Follow me as I document my outdoor hobbies. As I evolve the yearlong process of gathering firewood for home heating and turn it into a hobby business to allow my family to enjoy more in the outdoors. From Firewood to Hunting, I hope I have the opportunity to share with like minded individuals.
Bucking felled oak - Cutting Next Years Firewood Supply
Its been busy around the household and a few month since I made a video and have done much with firewood outside of keeping the firewood stand stocked (Sales are great) and moving firewood for the home stove and fireplace. I found some Oak that was cut down by BG&E and was able to cut a heavy load.

Firewood from Storm Damage Cleanup - 3.0
มุมมอง 1954 หลายเดือนก่อน
In Maryland we had some more storms from Tropical Storm Debby that brought a lot of rain followed by high winds. The last remaining branch of my maple tree finally gave in and officially this tree is no more. It will be hard to replace the shade provided by this tree on the south side of the house but it did provide a few cords of firewood. Clean up, stacking and splitting in this video. #firew...
Bucking Maple - Front Yard Firewood

Trying to beat the heat! Shorts and chaps for the win! Continuing to cut up the Maple that fell in the yard for bundled firewood. This tree is a complete loss but it will provide me with a good amount of firewood that should season pretty quickly. The challenge is that silver maple gets buggy during the summer but we cant waste it. Equipment List; 1969 Cub Cadet 124 Ford F250 XLT Stihl MS291 18...
CountyLine Splitter After Full Carb Maintenance - Did I fix it?

Having issues with the CountyLine Splitter bogging down. Initially thought water got in the gas, bad gas, dirty carb. I pulled, soaked, cleaned the carb. Changed the sparkplug. Drained the gas and replaced with 93 this time (will go non-ethanol). Cutting Up a Maple Tree for Firewood - In the front yard!

Wind damaged Maple tree from the yard needs to be bucked for firewood. Its nice when the wood is close but the cleanup and the loss of the tree make it less rewarding. I still have a lot of trees in the yard that need to be cleaned up by trimming or by cutting away dead limbs. I believe there are 3 more trees that need to come down completely. Do you run yours on Fast throttle? The kohler manual says to leave it between slow and fast but the Countyline manual says to run it on Fast throttle. I suppose if it were a big issue, there’d be a warning saying never to run on Fast Throttle.
Splitting those logs with the splitter in the vertical position looks harder on your back then using an ax to split the larger pieces. 😳
It definitely is a little uncomfortable. I have the Fiskars X27 and the oak that I got in my latest video I have been splitting the big rounds with just the axe. Didn't feel like pulling the splitter over and its been a while since I split with the axe. It does in fact split with less effort than using the CountyLine vertically!
Nice as they come right there, well worth the trip to round up.
Indeed, I am trying to get back out there but the weather and schedule has not been great. It sounds like someone else went out but I am not sure what they started cutting into. Hopefully it is worth the trip. Its only about 20 minutes away
Hey Eric, keep cutting as Travis wood say, enjoy the journey as BotaBob wood say, 👍🚜
I will keep those words in mind, thanks!
Please REDO the Video and speak into the mike or over dub after ......my speakers are wide open and your voice is barely coming out...I'm using CC....
I apologize Mike. This was one of my earlier video's and I am nothing but an amateur hobbyist. Although the volume is a low, I don't think I will redo the video at this time.
I have the older CL 22 ton splitter that I bought 2nd hand for $750 and have been using it for about 4 years now. It's done very well and split everything I''ve ran through it. However, I have to admit that I have NEVER tried to split any rounds the size of what you were splitting in this video!!! Those were pretty massive! I don't think my splitter would be able to push through them. Maybe one day I'll have to get one that size from somewhere and try it, just to see if it will do it? Thanks, good video!!
Thanks for the reply. If this was not in front of my house, I would normally avoid rounds this size and especially rounds from the base of a tree this size. It made it! Thanks for watching.
You need to look up gorilla back Log lifts. That’ll save your back from all that bending over I bought one I’ll never go back there. Well worth the price.
Where did u purchase the side rake? Ain't on Amazon
This one is the Black Diamond Large Log Catcher. I think I got it from Rural King or something like that. It was a while ago. I dont see it there any longer but I do see one that looks identical on Tractor Supply
I use mine vertical, if your going to pick up a log, especially if its big, no need to pick it up over your waist. The rack is not needed, i love my countyline splitter. IMO, waste of money and time to add the rack.
That will make good firewood and was convenient.
