Ultimate 4WD Tyre Guide: HT vs AT vs MT – Find the Best Tyres for Off-Road Adventures
All-Terrain (AT) Tyres - Versatility for Both On- and Off-Road Adventures
All-Terrain (AT) tyres offer a versatile option for those who split their driving time between highways and off-road trails. These tyres are designed to handle a wide range of surfaces, including bitumen, gravel, sand, and light mud. AT tyres have a more aggressive tread pattern than HT tyres, providing better traction on unsealed roads and off-road trails, without compromising too much on-road comfort and fuel efficiency.
However, because they are designed to handle both on-road and off-road driving, AT tyres may not perform as well as dedicated HT tyres on highways, or as MT tyres in extreme off-road conditions. They are the perfect balance for weekend adventurers who need one tyre to cover all their bases.
Here are three of the best-rated AT tyres for Australian drivers:
BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2
Falken Wildpeak A/T3W
Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure with Kevlar
Mud-Terrain (MT) Tyres - Unrivalled Off-Road Performance
If you’re tackling extreme off-road conditions like deep mud, rocky trails, and sand dunes, Mud-Terrain (MT) tyres are your go-to option. These tyres feature large, aggressive tread blocks designed to provide maximum traction in soft, loose surfaces. MT tyres are built tough, with reinforced sidewalls to withstand punctures from sharp rocks and debris.
However, MT tyres come with trade-offs. They are noisier on highways, wear down faster on sealed roads, and can reduce your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Despite these drawbacks, MT tyres are unbeatable for off-road performance, making them a top choice for serious 4WD enthusiasts.
Here are three of the top-rated MT tyres for Australian conditions:
Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar
BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3
Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ P3
Key Considerations: Load Range and Speed Rating
Before deciding on which tyres to invest in, you’ll want to consider both the load range and speed rating of your tyres. These factors are crucial, especially if you frequently carry heavy loads or tow trailers.
Load Range: The load range rating tells you how much weight your tyres can safely carry. If you’re towing a caravan, carrying heavy gear, or regularly loading your vehicle with equipment, you’ll want tyres with a higher load rating. The extra strength in these tyres helps them handle the increased stress, especially on uneven off-road surfaces.
Speed Rating: The speed rating indicates the maximum speed your tyres can handle safely. It’s especially important for drivers who transition from off-road adventures back to highways. Off-road tyres generally have lower speed ratings because they’re designed for rugged durability, not high-speed driving. For example, a tyre with a Q speed rating is built for speeds up to 160 km/h, which is suitable for most off-road and highway situations.
Example: The BFGoodrich KO2, a popular all-terrain tyre, has a load range of E and a speed rating of Q, meaning it can handle heavy loads but isn’t designed for very high-speed driving. Always check your tyre’s specifications to ensure they match your vehicle’s capabilities and your driving habits.
Research and Making an Informed Choice
While this guide provides a solid starting point, it's important to remember that the best tyre for your 4WD depends on your unique driving style, terrain, and needs. The tyres we've recommended are some of the most highly rated by Australian off-roaders, but always take the time to do your own research. Read reviews, consult tyre professionals, and consider factors like climate, terrain, and load requirements. A tyre that works brilliantly in one situation might not be ideal in another, so customising your decision to your needs is key.
Conclusion
Choosing the right tyres for your 4WD is critical for ensuring your vehicle performs its best, no matter where you drive. HT tyres are ideal for city and highway driving, offering a smooth, quiet ride with excellent fuel efficiency. AT tyres provide versatility, giving you the freedom to switch between sealed roads and light off-road trails without sacrificing comfort. For extreme off-roaders, MT tyres are designed to conquer deep mud, rocks, and rugged terrain, delivering unrivalled traction and durability.
Before making a purchase, always consider the load range and speed rating of the tyres to ensure they match your vehicle’s requirements and your driving style. And remember, this guide is just the start. Do your own research, consult with experts, and pick the tyres that suit your specific needs and adventures.
If this guide helped you, hit that thumbs up, and be sure to subscribe to The Insight District for more off-roading tips, gear reviews, and expert advice. Let us know in the comments what tyres you’re running on your 4WD and how they’ve held up in your off-road adventures!

