Solar Edge Interference to Amateur Radio Stations
Ham Radio Operators have been experiencing RF interference caused by Solar Optimizers made by a Solar company called Solar Edge. First described in a QST article published in April 2016 and written by Tony Brock-Fisher, K1KP. it was found that the optimizers and their connection loop could generate severe RFI. Since then many reports of interference caused by Solar Edge systems have been reported. RFI can be heard for a distance of up to 1 mile or more. To identify this interference, simply tune to 14.198 up to 14.200 and listen for a blowing type sound. You will find that this interference disappears at night and can occur every 100 to 200 khz across 30 to 6 meters with 17 and 20 meters being the most severely affected. The Solar Edge systems are becoming increasingly popular and ham radio operators should be aware of this issue.
It should be said that Solar Edge optimizers do seem to work quite well for their intended use - to selectively turn panels on and off if sunlight is not distributed evenly across the panels. Solar Edge is aware of the problem and is interested in retrofitting offending installations with newer optimizers and ferrite chokes. They also say that they are going to release an improved optimizer but that they will not pull the interfering optimizers out of the distribution chain unfortunately.

US Tower MA-770MDP install along with a Steppir DB18 Antenna
มุมมอง 33K9 ปีที่แล้ว
Here is a brief slide show of the main steps involved in installing my ham radio tower and antenna. The Tower is a US Tower tubular MA770 with positive pulldown motor and limit switches. The antenna is a 40-6 meter DB18 Steppir. These were installed between October 2014 and January 2015. This information is provided as-is without any warranty.

With the crane and especially the concrete pump, your approach was stellar. I do have one question though. The specs for the MA-770 indicate a max wind loading (at 62 foot height @ 85 mph) at a paltry 1 sq. foot. antenna area. What am I missing?

It's a useless gimmick structure. Just make a regular loop and hold it.

4:53 This is where I was confused looking at my TMM-433ss instructions. I didn't realize that the grout was added after the fact. So the tower is sitting on leveling nuts and once plumb, the nuts remain and grout was forced in inder the base? In my manual it showed the leveling nut in the grout and It didnt make sense, now I think it does. Thanks for showing that

OK, here goes! Check out '73 magazine article dated April 2016 "Can Home Solar Power and Ham Radio Coexist?" for a possible cure. Unfortunately for me, I didn't discover this article until AFTER I had eighteen panels and a Solar Edge system installed on my QTH. BUMMER, Bummer, Bummer. I can't afford the fix so I have to drive 15 mi to the mountain(s) or 15 miles to the entrance to the Antelope Island State Park gate's parking lot to rid myself of the noise level! DE KA7MWQ

I live in Northern Utah and I am getting a loud "whirr" noise around 14.198. I have neighbours around me that have solar panels. I haven't checked at night, but I might do that this weekend. I might add ferrite chokes on my feedline to my UNUN to see if that helps.

  • @iu2ikwautocostruzioni835

Yeah, I have found the same in my home! The inverters produce an armonic wave around 425-435 Khz ( close to the 455 KHz IF ) that is mixed in conventional superheterodine radios ( in 2nd, 3rd or 4rth conversion ) and so it cause the upgrade of background noise in all the bands... This dont happen in SDR receivers because they directly sampling all the frequencies, without mixing! I saw the 425-435 KHz noise in my SDR-1 receiver!!! you can see also Here: th-cam.com/channels/JuvZDo-M2yqmd3SyWkiEfw.htmlvideos?disable_polymer=1 I have fixed it with a 10 cells High pass pi-filter in serie to the receiver only (bypassing the tx section) with a cut frequency of 1,6-1,7 MHz. Thanks for the info. I have read the articles referenced. I returned from vacation to find my neighbor had solar panels installed. The display of my FLEX on receive was pretty much solid yellow vertical stripes. I can work around a lot of the noise by diddling settings, but the interference is really bad, all the way up to 6 meters, but worst on 40 meters (full time s8). Solar Edge and HD Wave inverter. Not sure what's next but working on it.