Thanks for sharing that. I bought the 32 ton county line splitter, which is just manageable for me to move by myself. It came with the log rack, but I only split in the vertical position. I have a hard time understanding why others cut in the horizontal, as it is very easy, with no lifting, to split vertically: i just roll big logs into place, split, set one half aside, and resplit smaller, to desired size. I've split 20" -24" wide west oak rounds easily, weighing close to one hundred pounds. I just sit on a round directly in front of the ram, as any splitting force would occasionally send splits flying sideways, but not towards me. Easy on the back, and I do have a double herniated disk. I learned from another TH-camr to split in half, then put the first edge toward the track and split off a 2" wedge.... Then I can split two or three 2"x4" or 4"x4" rectangular logs as I work to the other side. I'll test these this winter, but I think they will stack easier in the stove being squared off, and burn better, having more mass than a pie shaped piece. You motivated me to check my wood stack and see how my splits are drying. When I split the oak on 5/5/24 the logs are at 28% moisture. I just split a 3"x5" piece and it's down to 18% on July 6, just 2 months later. I have the splits stacked in a single row on several simple elevated racks I built, having seen them also saw on TH-cam. They are in my backyard and exposed to full sun and wind all summer. I move some to my covered wood shed closer to the house for winter, and cover the rest with weighted tarps when the rainy season comes. I don't worry about summer rains. It's great to have a nice log splitter.
Ive had my County Line 25 for about 3 years. Has worked great so far. When I have big stubborn pieces like those big rounds you had, I get the wedge into the end, then let off for a few seconds and let the wood absorb the force. Always helped. Hopefully when I get to 70, I will still be able to run it.🙂👍
It definetly sounds like a hydraulic issue. Your engine is fine.
Steve, thanks for the tip, I will take a look and see if I can make the adjustment! Appreciate it!
Your pressure relief valve probably needs to be tightened which will increase the splitting pressure. Google search on how to adjust this. Pretty simple when you know what to do. Good luck.
Thank you, I am looking for vids now to take a look.
What is the motor doing ? I only sold 5 bundles over Memorial Day weekend .
I feel your pain of having to do everything by yourself lol. Even the simplest things sometimes you may need help with but still manage to get it done on your own. Cheers 🍻
So true!
I have the same splitter and did all of what you said in the comments. One thing that I did not do was get a carb rebuild kit. Sounds like you are getting extra air which will make it run different. Water in the fuel can do the same, I did see you mentioned you had drained the gas so I would assume you put fresh gas in, non ethanol or rec fuel is all I run. I also seen you do what I do, shut the fuel off and let it run out of gas between runs. The only thing I could see and was not mentioned was the carb rebuild.
Thanks for the follow up. I will find a link for the carb rebuild kit and see if that fixes the issue. I did replaced the fuel with premium but I will be getting some non ethanol for it for the next tank. I did also see a video that there is a fuel filter under the gas tank and you have to remove the tank to get to it. I may try that as well.
Maybe you have some moisture in your gas ?
I thought that was the case initially because it started after the rain but I drained and refilled with fresh gas and it is still running rough.
Norway maple is excellent. Your vintage yard tractor gets out on the job too!
It is fun to get it out and put it to work. Just freshened up the mower Deck too. Hoping to keep it around some.
@@JuniperAcresFirewood When I got my Aries, the mower deck was on it. Removed it last fall so a week ago was first time putting it back on. Next time will be easier.
That cub cadet could move a car if it needed to. They aren't made that way any more🤔
I have the best log splitter in the world. It called big stong Grandsons. Feeding them after they get done can be expensive but totally worth it.
My boys help out some but we are all so busy with sports that it makes it hard. Most of what I do is before work when they are at school! My oldest will definitely eat me out of house and home!
@@JuniperAcresFirewood Both of my Grandsons are into football. I told them wood will make them tuff. Really they would do anything for Grandma food. If she makes a pie it is gone fast.
Definitely water in the motor, that particular air cleaner setup is famous for water getting in thru the wing nut screw area. It will fill the crankcase with water. The design is stupid! Make a shield for the top of the air cleaner or always keep the motor covered when not in use.
Agree, this was my initial thought but once I drained everything and cleaned the carb I would have thought this would have gone away. Its better but I am working on it still! Thanks for watching and thanks for the advise!
Looks like you got a good thing going there. If you think about upgrading your equipment we sell commercial firewood equipment in VA. Thanks. Keep up the good work
I hope that this is something I have to consider soon! I would need to lease some space for a larger operation but that would be a good thing too!
Try again. You could not give me that piece of junk splitter. Buy a eastonmade splitter, the best!!
Guessing you don’t like my splitter, that’s ok. There is no doubt that there is a big difference between what I have been using vs Eastonmade. They are not even comparable based on what I have seen!
I have the same splitter. Sounds like u need a Harbor Freight Predator replacement motor. Problem solved. My splitter was locked up solid when I bought it. Got it at cost because the stock engines are famous for getting water into the cylinder and crank thru the air filter screw with the wing nut on it, from sitting outside b4 they are ever sold.. U need a new motor or at minimum, new carb. LOL
You couldn't give me that incentive of junk litter. By the best, a eastonmade!!
I am not sure what this sentence even means…?
Not every one has $15k to blow on a log splitter. 😮
When you get the problem worked out... only run 100% gas. 100% gas is much more stable long term than regular gas with stabilizers. Those are pretty much snake oil.
Passing water.
Have fun with it. I just started a roadside stand as well. Even though I am upgrading my firewood equipment, so far all I've used is a 20" chainsaw, a twenty year old splitter, and I did score a bundler that needed repair for cheap. My granddaughter keeps count of bundles and lets me know what's going on, has also help restock.
