Diving - North Wall Corner - 27 Sept 2024
It was a public holiday in Melbourne, the sun was finally shining and all the divers came out to play!
This was meant to be a dive on the wreck 'Eliza Ramsden', which is in a shipping lane in Port Phillip Bay. Alas, there was shipping, so we headed off to 'North Wall Corner' instead, just inside the Port Phillip Bay heads.
A great dive (and when the water's clear - it's spectacular!)
Water was a little green/murky, so close-up shots instead. (I was undecided whether to post this movie - but here it is!)
An old cuttlefish at 01:10, and the usual suspects. (and if you blink at 04:04, you might miss the blue devil!
Water temp 14 Deg C, viz 6 metres, depth b/w 15 - 25 metres, dive time 38 mins.
Dived with Scubabo - Thanks guys!

Matera - Italy

We spent five weeks in southern Italy in May/June 2024. Spent a couple of days in Matera, on the geographic instep of the country’s famed boot. In a word - wow! This place dates back to the Paleolithic era - 10,000 BC and is a UNESCO World Heritage listed site. The tourism industry hasn't quite caught on to this part of Italy - yet. But it will.... So if you're planning on going to Italy, do yo...

We spent five weeks in southern Italy in May/June 2024. Had a few days on the Amalfi coast, taking in the spectacular scenery, the villages, the history, some amazing walks - and an Aperol Spritz or two. Of course, we visited Positano for a day. A beautiful village, but overrun with tourists - and tourist shops. Anyway, here’s some of the drone footage of Positano. Enjoy in 4K!

Headed out for an early (6:30am) dive at Flinders Pier, Victoria. 1 April 2024 - Easter Monday. And what an amazing dive! Plenty of weedy sea dragons and other marine life - even a decent sized ray (and a fishing rod!) Filmed on a GoPro 11 with a bit of lighting. Also fitted the Backscatter macro lens to the GoPro, to capture some sea dragon close ups - (02:28, 03:13, 04:06, 05:05, 05:51 and 06...
Diving - Castle Rock 29 March 2024
มุมมอง 2616 หลายเดือนก่อน
An early morning start from Portsea, to go diving at Castle Rock, just outside Port Phillip Bay, Victoria. Dived with Chimney Rock Charters - thanks Neale! Castle Rock is a large, circular rock formation in 18 metres. The top of the rock is at 12 metres, Called 'Castle Rock' because of the naturally formed 'turrets' around the top. Plenty of underhangs, gullies, etc. Water temp was 20 deg C, but...
Diving Rye Pier - 21 Feb 2024
มุมมอง 1K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Up before sunrise for an early morning, mid-week dive at Rye Pier. A pleasant cruise around the pylons under the pier, then out to an octopus reef. (this wasn't the usual 'Elsa's Reef', but a smaller version, following the metal stakes at the far end of the pier arm). Then back to the pier. The pier's 'topside' was closed for maintenance, so it meant the long wade out to the deeper end - and th...
Diving the J5 Submarine - Jan 2024
มุมมอง 6068 หลายเดือนก่อน
The J5 Submarine is popularly known as the Yellow Submarine, due to its coverage in part by yellow zoanthids. She sits upright on a sandy bottom in 36 metres of water. The J5 was first commissioned in the Royal Navy (UK) in 1916. In 1924, it was sold to a Melbourne salvage company. The hull was sunk off Barwon Heads in June 1926, and is now a dive site! We headed out to the J5 with Chimney Rock...
Diving - Popes Eye 14 Jan 2024

Popes Eye is in middle of Port Phillip Bay. It's a cracker little dive, usually overlooked by experienced divers. (We were meant to be doing a deeper dive (a sub at 36 metres), but conditions were not favorable, so it was off to Popes Eye!) Dived with Bay City Scuba - thanks guys ! Depth 12 metres, dive time 46 mins, water temp 19 deg. Filmed in 4K on a GoPro 11. (and a big thanks to Tent Lucas...

