Creating a ceiling-mounted lighting family in Revit involves several steps. Here's a basic guide to help you through the process:
Step 1: Start a New Family
Open Revit and go to the File menu.
Select New Family.
In the New Family dialog, choose a template that suits your need. For a ceiling-mounted light, select Lighting Fixture Ceiling Based.rft. This template ensures that your light will attach to the ceiling.
Step 2: Set Up Reference Planes and Parameters
Reference Planes: Use reference planes to define the boundaries and centerlines for your light fixture. Ensure that these planes are well-dimensioned to help with the placement of the light fixture components.
Parameters: Create parameters to control the dimensions and other properties of the light fixture (e.g., width, depth, height, and material). Parameters can be Type or Instance depending on whether you want to control them at the family type level or instance level.
Step 3: Create the Light Fixture Geometry
Extrusions: Use the Extrusion tool to create the body of the light fixture. Sketch the shape on the appropriate reference plane (typically, the ceiling or a plane offset from the ceiling).
Sweeps, Revolves, and Blends: These tools can be used to create more complex shapes if needed. For example, you might use a sweep to create a decorative edge or a revolve for a cylindrical light fixture.
Position the Fixture: Align and lock the geometry to the reference planes to ensure it will adjust correctly when parameters are changed.
Step 4: Add Light Source
Go to the Create tab, select Light Source from the Lighting panel.
Place the light source within the fixture geometry, ensuring it is appropriately located. You can adjust the light source properties e.g., light distribution, color, and intensity under the Family Types dialog.
If you want to use an IES file to define the light distribution, you can load it into the family and assign it to the light source.
Step 5: Add Connectors
Electrical Connector: If your light fixture needs to be connected to a circuit, add an Electrical Connector. Go to the Create tab, and under Connector, choose Electrical Connector. Place it on the fixture where the wiring would connect.
Set the electrical connector's parameters, such as voltage and load classification.
Step 6: Save and Load into Project
Save your family by going to File Save As Family. Give it a descriptive name.
Load the family into a project by selecting Load into Project from the ribbon.
In the project, you can place the light fixture by going to the Architecture or Systems tab, selecting Component, and placing the light fixture on the ceiling.
Step 7: Test and Adjust
Place the fixture in a project and adjust its parameters to see if it behaves as expected.
Check the light distribution by rendering a view or using the Lighting Analysis tools.
Make any necessary adjustments to the family
