I feel bad that I don't know much about Ghibli movies! I'd probably really enjoy them. Someone recently was asked to do Meow's Moving Castle as an architectural sketch... and I might do that. I love your use of vibrant colors - these are all so beautiful! Totoro is so cute! I love him! I enjoy working with gouache - it's become one of my favorites when I want to do something quickly. Well done, Chika! I always look forward to Thursdays!

Ohhh im so inspired by you!!! Hello btw! I'm Nico- fellow illustrator & ghibli fan-- im so taken aback by your gouache skill, that's always been the medium I've struggled with the most ;; this sketchbook makes me wanna try it out again !! lovely vid, looking forward to more <3 <3

really liking the yellow and lighting in this video! is that the same small spray pen or water related item you used outside? omg the little piano bit at the end idk if it's because of the Gouache as opposed to another medium - maybe just the limited number of colors - but it felt very easy to watch this video you look so comfortable making these new videos! I can see how much effort you put into the first 30 seconds! the friendly lighting, the art in the background, and even little things like: on this channel - in this video! unrelated, but, I really liked the thumbnail for this video (probably the cat tbh haha) and so went to check out the other thumbnails - what I found is that I seem to like the ones with green and yellow being in two diagonally opposite corners - but not if they are the strongest in the same corner - this also seems mostly unrelated to view count lol

im gonna have to look into the art friends video (if you end up making this) because i kind of lost most my friends recently! art is so important to me, but nobody would even acknowledge it many many times when i tried to reach out. my story is a bit sad, as i lost use of my arms 2 years ago, and slowly being able to do little things again (even just typing!) is so important and amazing for me. it was really hard to realise they didnt care for me the same way, and i need better friends 😅 art friends especially! wow 30 markets in a year? that's so amazing!! like every week and a half! i didnt even know there were that many (maybe it was a few that kept repeating?) either way it's great how hard you fight for your art 😊

yesss the gouache video is here!!!! absolutely stunning paintings! i didnt watch any ghibli movies until i was an adult, but i do love them a lot. i think i should copy you in painting from the movies, i think my style of colour is similar to you, so it might look nice too! i live in beautiful nature now, right near a lake, so often time i paint from my surroundings instead😊💘 my own ghibli movie😄 thank you so much for sharing! i use the himi jelly gouache set, it was on sale and a good price! but tubes might still be cheaper in the end perhaps. im currently obsessed with new watercolour paints i just gor. they're the kuretake watercolours, maybe you've heard of them? and i LOVE how creamy they are. they're kind of gouache-like 😊 i found mine for 25 Canadian dollars, which is like half the price of the usual i see online😮 highly recommend them though!! ☺️ LOVEEE that you play your own music in your videos, you are such a creative human being, and it's so inspiring to me!!! thanks for sharing all of this. have a lovely week!! much love 💕

Wow Chika-Chan! What a treat!! Sketchbook tour, Ghibli theme, AND art creation process?!!!! :) You’re too generous! My first Ghibli movie I think was Whisper of the Heart, and yes I did cry in that one, and probably started liking cats without knowing it. Princess Mononoke I think will always be my favorite, just because it’s a lot more different than the rest, Kiki’s delivery service was my 2nd Ghibli movie, cried in that one too, and yes…. more cat love after that. Either way, it’s very hard to find people that don’t like Ghibli movies. Speaking of Gouache, I am actually using it now, and in the process of completing a commissioned piece, funnily enough, very much Ghibli themed :D I still need to put a lot of layers on this one before it’s completed, and you’re right, Gouache is such an expensive medium, but very versatile. But I think once I have completed my current sketchbook, I’ll start my watercolor sketchbook which will be mainly Gouache and alcohol marker themed. Again, thanks for the video!

That Totoro painting was the cutest!! It was the first Ghibli movie I watched as a child, though I wasn't yet aware it was Ghibli. Growing up, I loved the other movies as well and only found out they were all Ghibli movies when I was exposed to the social media hehehe. These shows are irreplaceable. <3

The lady lives in Vancouver, Canada. That's a big city with a huge Asian population. The other city with a huge Asian population is Toronto. It is usually much easier to sell stuff in a big city because of the higher foot traffic. I would love to do this too, selling art on the street, but that means I have to drive about 20 miles to get to the city center. We do have a smaller city here too, but I may have to ask the city government officials if I can set up a stall in the public area. If that fails, then I may have to go door-to-door. And I don't want to go door-to-door because the distance between one door and the other door is pretty far away. I have heard that some people/artists would just contact local businesses to display artwork of local artists in the establishment. So, I may try that route.

Thank you for watching the video and sharing your experience! That’s a very interesting perspective. It’s true that different approaches might be needed to connect with people who enjoy your art. In Vancouver, there are local events every weekend during the summer, so the challenge was lower for me. I have another video about approaching local businesses like cafes, which could work well💪 Good luck with the challenge😊

It's definitely interesting to see how to properly set a display up, rather than just laying everything on a flat table. So now I have a different level of appreciation to those who put in so much effort setting up their stands and displays. I don't really go to a lot of conventions or markets, especially art walk, I am not entirely sure why. But after watching your video, maybe I'll go out more and observe and maybe buy a few stickers and talk to people. Such fun project! And truly I never knew anything about polymer clay, and I have added to my wishlist on Amazon :D The last time I played with any form of clay was back in primary school days...maybe when I was 6-7 years old. So I'll give it a try someday when I want to venture out of my sketches. I am pretty sure I can come up with something a little more exciting than my happy garden rocks :D So A+ for inspiring again Chi-chan! My wife loves Stardew Valley, she probably spent hundreds of hours playing it, and now that you have mentioned it in your video, and she will watch it, and I am pretty sure she'd want to replay it during her summer break which is NOW.