A pleasant Sunday morning dive at Boarfish Reef, just inside Port Phillip Heads, Victoria. A great dive site, with lots of underhangs, gulleys and crevasses to explore. Found a 4 metre long Admiralty anchor (at 05:00) along the reef. Plenty of fish - the usual bunch. Dived with Scubabo. Average depth - 16 metres, water temp - 17 deg C, Visibility around 15 metres (not too shabby!) with a dive t...

Nice video Colin. I did see you guys above us, but didn’t know it was you. Better viz than I expected. Thanks for including the great ocean divers in your clip.
Awesome video!
Lovely! Thanks Colin - looks like you still had a great time.
@skillmeup53 Thanks! It's always a good time!
Gosh, I had forgotten how nice it can be down there. I dived Linely Point / Fisherman's Bay (further down from you) some years back at the end of summer. It was a late afternoon dive and just magic.
Fabulous. Those that don't dive won't realize how the colours come to life when a light source hits objects. What's the average depth at that pier? well done
@matthewparker4101 Thanks Marr. Around 3- 4 metres. 5 metres at the end...
What are the fish species species names
Can you eat them
@dougcharles5004 they're pretty inedible, even though some people think/act otherwise. There's very little meat, all gristle and apparently it tastes horrible.
Nice, haven’t dived a pier for years.
good job
thanks!

