. Then measure a half inch from the knot down what you have braided. You need a fitting slightly larger so when you put the glue in the fitting that you have room to easily slide your braid inside. One mm too large is much better than 1mm too small. Hope that helps.

    • @gotstyledesigns
      @gotstyledesigns 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tool in this particular video is used only to split, or make thinner in the thickness of the lace. You would need a cutter which has a blade sitting at 90 degrees. Y-knot makes a cutter/beveler that might work. Their video only shows the beveling process. I have a video on How to Bevel Leather Lace... While I only show the beveling process, I think you could see how the blade would work at 90 degrees. If your lace is already cut but has wavy edges you could probably put through the cutter on both sides. You would probably end up with more narrow lace though. At least it would look nicer though. Hope that helps. Several other companies make string cutters also.

    • @gotstyledesigns
      @gotstyledesigns 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have my core and strands attached to something solid but I found if when braiding you pull too much toward you that the core cord will more easily show. I have the core attached to something closer to me and when I braid I pull to tighten just a little more sideways (like maybe 70 degrees) instead of towards me and the other end of the core. After pulling to tighten I usually am holding on to where I just tightened while making the next step so it did not loosen, but you could not see in the video if I did that. Hope that makes sense. It was hard to make the video and keep my fingers out of the way so you could see how it was braided.

    Hi Pat! I just subscribed to your channel and I like your way of teaching. I need your advice, please. I am going to double whip stitch a purse edge on buffalo leather. I've been going to Tandy Leather for advice and unfortunately, due to covid, they are understaffed and not offering classes. This is my first leather project, but, I have sewn before and have a pretty good idea of what I'm doing, except I don't have to worry about seams!!! I'm using the Tandy 4 hole punch and am punching my leather like you do in this video. I haven't even gone around the edge of the purse flap yet and the four punches are dull. Is there a better brand of hole punch where the punches are of better quality and stay sharp longer? I would really appreciate your advice since you really make gorgeous projects and I am new.

    • @gotstyledesigns
      @gotstyledesigns 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are saying 4 hole punch...do you mean chisel punch? What are you using under your leather for the punch to go into? A chisel punch should not dull for quite a few projects. Normally the problem comes from punching into something not made for that purpose. I found the plastic sheet made for that which you can see sitting on top of my self healing cutting mat, but also the white poly cutting boards you can find at Walmart work. Do not use the gridded surface you use for cutting out your project like the self healing mats or anything harder. If you don't have the correct backing you could for now use a thick piece of leather. You can resharpen by holding at the same angle as they were sharpened at in the first place and running them over the same strop you would sharpen a swivel knife with. They make higher quality chisel punches but I just bought the higher quality Tandy punches and they have worked fine. Hope that answers your question.

    • @ktgodwin100
      @ktgodwin100 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gotstyledesigns Hi again Pat! I guess it depends on which Tandy one goes to...one Tandy told me to use the four hole punch so I bought one. it is absolutelely worthless for whip stitching. Again, this is not Tandy's fault - it's the covid crap going around and the stores being EXTREMELY understaffed, so please know I am not attacking Tandy leather...I love going there. Anyway, I went to another Tandy (and thank God it's about an hour closer to my Colorado country home) and they have a new store manager - they didn't have one the first few times I went in and had one man/woman crews and they didn't have the time to help me so I've made MANY mistakes that luckily I can work around because I used to sew and know there is always a way to fix a mistake!!) and James, the manger, is very good. He told me if I'm whip stitching there is no way the four hole punch would work because it's not even the same shape as the 1/8" kangaroo leather lace I ordered (and Tandy doesn't carry 'roo lace because it is cost prohibitive for them). He set me up with the " Pro Chisel 4 prong 1/8" which went through my leather BEAUTIFULLY...so, having the right tool and not being sold the wrong tool because a lot of the Tandy employees haven't done enough leather work to know better (and this is ok, they are learning just like me) Is EXTREMELY important. I am going to double whip stitch like you mentioned in this video with dark brown and saddle tan on my buffalo purse because it will be gorgeous AND hide my mistakes on the edge of my purse flap that I made not knowing what the heck I was doing when I first started. Here is my question for you. 1. How much lacing at most should I use. The amount of lace I need to go around my purse flap is 33" times 3, which is 99" plus the extra you recommend. That is a lot of lacing to manage. I had seen a video before I found you by Kevin at Weaver Leather and he said never use more than 18 inches at a time and then I need to skiv and glue a new piece to the piece I've just laced to keep going. Please advise me. What do you do? How much lace do you work with at one time before you use another piece? How do you put the pieces of lace together so you can continue lacing? By the way, I made my coconut oil conditioner soap (your recipe and thank you so much!!!) and am going to use it on my laces, but I know the double lacing will be tough to get through after I've laced the first color. Please help me. I value your opinion very much and am going to learn from you.

