    I hated the zf. Zfc was half the weight and when I see more than 700gr I was angry. But, 1 its all metal made to resist and 24mpx is all I need, and it's the only FF with those features, will be beautiful when it becomes old with signs of usage instead plastic bodies. 2 yeah nikon metering is another story, coming from a7III 3 WB 90% manual here not a problem, manual wb is so simple once you uesd to. I keep 5500 fixed most of the time. 4 UT kolari vision mod on nikon does not destroy auto wb (as do with sony) 5 TZM02 works in video mode!! The main considerations for me are maximum contrast, lowest spherical and chromatic aberrations, High sharpness and micro-contrast (which are related to aforementioned aberrations) and a flat focal plane. Oh and low coma and astigmatism off-axis. Some of the older slower macro lenses achieve this without many elements or more than 1 ED element. Samyang's 135mm f2 is outstanding stopped down a tiny bit. Nikon's old 60mm f2.8 af-d macro achieves it stopped down.

      @@sneye1 Ok, so I posted some pictures for analysis. There are eight 35mm lenses (well, one is a 40mm and some are zooms set at 35mm) and while I shot them all from wide open to the smallest aperture, I only shared photos set at the maximum apertures and set at f/5.6, both in color and black and white (some people equate pop to tonal fidelity and eliminating colors tends to allow better focus on this aspect). The camera was set to aperture priority at the lowest ISO value (100) and all lenses were focused manually on the toy's left eye (our right, the one in the dark patch of fur). Lens correction was turned off in both the camera and the raw processing software, and no editing was done except for using a default preset for black and white conversion. So for all intents and purposes, for better or for worse, the photos are all straight out of camera with no corrections applied. I won't be looking too closely at the pictures for another few days but wanted to share now. The photos are posted individually to allow for closer scrutiny but there are also jpegs displaying all photos by category (max aperture black and white, color photos at f/5.6, etc.). The latter are probably the best place to share any thoughts and will also be where I'll be revealing the lenses in about a week, to give enough time for evaluation while avoiding any bias. You can find the pictures here (assuming the link can be shared): flic.kr/s/aHBqjBAAg7 I'm open to suggestions if you feel the test scene can be improved. I want to repeat the test with an APS-C camera that will add a few more 35mm lenses to the mix but will wait for any recommendations. If all goes well, I'd also like to repeat the process for the 28mm, 50mm and 135mm lenses I have. Cheers!

    15:46 "abrupt transition from shadows to highlights" You are talking about contrast. I know of no lens (and I own several dozen lenses, from the latest and vintage) that can "abruptly" tone map the luminance of a scene into a high contrast image. Lenses that have poor coatings, prone to flaring, or have dirt, mold or oil residue or are badly scuffed will certainly reduce the contrast by raising the shadows (gamma). The problem here is there is no formal recognition of "3D pop" in optical engineering; this is the language of lay people. Even the term "subject separation", which likely means more to most people, is purely a subjective characterization of a 2D image. I looked at a few of your photos in Part 10, and none of them look 3D or "poppy" to me. Furthermore, attempting to correlate optical arrangement, # elements, # LD elements, to a rather nebulous evaluation criteria (subjective), especially when you consider focal length, aperture, subject and background distances and lighting, sounds like pseudo-science. At the very least, the test method would have to be better defined and conducted as a double-blind.

    • @sneye1
      @sneye1 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks. I know all that. The issue here is the subjective, perceptual nature of the dependent variable. I am not aware of objective instruments that can measure it so I did my best to evaluate it in a blind test. The testing methodology is described in the second video on my channel. By the way, those practices are quite common in social science.

    I’m a woman, and have noticed that I’m the only one who shows up for camera gear reviews :-) One thing I’ve noticed is that I’m a bit of a tomboy and always have been, (although I love clothes and decorating!)

      Hi. Yes. Olympus 12mm f/2 is exceptionally nice. Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 (the pancake one) is not bad either. There may be others too.

    Microlenses on the sensors have been improved over the years to minimize the issues from non-perpendicular light falling on them. Before mass use of smartphone pocketable cameras used lenses not much larger than the sensors I still have a Fuji f70exr from 2007 with small fixed telescopic lens 28-300mm f3.3-5.6. It has a great lens for that size, zoom range and year with 3d pop. So disappointed I can't remove it and use it on a newer camera.

