      you're correct, but theres so much more. real(ish) time collaboration, time saved waiting on renders, easy speaker tests outside/away from the studio/computer. Say you have your studio downstairs but some nice speakers like upstairs or in your car. Now you don't need to wait to render plus theres no external factors messing with the audio like file compression or anything. idk makes sense to me. the one oversight I see, and its a big one; is that we cant start playback from the app. thats becoming annoying LOL

    You don't seem to be getting any gain reduction at those settings (just a tiny blip on the right of the Reduction meter every once in a while) -- could the audible difference be mainly the saturation and not the actual compression? As the Presonus guy explains in this video, you often need to turn up the input gain a bit to get the compression really working. th-cam.com/video/zmkHB6gaPgM/w-d-xo.html

    • @ProgressiveSoundAudio
      @ProgressiveSoundAudio หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi and thanks for watching and commenting. It could well have been, in a Mastering context we really don't want excessive gain reduction so it's not uncommon to only see a small amount here and there. That said though it could well be the saturation that's making most of the audible difference. I may revisit this video as the overall quality of my older video's are not the greatest. Thanks once again for watching.

    Amazing plugin and so glad it's free (and glad I found this video)! I needed it in a pinch - and weirdly I'm happy it includes the ability to send a downgraded quality to my phone - might seem unusual but in my case I'm working on some sound design for a client which they are using on a hotline. They sent me a test number and it's pretty lo-fi, but unfortunately not practical to keep testing the hotline itself for every adjustment in the mix. Being able to downgrade the quality enables me to more closely make adjustments based on what it will (sadly) sound like in the real world. Super helpful as well for prepping mixes which will be viewed on social media etc. Cheers!

      Apologies for the delay in responding. I can't find anything concrete to confirm, however the DDP and CD creation is advertised to Redbook Standard by Presonus so I would have to say yes it does as it's the Redbook standard which stipulates the bit depth and sample rate. Hope this helps.

      For me I tend to look for a DAW that is competent for a Mastering workflow, but also one that balances visual inspiration with a great workflow. Studio One has been a go to for me as it's now in a position with the v6.5 updates where it offers the functionality, but doesn't get in the way of what I want to achieve. Reaper probably has more Mastering 'Functions' but Studio One lets me get the job done easier for the way I like to work.

    Awesome video. Thanks. where I'm struggling right now is mastering 3 songs in one project, 2 of which are acoustic rock songs that I have around -10 LUFS and LRA around 5. The third song is electric and more compressed / less dynamic which is around -10 LUFS but the LRA is around 2.4. How much does the LRA play into the overall sound? Should I be concerned at this level?

    • @ProgressiveSoundAudio
      @ProgressiveSoundAudio 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a great idea question and I’m glad you liked the video. In short the numbers mean very little, they are there as a guide to let you know what’s going on. It’s all about the sound and whether you like the sound or not. The LRA being 2.4, okay so it’s got less dynamic range, but if it’s an in your face rock song it will generally have less dynamics as the intent is to be more upfront. So ultimately don’t be too concerned with the numbers, be more concerned with how the song sounds. Hope that helps 👍

      @MasteringInTheBox Same here. In fact, if you email them, Ollo will send you an Excel spreadsheet for free with your individual measurements against their own specifications (Kemar Diffuse Field, iirc). I then input the deviations into a 31 band (ISO standard, 20hz-20khz, 3.25 Q) graphic eq to 'correct', and... WOW! For analytical listening - the best I've ever used. (I did see the news on their collaboration with Waves - that's what prompted me to 'attempt' to reverse enginner the service they offer)

      @MasteringInTheBox Indeed. Definitely a company to watch. I believe they are also working on a new product to rival the Subpac that would be interesting to try, especially if there is 1 month trial available. 😉

    Great review Smudge. I’m using mid range, price wise, headphones at the moment, but would consider Olli Audio 5X if I am ever in the market for an upgrade.

    Good infos here, I can understand the points you're making. 1. This feature doesn't make tracks sound better or worse, it's just a volume knob that's mimicking what streaming platforms would do for us. 2. As a mixing/mastering engineer, what's more important is Dynamic Range, rather than Loudness Target. 3. Loudness Target is for stream platforms to consider. While as a producer, I DO use this feature quite a lot. And it makes sense that it won't affect my tracks by any mean. I find it useful to have Studio One do the normalization, when my destination is local PC and/or cloud drives (both won't do normalization for me). So I can listen to those tracks at a more consistent/competent volume, and thus make better comparison to commercial songs. But I understand what you saying. This feature is not needed, when directly uploading to any distribution/streaming platforms.

      Yeah I totally get it and there will be more use cases where it works well, film and tv would be a good use case with the EBU and ITU settings. It’s more where it was marketed towards the streaming platform use case that was the issue. It’s not for everyone but there’s still use cases for it 👍 thanks for watching and for your comment it’s much appreciated.

    How do I find what formats (ogg-vorbis, AIFF, etc) to use when comparing the affect of different streaming outlets algorithms?

    • @ProgressiveSoundAudio
      @ProgressiveSoundAudio ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question and the only way I know of at present is to google 'name of streaming platform' loudness normalization (for example Spotify Loudness Normalization). They will each then reference which playback formats they use. Many will use AAC but Spotify also references Ogg Vorbis. Sorry to not be of more use here but they are all their own beast and use different methods. But you have given me a great idea to compile something together to make available for you all.

      @@ProgressiveSoundAudio Thank you! I'm kind of new to mastering and I've seen a lot of conflicting info on the subject, especially in regard to "target loudness". Your video here gave me a lot of the information I was looking for. Much appreciated!🙂

    There were a few useful new features and improvements with Studio One 6.1. However I’m not using any of them currently. But the tweaks to the Project page make sense.

    Do I need to keep windows audio as my interface? When I switch back to my interface instead of windows audio it doesn't work, but I leave it as windows audio it works, it just has latency and is driving me crazy.

    • @ProgressiveSoundAudio
      @ProgressiveSoundAudio ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re using a Mic with the Interface in OBS then yes you’ll need to leave it as Windows Audio but have you tried lowering the buffer size?

      @@ProgressiveSoundAudio thanks for replying. I finally figured it out. Voice meeter has a interface you can select as and I routed everthing that way. Thanks for your video it helped me out a lot. Thanks for the reply as well.

    I need my armed microphones to come through as well. How do I accomplish this without changing the device in Reaper preferences? Because that disables my microphones, and then there is no point in routing any audio because there is none to route.

    • @ProgressiveSoundAudio
      @ProgressiveSoundAudio ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a great question, if you can explain exactly what you do, how you stream and how you use OBS then I can give you some pointers. This video was aimed at stream capturing so your use case is more unique 👍

      @@ProgressiveSoundAudio OMG thank you for getting back so fast! I am trying to stream my audio from Reaper to Discord using Reastream and OBS. I am using Reastream on my master fader in Reaper to route audio to a VB virtual audio cable in OBS, which also has the same VST (Reastream) on it to accept the signal from Reaper. I then I change the audio monitoring to "Mute and output". And then it feeds back unless the volume is under 50%. Cant seem to find a solution.

    • @ProgressiveSoundAudio
      @ProgressiveSoundAudio ปีที่แล้ว

      There can be a few issues at play here so we may need to rule a few out. Firstly do you have any Monitor speakers set up that may be playing back the audio at the same time as you playing? Also does your Interface have a Monitoring knob/switch?