in the 60s there were still grey nurse off sorrento and portsea now no.more
Brilliant video. Grew up along all the beaches from St Kilda, to Frankston. Saw the odd blue ring and tiny crabs, but collection of shellfish, muscles, bi valves of any sort, decimated wildlife. I had no idea that so much more is out there. It was 50 years ago though. More aware now. It's helping a lot, that these videos are helping so much, too.😊
Are they protected? This is the first time i have heard of this and ive been going to Rye since the early 70’s .This is just marvellous, would love to see this myself and my kids.thnx for sharing.
Hi Muzza. Well, they're not exactly protected. You can't catch/collect them in water less than two metres deep, and you can only use legal fishing gear. There is also a catch limit of 15 crabs at any one time (i.e . you can't catch 15, put them in your car, then go and get 15 more!) That said, they're pretty inedible - apparently there's no meat in the body and very little in the legs - and I'm told they taste horrible. Much better to just sit back and watch! Cheers! CG
I last dived in 2003, Temperate diving is amazing. Great to see your dive spots and good fish life thanks for sharing.
Nice video - lovely dive.
@@christinetim thanks!
Amazing video! I'll take my daughter there end of the year!
I'm sure she'd love it!
I was free diving for scallops off Safety Beach and came across a huge school of these crabs. I spent a good 30mins just watching them. I have dived a fair bit, and this was one of the best experiences I have had in the water.
Yeah, its pretty amazing. They caught me by surprise too. (I almost left my camera in the car that day, thinking, 'ah, it's only Rye Pier, I've done it before...)
Hey, thanks, Colin! This is an excellent video of the pier underwater. I was impressed that you managed to find a seahorse or two. These days I'm in South Africa and too far from the sea, but when I make it back to Australia I'll definitely try to dive the pier again. Cheers, and thank you.
Thanks! I just slowly cruise around with the camera and let the underwater stuff happen! Let me know when you're back in Aus - might even join you under the pier!
Great film work
How long does this migration last as it past through Sorrento?
they were gone just one week later. They appear at Rye Pier or sometimes Bairgowrie, then go again. This year, they were about one month earlier than usual.
Nice I keep tracking them. Thanks
Great video! Do you know if they're still congregating at the pier? Was the visibility good enough to see them snorkling? Thanks
Hi. they usually hang around for about 2 weeks-ish. (this is the first week). You can see them from the pier/snorkelling if the water is clear (and that can be hit & miss). Best way is to check on the day. There are Facebook groups called 'Scuba Dive Melbourne' and 'DiveLine Scuba' called or similar, that have regular updates on the crabs. Good luck! C
Amazing, thank you!
Another Colin Grant banger
thanks! Only took a cast of thousands...!!
Beautiful video. Thanks for posting.
thanks! glad you enjoyed it.
Wonderful. Thanks for sharing. Mam and Hilda and the Aunties
Unfortunately, I will never return to Flinders Pier again in my life. I refuse to pay parking for a town that has one shop that’s worth visiting.
Yup. And I'm tipping the rest of the Peninsula car parks will all be Fee based before too long. Greedy council. Good thing we have the dives on video, huh?
Cool!
Great footage of the weedy sea dragons
Great footage and sound track !!!
thanks. I wondered about The Doobies, but then thought 'what the heck'!
Good video mate, so cool!
thanks. I just point the camera. The weedies are the stars!
Looks great Colin! My club is diving there on Monday but I’m not joining. This video is making me regret that decision.
Bugger! It might be raining on Monday... And there's always another day....
Great video mate, well done. I wonder if you’d be happy to share the details of your dive lights. They are awesome.
th-cam.com/video/Y3H-D-7qx10/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Sure. I use 2 x BigBlue 'Black Molly III' AL2600XWP 2600 lumen lights. Got them from Adreno. They're mounted on flexible arms, attached to a camera tray. I'll try and send a photo...
sorry, not sure the earlier link was.
Thankyou
Awesome video Colin. Was a great dive
thanks! feel free to share , copy, etc.. Cheers
Another great video and looks like it was a fun dive. I’m hoping to dive castle rock tomorrow - first time for me ! Jeff
Thanks Jeff. I just hold the camera. The fish know what to do... Enjoy your dive!
Been watching your videos for a while now. Started my Open Water last week and we did Rye Pier. Such a cool little dive in our backyard.
Thanks BJ - and welcome to my world!!
Nice!
Thanks! Well worth getting up early for!
Amazing conditions! Great video
Hi Colin, can you share the directions on how to get to this spot. Last year I followed the steel rods in the sand heading north from the end of the pier. Went what felt like a decent distance but found nothing, then turned around and headed back in. Was I heading the right direction?
Hi Carl. Seems you were heading in the right direction if you followed the steel rods. Compass work is essential, cos the sea grass can be confusing re directions...
Thanks Colin. I’ll head out further next time.
Cool video
Thanks! I must get over to dive in your neck of the woods one day...
where's the snappers ?
the snappers arrive in October at Mornington. This was September.
Very cool!
Nice footage thank you.
fantastic videos mate
Glad you like them!
Hey Colin, is there a spot you'd recommend around the peninsula with the highest chances of spotting a weedy sea dragon?
Hi Tim. portsea pier always has a few weedies down near the end of the pier. Haven't done Flinders Pier for some time, but I'm hearing good things recently about the weedy numbers there. Cheers - Colin
Thanks so much! Will check it out. How deep are Portsea Pier and Flinder Pier near the end? Do-able with a snorkel & freedive? Enjoyed the videos btw, nice to see the area here underwater!
@@stibba93 Portsea Pier and Flinders are around 4-5 metres at the end. Flinders is probably better for snorkelling for weedies - there are usually more there, and are all along (under) the pier - near the entry points. Low tide might be your best bet, as the water is 1 metre shallower then!
Thanks so much! Great advice
Just dived it for the first time. We had lower visibility but it was great.
Wonderful video Colin - I enjoyed the dive with you - a lot fewer sharks then I saw in your south west rocks dives 😳. Jeff
the bay is perfect flat. Blue devils looking marvelous. well-done.
thanks Matt. When are you coming diving?
What school of fish is that end of the pier?
They were Blue Mackerel, also known as Slimy, Common or Pacific Mackerel, a cooler water fish. Thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed the acoustic guitar in the middle. Thanks!
Thanks! And a shout out to guitar maestro, Tommy Emmanuel!
Well done! Great video 😀🤙🏼
thanks! it was one of those days...
I did my qualifying ocean SCUBA dive not far from there on the 5th April 1960. I was 14 years old, now 77. I’ve been diving under the Mornington pier many times and I also thank you for the memories. My Grandmother lived in Mornington and ran a Habidashery shop down towards the bottom end of Main Street. I used to go there for holidays every year from age 8 and have memories of Mornington that are priceless. Your footage is a bit like a big aquarium really.
I'm always up for a dive buddy, if you're still keen!