Easy and Handy Modification For Rear Ute Drawers
I changed my fuel filter was a bastard to get the lid back on but eventually got it done. However the Ute started up then died and now won’t start and has a wrench on the dash. Yay!
Just following up on this. I’d not 100% connected one of the fuel lines which introduced air into the system. I’ve since fixed my little f@*k up and all is well. The cap is a bastard to twist on but the advice with some lubricant around the O-ring helped and also on the thread.
I have done this on both Ford Ranger/Mazda BT50 2.2 and 3.2 liter diesel engines numerous times and I change the oil filter (which is what Haynes recommends and what I was told they do at the agents). I agree, get everything you need ready, but then do the filter first, before draining the oil from the sump. The oil filter is not directly connected to the sump, so does not affect the oil level in the sump and is therefore not a time sensitive operation. The only oil that leaks out is about a teacup full which is retained in the oil filter housing and for that you simply position a oil tray underneath and use old rags on the cross member to absorb the oil that spills on it (unavoidable). Once the oil filter and O ring has been changed and the housing is back in position and torqued correctly (25Nm) then all you have to focus on is emptying the old oil from the sump, putting back and torquing the sump plug to 39Nm, and then filling up with new oil, which all took less than 7 minutes when I last did it. 5 minutes to drain (which I time - could be less as after 4 minutes its just drops), about 30 seconds to replace and torque the drain plug (fitted a new seal during the 5 minutes) and 2 minutes to pour in the new oil. The only old oil that is retained in the engine is retained in the oil pump and pipes and is needed to retain prime. This is less than 2% of the total oil volume, so has no effect on the efficiency of the new oil.
VERY VERY COOL.
To anyone who ended up here because you have a Mazda BT-50 and they share common parts this is a callout for you. The side mirror on the passenger side has an additional T20 torx screw behind the weather seal on the car door. Pop the weather trim and pull towards the window firmly (it's tucked a bit behind the seal). As an estimate of where it's located - draw a triangle between the bottom bolt (behind the black rubber cover), and the top bolt, with the 3rd point of the triangle being in the weather trim - this is its approximate location. Remove this one as well to take the side mirror out.
Gonna try this on my 2022 ranger lariat hopefully I don’t mess up 💀 gonna use a xlt or a regular version instead tho
Hey mate, just wanted to say your videos have been super helpful lately. Keep up the good work

as e pours it on the ground haha - cheers for the vid - helpflul
Works a charm
2:36 is this really so, ie I must not drain the oil pump otherwise would risk being unable to start the engine? This is critical so can you please confirm, because I want to prepare for this possibility. In other words, if this happens, what to do? Thanks.
probably a bit late but i once let my pump die. you need to buy a new oil pump and make sure it’s a gear driven one. expensive and painful mistake
@ thank you. Late but still very helpful. And a got another good answer to my question: in case you lost the prime of the fuel pump, there is still a way to prime it (inexpensive) without having to replace the pump. Nonetheless, I have successfully done oil change for my Ranger without worrying too much about this and it was eventless,
Thanks mate, great video that will save me some $.
Did you just remove the stereo and climate control panel to get to it ?
How the hell do you do two clips are once?
One of the more helpful videos around. A really common problem easily fixed and the best use of USB drives I have ever seen. Thanks. 😊
worked a treat! finally got around to doing this after watching a few months ago
How did I end up in Australian TH-cam? I don't feel down under! Thanks for posting.
do it myself, but I have been blessed with a friend who is a mechanic and will do it.
Good straightforward informative video. One bit of advice for anyone doing this is test your heater plugs while the manifold is off. Save having to do this all again if you find you have a faulty one.
Good tip!
It worked! 🎉
Glad you got it sorted!
Holy a faarrk an actual video that has correct knowledge and works perfectly, thanks man
No problems at all, glad it worked!
Very informative videos. Thank you for sharing and for your time and effort. Just a point about battery connections. We used to use Vaseline to help with contact and smear it over the terminals and connectors to prevent oxidisation. What you referred to as contact protector.
شكرًا لك👍
Yes this helped thankyou
I have saved the money
Thanks so much i have replaced my side mirror
Not a problem at all!
Very straightforward. I would use a torque wrench on the caliper bolts though.
Yeah, you can never be too careful, especially with brakes!
Yeah I hate that sound

Very good video instruction👍❤️
Thank you! Cheers!
Great vid. Thanks for sharing. Looks like I don't have to jack the car up to be able to drain the oil and redo the sump screw?

Could you replace the filter in place or should you remove it completely like you did in the video

Hi. We followed everything you did on the video and now the car has thrown errors with check 4wd, tcs, abs. As per the video it still has the factory switch installed which we did. Is the factory switch meant to be disconnected. We have since removed it all and still has the errors has anyone else had this problem. Cheers

The association was founded by Paul Chambers. So given you haven't bothered to fact-check your openning statement, perhaps you could share your evidence that the pair conspired to deny funding to other competitors? Or are we just jumping on a trending topic to boost our followership? 😂😂😂
did you comment on the right video?
Thank you 🙂
you are welcome
Should put which model/year this applies to…. Not the 2010 model which is what I’m looking for…
