Bearing Failure :Choosing the Right Lubricant, Oil or Grease?
Science and Technology, Environment Science
Bearing Failure: Choosing the Right Lubricant Oil or Grease?
Role of lubricant in Bearing Failure
When failure of bearing is analyzed, role of lubrication is viewed seriously. Choosing the right lubricant-oil or grease-can significantly impact the performance and lifespan of a bearing. Characteristics of oil and grease to be understood deeply before selecting the appropriate lubricant.
1. Characteristics of Oil vs. Grease
Oil:
(1)Oil Offers better cooling due to its ability to flow and dissipate heat.
(2)Create lower friction at high speeds, making it ideal choice where high rotational speeds is existing.
(3)Requires a more sophisticated lubrication system, such as an oil bath, oil mist, or forced circulation piping network.
Grease:
(1)Grease is combination oil with a thickener, which enable it to stay in place and provides a sealing effect against contaminants.
(2)It is easier to apply and maintain, often suitable for systems without complex lubrication setups.
(3)Best for low to moderate speeds and applications where re-lubrication intervals are not frequent.
2. Factors to Consider to Select right Lubricant
a. Operating Conditions of machine
Temperature:
Oil is better for high-temperature applications due to its superior cooling properties.
Grease, especially high-temperature grease, can work in moderate heat ranges but may degrade faster at extreme temperatures.
Speed:
Bearings operating at high speeds benefit from oil as it reduces friction and handles shear forces better.
Grease is suitable for slower-speed applications where continuous re-lubrication is not possible.
b. Load conditions of machine
High-load applications may require oil lubrication as it forms a more robust hydrodynamic film, to avoid metal to metal contact.
Grease can also handle high loads but may require specialized formulations with extreme pressure (EP) additives.
c. Environmental Conditions in which machine is operational
In dirty or wet environments, grease acts as a sealant to prevent contaminants from entering the bearing.
Oil systems may require additional filtration and sealing mechanisms to handle contaminants effectively.
3. Signs of Lubrication Failure
Oil:
Dis -colouring and foaming due to overheating .
Leakage or contamination with dust and water.
Insufficient lubrication due to poor maintenance or improper viscosity.
Grease:
Grease hardening or caking due to aging.
Excessive greasing leads to overheating.
Inadequate re-lubrication causing metal-to-metal contact.
4. Continuously Monitoring Lubricant Condition
Regular analysis of lubricant condition is necessary. For oil, viscosity and contamination levels should be checked.
For grease, monitoring re-lubrication intervals and ensuring proper application that is the key for longevity of bearing.
Over-lubrication (common with grease) and under-lubrication (common with both oil and grease) should be avoided as both lead to premature bearing failure.

There is the same amount of water since the beginning of time. The oceans evaporate and replenish the rivers through snow and rain. Please go get a first-grade education.
Dear sir, If you are so confident that fresh water is going to remain forever on this earth then, why you are so worried about my video content?. My content is based on the environment expert's study carried out on impact of climate change on water bodies on the earth. My content is my opinion, if you are not agreed that is your concern, thanks

Good TH-cam. But when I stop the video, to read, the TH-cam menu appears and overwrites the two bottom lines; that makes it very difficult to read!

Does this work on ocean water? Urine? Orange juice? I love the epic music
This process is usually used to filter ground water or river water to get safe water for domestic drinking purpose. There are are desalination systems which can convert ocean water to drinking water, not affordable for domestic use. Ocean water cleaning technology is available in IS RIAL. Urine need not to be filtered, because, it got some therapeutic use. It can be used to cure some diseases as per Ayurveda
Very informative, saving this for design as a mech undergrad myself
Thank you very much for your decent comment.
It's really helpful