    • @gotstyledesigns
      @gotstyledesigns 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only use 2 feet to 30 inches max at a time. Do not pull on the end to tighten or even pull on the same place every time. I would never put 99" on a needle. The joining method is in my videos. You skive the ends and use superglue to attach. Let it sit for a while to cure before continuing lacing. I have never had one come apart. Make the join fall on the inside of your work. I use Loctite gel superglue. You squeeze the side of the bottle and never have to touch it. At least you have the right tools now. Glad you like my coconut oil soap video and recipe.

Since my 'roo lace is 1/8" and you suggested it lays flatter and looks better if I use 3/32" lace for double whip stitching. what type of lacing at Tandy should I get and use? Glad you liked the video! Yes, I think you could use it. I always try the edge and material out first. I would cut a scrap piece to the same curve as your coaster and see how the braid looks on it. Use a polished hammer to tap the edges down and that should get rid of any curl from braiding.

  • @orion7741
    @orion7741 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would not recommend using super glue for splicing lace. I say that because it is not flexible and does become brittle over time and will lose its adhesion. for splicing lace, the best adhesive to use is contact cement. The Barge brand is the gold standard and is the longest lasting. in regards to splicing mulitple pieces of laces instead of just using one long strand, the least amount of splices the better. with any type of braiding, the leather strands or lacing MUST be prestretched. That will eliminate any stretching that might happen as you explained with one long piece of lace. The more splices you use just gives more spots that might end up looking unsightly some day as the piece gets wear and tear. the splices will become frayed and be pretty ugly.

    Thanks for leading me down this road. I have a couple questions...At the corner, if the holes don't line up so the hole is in the corner, how is that done? Does there have to be a corner hole? Also, with a gusset, how do you do the start at the top?

    • @gotstyledesigns
      @gotstyledesigns 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should be close enough to the corner to not be noticeable even if it is not exactly in the corner. Most of my corners are fairly rounded and you can move your holes to come out close. It would depend on what the gusset looked like but I would just start a little off center or start somewhere else that might be easier to join if it is a narrow space...such as on a straight run. I would not try to join at a corner.

    Pat, you’re a great teacher! You helped me master the Mexican Round Braid! I have a question I hope that you’ll respond. Where did you but the small wing divider with sharp tips? I would really like to have a pair like that. Thanks so much!

      Thank you so much Herlinda. I got them from a vendor at the leather show in Sheridan some years ago. I see Weaver has some but the smallest is 8 inches.

    Hi Pat, what’s the sequence for going around a corner, in regards to braiding through the corner hole more than once? Cheers

      I think you mean the leather thickness gauge? Those are available from Tandy Leather, Weaver Leather, Springfield Leather, and other places that handle leather and leather tools. Thank you so much on the video!

    Great video, thank you so much. I’m gonna have to watch it a few more times to get it down, I would like to wrap keychain fobs, just store bought regular ones, there are 27 holes around, how many from the first hole should I start to get the best effect all the way around? Please n thank you. P.S I Love Your Nails.

    • @gotstyledesigns
      @gotstyledesigns 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it was helpful! Not sure what you mean by the first hole but I would start in the middle of the flattest spot you have. You would not want to start on a sharper curve since it would be more difficult to join there. Thanks on my nails. LOL

      @@gotstyledesigns thank you. I watched your video again an I think I understand it a better. I see I can start from the first hole an go all the way around. It just threw me because in the video you start lacing from a few holes down an not at the very first hole. Got it now. Gonna subscribe I see you have a couple more braiding Techniques I would like to learn.

    Great instructions. Why do you need the cord in the middle of your braid? I have an old braided whip that needs repair but I believe it has about 10 strands or more leather. I just haven't figured it out yet.

    • @gotstyledesigns
      @gotstyledesigns 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cord just keeps the braid more round. You don't have to use it but sometimes you can get a flatter looking braid rather than the consistent round shape you want.
