Karl and Carl Meet On a Sailboat After 40 Years...And Jump Into...? | E70
Carl was one of my best friends growing up together attending the same grade school. We lived a few blocks apart and would listen to his older brothers records and super high power stereo with Bose speakers! Which is when I first heard the Who and the Beatles, and still love to this day. It was a calm day out on the sailboat with light variable winds, so we anchored most of the time and did some swimming in the cool, clear water of Lake Michigan.

      John, the centerboard tube and and line to lower it, is located in the front of the cockpit where the floor meets the vertical wall of the companionway. You will see the cleat there to hold it in place when it is lowered or raised. Have fun with your restoration. The O'day 25 is a great boat. It will all be worth it when you go sailing!

    Lowering the mast to aft. Yup I did that the first time with my 25 ft Oday, went to far down and the mast rested on the hatch cover, it acted like a lever and snapped my mast bolt heads clean off. That wont happen if you lower it to the bow.

      No, the outboard is not connected to the rudder. So normally all steering is done with the rudder and leaving the outboard set at straight ahead. If I need to turn really tight in a channel, sometimes I use the outboard steering and rudder at the same time.

    Good video. If a boat doesn't leak water from rain or melting snow, I am not sure that tarping or shrink wrapping a boat during the winter really makes a difference. It is the sun not the rain that damages boat finishes. Having a nice covering of snow and ice on the deck might actually protect the surface from sunlight. Over the years I have probably spent $10K to have my boats shrink wrapped. I have also tarped my boats, and I have let them just sit outside unprotected, and have not really noticed a difference. For the last five years, I have just let my boats sit outside uncovered. If you want to tarp your boat, I would use your current tarp as a template. Based on your old tarp you now know where all of the weak spots are and know what areas need reinforcing. You can also cut away excess material where it is not really need and have it more form fitting. Once you get your old tarp fitted perfectly, then transfer its pattern to very heavy-duty canvas tarp. I am sort of thinking that coving boats is a mass monkey see monkey do reaction that makes us feel better, but without providing any noticable benefits, at least none that I have noticed.

    • @karlsawesomeadventures9608
      @karlsawesomeadventures9608 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good points on to tarp or not to tarp. Yes, I can see the boat would be snow and water resistant if it doesn’t have any deck leaks but mine did have a couple. I actually need to do some deck core repairs eventually on the starboard side, from the previous owner, who didn’t seal the chain plates very well and a stanchion. I have repaired both with epoxy and butyl tape, Also, the tarp can keep water out and then if it water gets in anywhere and freezes it expands and can cause bigger cracks wherever it may find. Have a great spring! 😊

    A roller trailer doesn’t need to be backed that deep into the water, the boat will better self-align if she is being winched onto the rollers, not floated on. Might have been much easier unstepping mast if you used the original instructions from O’Day and lowered the mast forward as designed.

    • @karlsawesomeadventures9608
      @karlsawesomeadventures9608 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have seen the original instructions to lower the mast forwards with the boom. I might try that sometime. I have tried pulling the boat up on the rollers with the winch but it is too heavy and won't just roll on. That is why I try to float it on. I have also made some keel bed guides this year, and when I hauled it out in October it lined up the first time much better than in this video. Thanks for the tips!

It is very comfortable with 2 people seated. 3 people is cozy but requires moving around when you tack. Haven't had 4 people aboard yet. When you look at boats to buy one, watch out for deck soft spots and core or bulkhead rot. Mine has several soft spots where water gets in by the chainplates and other deck mounted hardware, on the starboard deck that will have to be repaired in the future.It is a great sailing boat! It's still mounted with the butyl tape! lol. The depth readings are accurate. I compared them with a fish finder that I temporarily mounted it's transducer on a pole. So I am just leaving it alone, since it works well.

      I have an in-hull transducer on my boat but I'm not sure it works. The gauges are no good. I think for now I'll do what you did. One more question, where did you actually mount the transducer?@@karlsawesomeadventures9608

      Also, did you just cover the transducer that faces the bottom of the boat with butyl tape and stick it on? how thick? Thank you... @@karlsawesomeadventures9608

      I mounted it under the V-berth on the inside bottom of the hull just in front of the first main bulkhead

      I just put a big blob of Butyl tape maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick on the bottom of of the transducer and stuck it on the inside bottom of the hull, but level.

    I have the same story. Had to drive 166 miles at 55 mph. I was so stressed out after that. No trailer lights or tags. Catalina 25...

      I will never forget that drive back, white knuckle grip on the steering wheel , and couldn't exceed 45 mph or it would start fish tailing! The trailer is all adjusted properly now : ) Which is covered in a couple more recent videos.

    How did you figure out all the rope that you needed? I have to make sure everything on my Catalina 25 is there or not...

      I did a google search and someone had a list of all the lines and sheets lengths and diameter of ropes for the O'day 25, from a 1979 memo someone had written.

    also noticed the leeward stays flopping around a lot, Ive come to find this is normal on the oday 25. I really had some trouble pointing last weekend on my '79 oday 25 but think it may be in part due to my headstay a little too loose, should the headstay only be hand tight like the side stays?

    • @karlsawesomeadventures9608
      @karlsawesomeadventures9608 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the leeward shrouds do loosen up a lot while sailing, I've noticed that every time I sail! was kind of worried. But I have tensioned all 4 shrouds equally but not super tight. I just make them hand tight than turn the turnbuckle 1 more time with a crescent wrench or screw driver. I tightened the headstay the same way.

    That looked like great fun again. (And your boat is so much tidier underway than in one of your first videos, when you basically set up each line as an individual tripwire in the cockpit.:) )

    As you noted, it was interesting looking at the boat from the water. Not normally something we see in your videos. I was also surprised by the underwater shot of the center board. Not really what I thought it was like.

      @karlsawesomeadventures9608 ปีที่แล้ว

      I need to replace the center board line sometime, because it is chafed where it enters the cockpit. Will have to get the boat hauled out on straps sometime in the future.

      @@karlsawesomeadventures9608 yes, that an interesting look at the board, I have the same boat, it seems that under sail into a current that it may try to push back a little? Is the centerboard weighted enough that it wont? have you tried a go pro on a stick to see what happens down there while underway? lol

    • @karlsawesomeadventures9608
      @karlsawesomeadventures9608 ปีที่แล้ว

      The centerboard is not weighted or ballasted and weighs only around 100 pounds. I have also wondered if it gets pushed back under sail, it seems like it would. I will try the go pro on a stick underway sometime !
