Incredible Advances in OLED Technology
the audio for this video was generated by Google's new "Notebook LM" an AI capability that can use a technical paper to generate a conversation in understandable everyday language to explain the ideas and implications of for the future of newly invented and/or innovations in existing technologies.
The basis for this conversation is the newly released "Positive-feedback organic light-emitting diodes and upconverters" paper in Nature Photonics ( 13 Sept. www.nature.com/articles/s41566-024-01520-0 ).
Authors: Noel C. Giebink; Raju Lampa; Jon-Paul S. DesOrmeaux; Adrian Pizano; Alex Grede; Urcan Guler; John W. Hamer
--Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are among the most successful
organic electronic devices so far. They currently dominate the mobile
display market and are expanding into a broad range of lighting, automotive
and wearable device applications. Here we introduce a new class of organic
light-emitting device that exhibits bistability owing to positive photonic
feedback between an organic photodiode and a tandem OLED integrated
in the same layer stack. These unusual devices display giant hysteresis in
both their current and light emission, and respond sensitively to low-level
external illumination, enabling optoelectronic upconversion with 100-fold
photon-to-photon gain. Given their compatibility with existing OLED
materials and manufacturing lines, these devices could find near-term
use in new types of display and upconversion imaging applications, as
well as offer a new platform for neuromorphic optoelectronics and image
recognition.--

(an audio conversation in easily understood question & answer style created by Google's "Notebook LM") The article "Positive-feedback organic light-emitting diodes and upconverters" details a new type of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) that exhibits bistability due to positive photonic feedback. This bistability allows for giant hysteresis in current and light emission, leading to highly se...

Landscape Sculpted Painting

Folded paper sculpted painting I made early on. I made it as a mockup for a very large piece that I never got to build. Recently, I scanned it with a 3D scanner and took that OBJ into Blender 3D software where I could "light it" and put it into a 3D environment (HDRI in the round). I found an HDRI of a gymnasium and scaled the landscape up to the size I'd originally envisioned. Next I'll see wh...

I 3D scanned a folded paper landscape painting I made early on. I've always wanted to build it at large scale and by putting the 3D object in Blender 3D I could light it and give it an HDRI environment. I animated a camera to look at it. How amazing for the tech to arrive the piece I always wished it could be (well not in a gymnasium but maybe I'll learn how to make a HDRI environmental image o...
Self-Portrait Sculpted Painting (60fps)

A higher resolution version of the video I uploaded earlier (30fps & lower resolution codec). This is 60fps and source is uncompressed quicktime animation codec. I scanned an early work of mine with the Einstar scanner and saved an OBJ file with I loaded into Blender 4.2 in order to setup a simple "room" and lighting. I made a TGA frame animation and now have experimented with a variety of vide...

the latest version of the scanned original then OBJ file imported into Blender 4.2. Simple environment with lighting. I animated a camera to look at the piece and encoded that to video. I made this piece at the beginning of my life as a working artist. I still like it... it's a manageable piece to scan and that said, I'm aimed doing the same with my really large works.

a test to see how well my scanner works handling this piece I did quite a long time ago. It's totally accurate. This video is a screen movie made in the working environment of the scanner. Next, I'll put it in Blender and do lighting

I made this video in order to compare the 3D scan object (made with Einstar) which I animated in Blender with the real world sculpture as seen by a camera. I'm amazed at how accurate the scan OBJ file is.

I scanned a folded paper painting that I made quite a long time ago with an Einstar scanner then dropped the OBJ file I made with its ExStar software into Blender 4.2. I lit the model then made a camera animation and converted that into a video file (which I what you see here)

a more complete version of the Einstar 3D scan I made of a folded paper sculpture I made quite a few years ago. Imported into Blender 4.2 (LTS) and lit within Blender... and a camera animation made to look at it. This is a more complete version though there are still visible holes in the 3D mesh that I need to address.

Scanned original folded paper sculpture; imported that into Blender; created a scene with lighting; animated a camera to look at it; exported animation to a mp4 video file (this)