Thanks for the comment, it is a fun hobby! It is up and down and so dependent on the weather but that is ok. Thanks for watching!
Do you let it sit outside uncovered in all weather? When you shut it off and know it will be months till you use it again, do you keep it running and just turn off the fuel till it all runs out of carb? Do you use star tron gas stabilizer or whatever stabilizer you prefer to use in the fuel.?
I made a mistake of leaving gas in carb once had to clean junk out of it. I shut off gas and let it run out of gas on it's own now. Another problem I had gas was left on for about two hours and float didn't close neddle valve. It filled cylinder and crank case with gas. Engine would not move using rope. Pulled spark plug then pulled rope gas shot out of cylinder. I've since changed oil and replaced carb. Now starts on first pull. Ran today
It is still not running 100% so once I finish splitting this maple, I am going to bring it back in the garage and take it apart again. I am going to pull the tank and apparently there is a filter under the fuel tank that could get gummed up. Hopefully I can keep it running. I have since made a habit of turning the fuel off after every session from a recommendation from a comment!
Your not doing it any favors by continuing to run it like that. Possibly water in fuel as noted below. I'd pull the carb and clean it well. Also drain and flush fuel system
I do worry about that but I completely drained the fuel tank, pulled the carb and gave it a carb bath, blew everything out and replaced. Filled it with higher octane gas and it is still not right. Going to pull the tank and carb again when I can get some time to do so. Hopefully not causing any damage running it.
I have same splitter he's not running at high enough RPM. I can see the throttle lever and it's not even half throttle. iIt's recomended that you run at max speed.
Great observation, the challenge is, (and I think it was edited out) that when it runs wide open it really sounds like it is starving and is less smooth. I will try to find a clip…I’d say I’m running about 3/4
Get new spark plug even if it looks ok
Thank you, I did replace this when I had it all apart. I will keep digging!
Sounds like there is water in the fuel
I have since pulled the carb and cleaned it. It didnt look dirty at all. I also drained the fuel and put 93 in the tank and it is still not running great, better but not great.
Yes , sound like the high speed jet might be clogged or just water in it .
Hopefully you got that figured out. Didn't seem near operating RPM
Still troubleshooting. Its running better but not right. Drained gas, and cleaned carb and still struggling.
I may have to take it apart again to get a look. I didnt replace any needles or gets, I also did not replace the gasket but I am not sure that would do it.
I wish I had not bought my Countyline 25-ton splitter, but it's too late now and I guess I'm stuck with it. I HATE the design of the beam that the wedge slides on. My old splitter (a 40-year-old Yard Machine) had a beam with a simple flat surface, easy to wipe off and keep clean. The new Countyline has a (whatever you call it) groove that the wedge rides in -- a perfect trap to catch wood chips and splinters that needss constant cleaning (I finally had to set up my air compressor next to it so as to blow everything clean several times a work session.) Today I actually got a fat wood chip crammed in beside the wedge and had to get my pry bar to free it. Stupid stupid design.
I hear you! This is the only one I have owned but that "channel" always has to be swept clean and the little holes for the debris to fall out at the end always clog with anything larger than a silver dollar!
@@JuniperAcresFirewood I finally, in frustration, began using it purely in the vertical position, where the channel clogging isn't an issue. Wish I could get my money back.
Good hobby Eric , 👍🚜
I have a splitter of similar configuration and need to add a table. Do you think one on each side would be even better?
My splitter has only the two weld nuts attached to accommodate 1 splitting table. I am sure there are ways to do it including welding directly to the splitter on the other side if you are capable. I think a smaller one half the size on "my" side would be helpful for sure.
What moisture content did it end up being?
The pine tested at 16% and the ash was 18% after being split!
@@JuniperAcresFirewood great numbers!
Yes Aric work smarter not harder, with the tailgate 👍🚜
Thanks Len, just seems to make sense when you have a loaded truck! Going through this wood pretty fast with bundles!
Nice splitting . 👍🏻🇺🇸
Thanks Del, Having some issues with the splitter lately but I think I got it worked out. Stay tuned!
Nice idea to get the splitter table right up against the tailgate.
Saves the back when I have the time to coordinate a full load and splitting session. Most of the time the truck has been emptied but I try to take advantage where I can. Thanks for watching!
Great video, thank you, sir!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
I'm getting into firewood and hope to use my 30 year old Ariens. Not near as cool as your Cub Cadet!
Haha, love the older machines! This is my primary snow pusher and it does a pretty solid job of that. I am taking the blade off now and trying to repaint the mower deck to have a spare mower ready for this season.
I am also building one and hope to get some steel on the roof today. I got bundler and stand from a tree service guy who didn't want to do it anymore. The stand was too rotten so tore it apart and repairing the bundler this morning. Yours looks great .
Good luck with the build! This works for the current production levels but I am sure a bigger stand is better. Nice score on the bundler, I keep looking locally but dont find them much.
Looks good Aric, if things go good when maybe upgrade 👍🚜🪵🔥🇨🇦🇱🇷
