So strange the sound is all good for me. I sometimes find I forget my headphones are still plugged in and I think the sound isn't working so maybe that's the one or something else is connected that's being sneaky. Sarah xxx
Thank you for this! ❤
You're so welcome :)
can you do a in depth video for a small bust adjustment.?
Of course :) I'll record and share it soon
Thank you for these, Sarah. Very useful ❤
You're so welcome :)
You're so welcome :) xxx
Hi, so is the equivalent for trousers, of making sure a top fits ( by measuring your under arm or across the back, as you mentioned - then full bust adjustment,) measuring where your actual hips are and doing a full bum adjustment. Would this be a more flattering fit than doing what every pattern maker says and measuring the fullest part and calling that your hipline. I hope this question makes sense because I have literally struggled for years understanding trousers fitting. These tutorials are incredibly helpful thank you.
LOVE this question! So this is where the nuances come into play and you're spot on! If you find you know that your side seam lines would always sit in the wrong place due to compensating for a larger bum then measure at the actual hip line (or just take the front hip measurements and compare them) and then do a full bum adjustment would make a lot more sense and save time in this case. This is why I say these are the 'normals' to help choose the right starting size but it does vary from body to body and if you can help cut out some of the fit adjustments by choosing a starting size in a slightly different way then 100% go for it and go about the approach I mentioned with a top :) Sarah xxx
@@thesewingretreat1205 thank you so much for your detailed answer I really appreciate it 😊
@@rachellockley260 You're so welcome! xxxx
@@rachellockley260 Of course :) xxx
What can one do to JUST GET STARTED
To just start with the fitting process 1. If you're not a B or C cup then understand what starting size/s you really want to be using to reduce the number of adjustments you'll want to make 2. check your lengths, waist sizes and bust sizes and adjust accordingly :) I wish I could say there's a process to skip to the perfect fit but unfortunately not but these few adjustments will make a difference Sarah x
Thanks, Sarah. This is great information!
i have watched many different ways of removing the dart and this method is the best. Thank you.
Aww that's soo good to hear! I'm glad it's helped. Feel free to drop me a DM on Instagram to say Hi! I'd love to hear where you're up to in your sewing and pattern cutting journey instagram.com/thesewingretreat/
Thank you so much ! , Can I use this for a crop jacket if I don’t want to put darts on it ?
Hey there, of course. You can use the same technique with your jacket blocks/patterns if they have darts on them. Depedning on the design if you want your jacket more fitted, I would recommend using darts in your pattern.
Thank you
No problem at all! Feel free to DM me on Instagram if you have any questions 🙂
Can this technique be used for stretch fabrics? Thanks for the video
Hey Will, so you can have darts with stretch if you have a larger bust. This is a good idea to help with the shaping or if the fabric doesn’t have much stretch. If this was the case, you can use this same method ❤
❤❤❤❤

Aw amazing, that's great you found it helpful :) Feel free to come and say hey over on Instagram @thesewingretreat
Hi there. How would you remove the dart without adding extra fabric?
Because there is no waist shaping, you could get away with not adding that extra volume. If you had waist shaping as well, you would need to add that extra volume because it needs to go somewhere :)
Thank you for sharing this. Just got cut or notch fabric to

This is such an excellent tutorial. I will admit, sleeves have always been the bane of my sewing life but suddenly it all makes sense! I've just inserted two tricky sleeves into a top and no creases or tucks! That pin makes all the difference! Hurrah! Thank you. 😀
Hey hey, aw this is soo amazing to hear!! What a fabulous win :). It's a great trick right - I think most of us have felt the same about sleeves before but once you know a few tricks, they'll become your favourite part to sew! No problem :). Feel free to come and say hello over on my Instagram @thesewingretreat, I'd love to hear where you're up to in your sewing and pattern cutting journey😊
Can I use this method on a fitted gown?
Hey Abigail, this would depend on the design :). If you're creating a gown with a fitted bodice it's likely you're going to need the darts. Instead, you could pivot the dart elsewhere depending on your desired look and fit. When you remove the bust dart it creates a more oversized bodice. I'm always sharing lots of tips over on my Instagram too that you may find useful @thesewingretreat. Feel free to come over and say Hi ☺

I’d love to see a video on how you store your patterns. Are they also half-scale? I haven’t found a system I really love yet but a binder looks handy
Yes, the blocks in the video are half-scale :). Of course, I actually have a reel on how to store your sewing patterns over on my Instagram. I'll pop the link below for you. instagram.com/reel/CY4TrFwoZHB/ Let me know if you have any other questions😀
Wouldn’t the underarm seam now become longer by extending that last line? Everything else looks great
Hey Beau, apologies for the delayed response. So, the underarm seam will stay the same and the side seam will be longer but you can curve it up at the side to shorten it whilst still keeping the extra length at the front that you'll need :). Feel free to come and say hey over on Instagram and pop any other questions over instagram.com/thesewingretreat/
No worries. Thanks for responding.
What do you do to the arm pattern when you add the ease at the line that is going through the armhole?
Hey Sierra, so if you add a certain amount all the way down going through the armhole on the front bodice, you want to also do the same on your sleeve pattern so they both match up when you come to sew it together. I would recommend making a toile once you've added in ease to your pattern to check it's all matching up and so you can test if you want to add more or less ease. I go in more depth about design ease inside my signature pattern cutting design course, Design Confidence :). Let me know if you'd like more information on this. Feel free to come and say hey over on Instagram too instagram.com/thesewingretreat/
Brilliant thank you xx
Aw no problem at all Jane. I have lots of tips over on my Instagram too that you'll find useful instagram.com/thesewingretreat/ Feel free to come over and say Hi ☺
Thank you for sharing this. Can I use this on fabric to mark notches.....not sure if I heard you say that. Thank you so much 😊
Hey Lynette, no problem at all! :) No, I don't use my notches to mark them on the fabric. They're usually not sharp enough for the fabric and you only need a little snip in your fabric to mark the notch so you can use your fabric scissors for this. Feel free to come and say Hi over on my Instagram and pop over any other questions via DM @thesewingretreat
I’d love to practice this--is there a free PDF for the miniature bodice pattern?

Hello just came across your video and i would like to say it's really good but it would be really good if you could use a color pen to draw which will make it easier for the viewers to understand. Thank you 🤗
Hey Yani, apologies that this tutorial is a little lighter. We use thicker and darker pens on our other tutorials if you'd like to take a look at those too😃 Is pattern cutting something you're keen to learn more about?
You are wonderful and amazing but a little too fast for me,what is step3 and step4 how did you get the measurement I saw you were taking some measurement kindly advise thank you for kind assistance I appreciate it very much.bs
Hey Bebe, sorry that you're having trouble with the speed of the video. You can change the playback speed to slow it down slightly by going into settings on the video :) So step 3 - you repeat step 2 but for the back facing piece making sure that the measurement down the side seam of your facing is the same on the back as is it is on the front. This is important because this is where the front facing piece and back facing piece will join up so we want them to be the same length. You can then trace off the facing pieces to create the pattern for them and don't forget to add any annotations. Here's my blog about drafting and sewing an all-in-one facing which may help too: www.thesewingretreat.co.uk/post/how-to-draft-and-sew-an-all-in-one-facing All the videos in my courses are slower and you're able to pause and revisit them anytime too.