I promise you will love it, you should try it ;3 Chi-chan reminds me of my aunt who lives in Japan. She calls me Chi-chan. Wow, I knew it! Evie is your wife! Another fun video!! I'm definitely tempted to try it but we don't have an oven and I don't know anyone I'm close enough with to let me sacrifice their oven hahahaha. I'm gonna have to look up alternative ways to bake the clay. 😹

monthly challenge! random question but: How did you attach the goose neck (maybe different name for the long tube arm on the left of your desk) to the desk? Watching you mix the colors together reminded me of being a kid. Thanks for unlocking a memory! These ideas look great and most brought a smile to my face (especially the orange one)! Although I have to say I would have liked to have seen one of them within the first 2 minutes; for context and proof of concept. Edit right before commenting: I looked back through the video and found the magnet idea. So I guess I was hoping for one which was a bit more unexpected, unusual, or with unique interactions - like the one with the brush (no spoilers). Maybe I just liked the mostly still shot with movement from the thing you were talking about? Maybe even the utility of it idk. I hope there are a lot of suggestions on what to do next! Btw it was nice to see more of your illustrations!

Oh, I understand the gooseneck! You can clip it onto the desk. It's more flexible for me when I record what's happening on my desk. However, I would say it's still not my favorite since it casts a shadow of my phone when I record. Maybe I need to improve my lighting knowledge🧐 Are you using a tripod for your recording? Thank you for advising as always☺️. I watched my video again, and your feedback totally made sense to me. It's wonderful that I can receive feedback to improve my future videos💪. Playing with clay reminded me of my childhood too. Now my desk is messy and full of polymer clay 😆.See you Thursday!

Hi Chika! I was so happy to see my comment in your video. Thank you very much for sharing Japanese culture with us. My favorite sketch is the kappa. I remember being in middle school and playing a game called Harvest Moon. In it, there was a kappa in a lake and it would only appear if you threw cucumbers into the water. I thought it was so cute! I would love to have many little books around my house. I would use them for language learning, writing poetry and short stories, and mini reference books for my local area. Thanks for your hard work and gentle vibes in your videos. Take care!

This is such a good idea! Especially for those who may feel overwhelmed with a larger book (I used to have this problem a lot!) I think having something simple and portable and maybe not feeling so "precious" frees us up to have fun and explore. I love the hedgehog and giraffe! That must be in one of your earlier videos too - but I love that. Very cute. The yokai drawings and stories are so cool - I will definitely need to check more of that out - more inspiration! I laughed when you said you memorized plankton (or similar) names like pokemon! Haha! If school were taught that way I think we'd have more biologists in the world! (I love playing Pokemon Go now... what a great combination of art, culture, word play, collecting, video gaming, exercise... 5-stars, highly recommend) And thank you so much for mentioning my channel and I'm overjoyed that I could return some inspiration to YOUUU in some way. That makes my week! As always, I look forward to your next videos!

Hehe, I am happy you enjoyed the video! Your way of exploring art motivates me to have fun with different styles. I have lots of unfinished sketchbooks, and it makes me feel like I need to finish them and move on to the next. But these little books were more casual and easier to complete, and I found them very handy! 🎨 I am thinking of making art travel books for my next mini book project, like finding beautiful motifs and cultures in each country✈️ Ooooh, I have never played Pokémon Go.That's so dangerous...I feel like I would get so into it once I start, lol... ah! You just gave me an idea of making Pokémon myself from things I see to fill my sketchbook. That would be fun! Thank you so much, as always, for giving me such lovely encouragement. I will see you next week☺️

Tiny books! :D I have never thought of that and I really like the idea. I am going to save this video! I've been sketching on 100+ pages sketchbooks, and it is a bit exhausting sometimes, always asking "when will I ever finish this book?" So I will try the tiny sketchbook idea someday. And you're right, I like the Yokai book. Lately I've been playing Monster Hunter Rise again, so a lot of the monsters I am fighting are somewhat Yokai-ish ^^ Plus the fact my wife and I are almost finishing Yuyu Hakusho on Netflix, we definitely are seeing a lot of Yokai, some which are hilariously funny. I love the Reference book too Chika. That shows a lot of your observation power :D Always a fan of Tanuki, and I didn't know that a frog is Kaeru in Japanese...and have a different appreciation for frogs now, since I am far away from home as well. I've been taking it a bit slow on art lately, maybe because of the hot weather, maybe because I am just tired. Hopefully I'll bounce back up soon, and still be able to finish my sketchbook by the end of the year before I start working on Watercolor sketchbooks exclusively. Enjoy watching your video as always, and will wait for the next one on Thursday :D Thank you!

Hi Alex! Wow, I’m not sure if I have any sketchbooks that I could fill up to 100 pages! Oh, Yu Yu Hakusho! That's a good one! I have four unfinished sketchbooks, and I recently bought another one... different paper, different sizes. I am so happy you enjoy my Yokai book. For me, making TH-cam videos gives me good pressure to keep creating and learning something new. I will be traveling next week, so I hope I can get new inspiration for future videos✈️ Thank you, as always, for encouraging me. As you mention waiting for my Thursday video, I am also excited for the day after publishing to read your comment. See you next week✨
