I've been fishing a 3wt here on the Avalon for over a decade. I've yet to have a problem landing fish quickly or releasing them safely. If i fished bigger water I'd go to 5/6wt.
I think the 5 weight is going to be one of my go to rods for salmon , unless I plan on targeting larger fish ( 10+ lbs ). It’s sure a fine difference between the classic 8 weight , yet still about the same fight duration , even when horsing them in.
@Braydencoish I should add that with the lighter weight gear you want a rod with a stiff butt section. A noodle won't work IMO. Maintaining a low rod angle is also important.
@durritidumange I agree. I opted for an 8’6. You still need the backbone for sure ! I agree.
I used a 6wt on the Torrent in 2022 and it was awesome. BTW, I just started following you and saw you were at my stomping grounds at Black Brook in 2022. Sure enough it was me and my fishing partner down stream from you folks. I had the salmon on. Very cool to see that.
@@FlyFudgeoutdoors wow that’s awesome ! Hopefully we run into eachother again ! Thanks for watching !
Great day out buddy. Lots of action on the 5 wt. Take care buddy. Tight Lines.
@@DarrellWellsDifferentStuff thanks for watching Darrell !
Great video Brayden! It's nice to see you take us on fishing trips throughout NFLD like this! Nice salmon and trout! Looking forward to the Mackerel fishing on the 5wt!

I know we have some vicious winds here in NL, but 5km per second has gotta be a record! 😅
@@RemedyElixir 5km per second ? 5 km SOUTH wind it said 🤣
You can’t beat a 5wt rod and 5wt line for action 👍 I have a 4 piece with the 5-6 wt really nice feeling handling trout or salmon
@@edwinlegrow4401 it’s a great medium between power , & fun ! Plenty strong enough to get em in , but you feel it all ! Thanks for watching !
A lot of fun buddy ! I have never really done any fly fishing not many steam like that close to me , So it's just a little rod & lake tout or big Pike :) Had a little incident so slowed my building progress & can't hold a rod for a few weeks now but hope to get back out soon :)
@@littlegriffoffgridalberta6837 thanks for watching , & best of luck when you get back out !

We had a great time, great laughs and definitely awesome food .We were all strangers before and we left as friends . Awesome trip in my books . Thanks for sharing and all the best buddy
It was a dandy trip ! Thanks for the invite Scott !
Awesome videos you make, really enjoy it! I’m from Quebec and I planning a trip in August in NL and I was wondering what is your go to flies, size and Colors to bring in the field? And best place to buy? Fly tyers or shops Thanks to sharing and tight line 🤙
@@iruoysacul thanks ! Black fly imitations , and mayfly imitations. The smaller the better. The classic “ bomber “ for Atlantic salmon always does well. Thanks for watching !

a great video buddy. Very well put together and I can concur that the food was fantastic and we had a great time. Thanks for all the tips with the fishing and the river. You are a true gentleman and I hope to get on the river with you again sometime soon. Take care buddy.
@@DarrellWellsDifferentStuff we will link up for something again one day Darrell ! Was awesome meeting you & spending a trip. Thanks for watching !
Yes sir now that was a good trip fishing for sure. Ye guys were eating like Kings. Turr and all the veggies cooked up outside. That is the first I seen cooked up outside like that. I be like Darrell wouldn't care about the fishing or anything else if I could get a feed like that. Didn't have turr for few years either. Lucky crowd. Must be great people up there. Ya definitely not a landlock I don’t care where it was caught in nl landlocked aren’t that silver
@@joshharris3943 grand lake … the colour of the fish doesn’t determine the species. There is literally no way for these fish to be sea run … all landlocked , just an extremely healthy fishery my buddy.
I'm always happy when someone else catches a fish, even if it's not me. Especially when they release it too! Gives you a good feeling when you handle 'em right and let them go on their way. Get to meet 'em and see 'em off! 😄
@@RemedyElixir glad to hear that ! Thanks for watching & glad you enjoyed !
