    If the secret agent has theme music, he's no longer a secret. One quibble with the plot: How does Bond know that there are piranha in the koi pond? The kill quip works because we know, but how did he know?

    I worked with George Martin a few times back in the day. Lovely bloke and talented producer and arranger. I do find his score for Live and Let Die a bit flimsy and repetitive though. He shows his lack of experience in the genre as he tends to compose pieces and then fit them in and reuse them rather than compose a continuous evolving score that adapts to every moment and mood change. The stings he uses are sometimes a bit dated and basic and there is an obvious contrast to the quality of John Barry's work. It does have some good moments but is obviously not in the same league as many of the other films. The score isn't the only thing that's flimsy in this film. The set design often looks cheap and the direction is also a bit clunky, old fashioned and lacking dynamism. Apart from the speedboat sequence the film is also lacking in good action set pieces and some of the acting is criminally bad (I'm looking at you Rosie). I think the titles song and voodoo iconography are remembered fondly with this one but on close inspection it is objectively one of the weaker entries in the series.

    This is a great Bond movie and the biggest missed opportunity of the series. This would have been one of the best movies if Sean Connery starred in it. Connery wanted to do a movie like this. It is almost unforgivable that he was not in it. Lazenby did alright but Connery and Diana Rigg together would be gold.

    • @Rhubba
      @Rhubba 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Connery's chance to be perfect for OHMSS would have been right after Thunderball. You Only Live Twice turned the character as played by him into an iconic figure, too worldly, too self-contained and assured. It needed someone who could put more vulnerability into the Bond character.

  • @georgecherucheril9947
    @georgecherucheril9947 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

    On Her Majesty's Secret Service was a great movie but would be one the best if Connery starred in it. Diamonds was the precursor to the Roger Moore era which 1970s audiences wanted. Sean Connery was the first to play Moore's bond in Diamonds.

  • @georgecherucheril9947

    I disagree that this movie was grounded in reality. Far from reality, the movie shows a space arm grab a rocket in outer space really? There is no way Blofeld could launch a rocket from inside a volcano no matter how impressive the set. Why didn't the female villan kill Bond on the boat? Why destroy a perfectly good airplane? Finally there is no way Little Nellie could be weighted down with guns and shoot down planes.

    I see some inconsistencies here. In this vidoe you criticize the poster for fishing for examples to prove a point but then in other videos you do the same. The left lies? Sure. So does the right. Shall we both go looking for examples of the dregs, as you call them? Feels like a very dishonest argument you are trying to make. Does the left get to dismiss their fringe as well? You dismiss the right wing fringe here as not indictive of the whole. Same for the left?

    An interesting, if in places over-intellectualized, analysis. I would expand on a couple of the points made: 1) the series had made a very deliberate choice for spectacle over characterization, to this film's great detriment, and 2) Connery was by this point barely on speaking terms with the producers, largely over money, but also because he had grown tired of the mechanics of fame, as the video notes. The next film (OHMSS) would be much better in terms of quality, but would not make nearly as much money. This in turn led to the mess that was DAF.

    • @Rhubba
      @Rhubba 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Of course my reviews are over-intellectualised! That's the purpose of this series. There are already so many Bond review videos which consist of explaining the plot, what the reviewer likes, what they don't like...this series is about analysing the subtext, putting the movies into the context of when they were made, what other cultural influences were going on and the restrictions of each production. I put the case that the producers not just went for spectacle on You Only Live Twice but that they went as far as they did because they had to stay ahead of all the competition.

    I can understand why Connery became pissed off with EON . The producers were greedy and insisted on churning out Bond movies every year without resting him and then Lazenby comes along with a strong Aussie accent and they cannot give him the time to aquire a convincing English accent . They dubbed him with George Baker's snobbish and annoying voice and the image of Lazenby didn't match the vocals and that is what ruined his 9n screen performance,

    The narration and analysis in this video is ignorant HOGWASH. The writers of the video got it all wrong with all the recurrent characters in the show. The main theme of the entire series was all but missed by this video. Here's what it was: Tremendous irony. Not only was Kimble falsely accused and convicted of a heinous crime that made him into a monster by murdering his wife, in reality he was exactly the opposite. He was a saintly man that lived ONLY to help others in need. Every single episode describes how he helped strangers or saved their lives even though it endangered him by almost getting caught. Although he was adamantly pursuing the one-armed man who killed his wife in order to clear his name, he put the lives of others before his own if need be. In the series, he even saved Gerard's life no less than four times!

    I never thought Donald Pleasence, as great an actor as he was, was very convincing as the villain in this movie. My vote for most convincing villain in any Bond movie is No. 1 in Thunderball: you never see him and he has a voice that seems to come from the grave. All other Bond villains, with the possible exception of Auric Goldfinger, are like cartoons, in my opinion.

    Another unusual feature about the series finale was that it didn't air until late August of '67, months after what would have been the usual end date for season 4 -- letting the fans' anticipation build over the summer -- but still prior to the start of the fall TV schedule, so there was even less competition than usual. That scheduling was part of what made it such a viewing event.

      Katsulas was a fantastic actor and I loved his portrayal of G'Kar in Babylon 5. Raisch was not an actor but a choreographer by profession but he did genuinely have only one arm. Having said that I think Raisch was the better one armed man: For one thing Katsulas' one armed man is a hired hit man working for a bigger villain but Raisch's version is this terrifying, lone and cunning villain. They wrote his character as a completely immoral opportunist which made him scary. He's also very effective at being menacing in the 2 part finale so he gets my vote.
