Giving Dewormer and keeping it Positive
March 24 ,2024
Lacey has had gobs of positive reinforcement training using Apple sauce in syringes to give medicine by mouth. only this Quest dewormer has the most awful taste imaginable and no matter what I have done she catches on and I can't get the full dose into her. This year I'm trying the mix it in feed method. I made a mash with about 3 pounds of hay pellets and low carb forage based feed pellets and added the dewormer. offered it for her first meal of the day. success! I thought she might refuse it and it would be a waste of expensive medicine, however I had to try .
thanks for watching. short update to follow this video 🤠🐎

    Where do you go if your horse rushes back out the trailer (like just run out or try get out from behind the divider)? What if something happens and they want out? Obviously untie first and wait til horse seems calm, but I had a horse panic after we hit a big pothole in the road. I was in a straight load so she rushed out once bbar down but what happens in an angle load? Can you unlatch the divider from outside or from the front? Or is there a safer place to stand if they rush past you?

    • @grannyhorsetraining878

      I would keep them contained until they calm down. That maybe 20 minutes or so for their adrenaline to subside. If you can safely give them some food while they are in the trailer , I would wait until they calm down and start eating before unloading. Like I said, that may take awhile. Never be in a hurry and if your trailer is strong ,which it should be, let them fuss. Keep your energy down. If you get upset ,they will "feed" off your emotions. Keep calm and wait them out. If you're going to travel with your horse, regularly do trailer training sessions so they are really comfortable with loading and unloading. Don't do this training in giant steps. If you go back over my videos on the trailering ,I have many and show how many different sessions I had just to get them calm to drive the trailer to a different part of my farm and unload , let them chill and then reloaded . I literally didn't go more than 2 tenths of a mile with them. This is so important to take it slow over a period of time because everything about a horse trailer terrifies a horse, that's their instinct you have to try and teach them to ignore their instinct.

    love the other horses watching 😂 she’s really sweet. i tell you what, i had no idea i was supposed to do this for my mare. i’ve had her for 5 years. she isn’t as nice a horse as yours, but she does get nasty and sweaty and dirty. i just did it today and my poor horse had so much crusty build up. i bet she’s itched so bad.. i felt terrible. her tail is always nasty too. nobody’s ever said a word to me and i’ve had many people try to train her for me. i just didnt know anything about horses when someone bought her for me. i don’t like bathing mine at all. she seems to hate it too. i will definitely be cleaning her butt up from now on tho. idk why it never occurred to me that she can’t scratch underneath! you’d think as horse owners we’d think about that but most of us just don’t! i genuinely LOVE your approach to caring for your horses. you’re great. 😂😂 she is fat like my horse! my farrier always tells me i need to put her on a dry spot for several hours a day!

      Thanks, I am glad you're learning from my videos. Your Farrier is right. Too fat is bad and it's a constant struggle with Lacey. She is insulin resistant and is not on any grazing. Get your horse tested for insulin resistance. Laminitis and Founder sneaks up if you are not working to prevent it by controlling the diet. Happy trails 🤠

    Hi, i live in western WA and have rescues my newest has hard edema under my mares belly, drainage. Got the vet out, antibiotics, banamine washing her belly. Have u seen it this bad? I tried echo vet spray and it made me cough for days. I put benadryl creme, swat, belly balm on. I will start doing the tail. Any other ideas? Thanks Janice

    • @grannyhorsetraining878
      @grannyhorsetraining878 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Janice, looks like you covered the basics. Swat is best for preventing fly strike on an open wound. I had the exact type of thing happen with a mare years ago, that's why I'm always checking bellies ,udders and cleaning as needed. The udder can accumulate quite a bit of gunk that can cause irritation,draw Flys and get infected. I tried that Belly Balm, I found it did nothing but attract more dirt. After your infection clears and heals up a regular fly spray should work. Cleaning ,drying regularly and applying fresh fly spray. I'm currently mixing up essential oils of Citronella, lemon grass and peppermint with listerine type mint mouthwash, rubbing alcohol and water. It had been working really well this year and non toxic. Then the hear hit and the Flys got bad I had to go back to chemical fly spray for now, doing touch ups with the essential oil spray I made.you can try Manna pro natural force fly spray that's the proportions of essential oils I'm basing my essential oil spray on.

However if you want to get the encysed strongyles you have to use Quest or do a five day power pack of Pancure or Safeguard both of which are not as effective as Quest in one dose. I've been using Quest for years on several different horses and never a problem except that it tastes so bad, they really hate it

    Great information, I've been battling a few issues since moving to a more tropical location here in Australia especially rain scald and sweet itch. I recently found Neem oil and coconut oil in a 1/7 ratio worked wonders ( made is stronger for the inital hit and then lowered to 1/7 for maintenance spray) . It heals up the skin and regrows hair quickly. Creates a barrier and it's the only thing to kill the horse flies the moment they try to bite and it lasts longer than fly spray since the oil makes a barrier. I'm definitely going to add your trick to the arsenal as well, it's always great to have multiple tricks to try and battling such annoying things. The Neem oil also has an anti-inflammatory affect as well which really slows the itching and helps the hair grow back. Thanks for the great video and great information

    Sorry to hear about the problems with your injury. Those little finger breaks are a bummer. Lucky I did not have issues with the insurance. However, I still have a lot of problems with my finger. First it is forever bent to the side. I did not go through therapy, but just every day activities have gotten it back to being flexible again. Although my horse knows she can still pull through the left rein, because that hand is still weak. Second I have a lot of pain in it, but I already had bad arthritis in my hands. Not sure why they have to do another surgery to remove your pins though. They removed the pins from my finger in a regular doctor visit. Even when I had screws removed from a leg a few years ago, they did it in a doctor's office with the help of a mini x-ray machine thing. The advice I would suggest for healing is when you are finally out of the finger cast. When you are doing chores and stuff still keep the broken finger taped to a good finger. But leave the knuckle part unwrapped. That way it can flex, but if you have a horse pull to much on it, the good finger gives it support, so you don't reinjure it again. Good luck and hope it heals soon.

      @@grannyhorsetraining878 that's great, I like your methods of training with her, very light and polite. I adopted a 2 year old fjord x belgian gelding in January originally from the feedlots out west in Canada, he didn't get the nicest start in life or much handling and I'm finding positive reinforcement goes so much better with him than the traditional pressure and release/negative pressure I'm used to. In 2 months he's gone from a horse that backed into corners, reared and struck out to a calm trusting horse that handles new things, experiences, tasks very well and catches on quickly. He follows me around, stands for grooming and tack and I've got him coming to me when I'm on the fence for future mounting, I'd love to teach him to come stand at the mounting block like Lacey does when she comes to pick you up. The best of good luck with your hand, you will be allright again, I'm sure. I did my hand and wrist in decorating some years ago.
