Best Practices For Caregiving: Top 4 Mistakes To Avoid With A Parent With Dementia
Here are 4 things not to do if your parent or spouse has dementia, along with brief explanations:
1. Don’t Argue or Try to Correct Them
Why: Dementia affects memory, reasoning, and perception. Arguing can cause frustration and escalate tension.
What to Do Instead: Redirect the conversation gently or validate their feelings without focusing on factual accuracy.
2. Don’t Overwhelm Them with Choices
Why: Too many options can be confusing and stressful for someone with dementia.
What to Do Instead: Offer simple, clear choices, such as “Would you like coffee or tea?” rather than “What would you like to drink?”
3. Don’t Assume They’re Doing It on Purpose
Why: Dementia-related behaviors, such as repeating questions or forgetting names, are symptoms of their condition-not deliberate actions.
What to Do Instead: Respond with patience and empathy. Adjust your expectations to their abilities.
4. Don’t Ignore Safety Concerns
Why: Dementia can impair judgment, making everyday activities like cooking or driving dangerous.
What to Do Instead: Assess their environment for risks, such as removing tripping hazards or monitoring medication use. Take proactive steps to ensure their safety.
By focusing on understanding and compassion, you can create a supportive environment that helps your loved one live with greater comfort and dignity.

Yes. This kind of empathy must come from the heart.
As a professional caregiver, the live in care rate is $225 (it was $160 before the pandemic) for 16 hours of care, I get two days off a week, and I am available at night every four hours for toileting the patient. So….
I thought you were going to do a spit take at the beginning LOL!! Always appreciate your videos. Thanks!

Great info David! Thank you!!!
I’ve seen young people do many of these things. So I guess everyone can forget things.
I’ve forgotten names of relatives and thought they were complete strangers. I’ve discussed this with loved ones and was dismissed.
Great topic and SO TRUE!
Thank you for your video. We noticed these things with our loved one, along with giving in to scam phone calls.
Thank you for your post.

I have 5 children. None of who I expect to care for me when that time comes. Here in Canada we can opt for MAID. Caring for someone is really hard, mentally and physically taxing. You put your life and sanity on hold. I've been cooking and cleaning and caring for people for over 50 years.. Sigh.......

So many romanticize aging, while others worship money. Very few people have a realistic view of it all. Most end up being a burden to someone.
Thanks so much for you videos. You give a lot of valuable, useful information.

Awesome videos David! Glad to have you in our community helping people out.
very nice
It does not consider the stress of having the responsibility. I cared at home and it was only me and a CNA but I never could escape care giving and it wore on my mental health. Some times a home is what a caregivers mental health needs. Don’t feel guilty if you need the space from caregiving.
Great info David 😊

It seems as though the only people who recognize dementia are on YT when they should be sharing their wisdom with hospitals and other medical professionals because they're not getting it done.
My psychiatrist looked me straight in my eyes and said if you have Alzheimer’s I will not know it. Someone else will be asking the doctors opinion. A little scary but I also feel relieved that if my normal activities are going wrong someone in my family can get me some help.
Good luck with your channel

Thank you , my husband is 75 and was diagnosed with dementia a year ago , and yes it was his driving that caught my attention from as three years ago , of course now he is not allowed to drive since been diagnosed, every day is quite a challenge and I am noticing on a daily basis ,new memory problems are arising from very simple things that he has to do is becoming a challenge for him and he gets so frustrated and quite angry at times especially when I am trying to help him , Thank you so much for the valuable info 🙏🏻💙

I forgot why I’m here?
My ex is suffering from dementia at 73. My daughter and her special needs son live with me, just the three of us, and every time I forget to turn something off, or can't find my keys, or have to search a little to remember a name or an infrequently used word, I can see that look on her face that seems to ssy, "not you too." I am so tempted when she forgets to turn something off or can't find something to roll my eyes and say, "uhoh." No, I seriously do not worry about me having dementia, but I will be 75 this year and have normal moments of inattention, maybe daydreaming, maybe preferring my own company. I would like to ask everyone making tbese invaluable videos helping family members to recognize warning signs that they need to remember these can be signs of normal aging, unless they become extreme. Tracking your older parent's every mistake and judging them constantly is not only annoying to them. It is demoralizing and ultimately harmful to their confidence, self esteem, and self worth.
I had to add that you do a remarkable job of explaining all the things caregivers need to know but have a very hard time finding out. Thank you for investing your time and energy in helping those of us seeking information and assistance. It can be very lonely out here.
A surefire sign of declining cognitive function is incontinence, especially at night. The mentally confused person may forget how to navigate efficiently to the nearest toilet. Be prepared to do lots more laundry if you are caring for an elderly person who is cognitively compromised. 🧺
Interesting, these countries like Japan, Sweden, Norway etc... has the highest life span, Japan is 83 years old/ But then they also have the most Alzheimer and Dementia ! Longer to live, the more chance to have these mental illnesses!
So glad you were able to have that special moment with your grandmother. Thanks for sharing!
My mom kept hearing sounds at night, thinking the radio was left on. She was soon diagnosed with dementia
Huh. Can't remember what I was going to say. 🤷♂️

Thanks I appreciate the feedback, I’m glad it helps.
The worst elderly driving is that they confused the brake and the accelerator. It's a deadly confusion from the other people driving
My Mother still drove a 4-speed stick when she was 85. She could still drive well and actually renewed her license @ 98, but since we eventually went everywhere together, I usually drove.