    • @sneye1
      @sneye1 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you. I think this is the case with Leica M only. Other cameras are notorious for vignetting when short lenses designed for film are adapted.

    • @dwaynepiper3261
      @dwaynepiper3261 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@sneye1 Adapted lenses do not have any digital correction. Many newer lenses rely on digital lens correction in camera for distortion, vignetting, etc. as it is more profitable than manufacturing better optics that don't require digital correction.

  • @dwaynepiper3261
    @dwaynepiper3261 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I suspected something like this was the case. Been searching for so many years for a detailed technical explanation without the need to read an optical lens design book heavy in the weeds of mathematical explanation. Thank You so much. Also until very good glass coatings the number of lens elements was limited as too much light was lost by the reflection of each element. This probably limited the use of low dispersion glass due to the need for other corrective elements. I also wonder if newer designs because of coatings are using several low curvature elements instead of one high curvature element which is more costly to manufacture.

    • @sneye1
      @sneye1 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, please note that I am a scientist, but not an optical engineer. This video describes a hypothesis based on a comprehensive study. Please do not confuse it with established theory. Highly curved elements should not be especially expensive to manufacture. It is corrective aspherical elements that are the tricky ones. There is some evidence that many of them are made of molded plastics to keep lens price down.

    • @dwaynepiper3261
      @dwaynepiper3261 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@sneye1 The hypothesis seems plausable. I have an engineering background but I am not expert in lens manufacturing and not familiar with the equipment. My understanding is because of the complex curvature of aspherical elements molding is the easiest and affordable method to manufacture such shapes. Plastic is a highly moldable material vs glass. Minolta in one case I am aware used a hybrid molded plastic bonded to glass. I expect high curvature spherical glass to require more material removal and increased time (cost) to grind & polish and more difficulty maintaining tight tolerance specifications. Upon further thinking assembly cost of more elements would be another factor that needs consideration.

    I suspect that simpler lens designs will produce better micro contrast and it is this that determines the "3D pop" in an image. Modern designs are typically much more complex than vintage designs, with the ideal of limiting image artefacts. I also suspect that modern photographers value sharpness more than pop. Lastly, coatings on vintage lenses are typically very bad in direct comparison to coatings on modern lens designs. I guess it comes down to what you value.

    • @sneye1
      @sneye1 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      These days the only value proposition is this: does the image look distinctly different from what could be created by a phone? This is what stands behind the renewed interest in lens rendition. By the way, coatings have little effect. They do however affect colors and flares.

    • @davepastern
      @davepastern 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@sneye1 colours and aberrations such as flares impact on an image. If the lens isn't giving accurate colour rendition, or has weird issues with flaring (like Canon's new RF200-800 lens on brighter highlight sections), then that is indeed an issue. I wouldn't call that little effect. As to phone vs camera lens - if you're solely judging a modern lens design on "3d pop" then that is a really limited judgment imho. Before watching your video, I'd never even heard of the term "3d pop" and I've been using a camera for nearly 40 years.

    My great grandfather was a caveman and he used tools to hunt and capture animals to survive so now I use a more sophistic tool (the camera) to capture images. Where as women catch men with their beauty, no need for a camera. We just use different tools.

    Its all about rendition and the older design lens ,right back to the 60's have it .I have restored hundreds of lenses and tested them against all this ed apo glass To be honest the longer telephoto lenses do benifit from apo and ed but only in low count .I remember using Kowa lenses at a wedding for the fun of it .The pro photographer was stunned when i showed him my large prints .He used this modern gear with as you say high lens element count and a hasselblad camera ,Unfortunatly Kowa went bust as they put more emphasises on high quality glass than Marketing hype as did european lens and camere companys .But now we know japanees lenses and indeed the good european ones are outsourced to Cosina It is also true for the latest glass for hasselblad which was outsourced to fujinon . Marketing Fluff will always outperform genuine lens manufacturers who either went bust or got a hold on good brand name and got expensieve to survive in a consumer market . If you doubt this guy pop a nikon 28f2.8 ai-s lens on an adaptor take a shot use the same settings an an af-s28f1.8 ed nikkor .Compare all results and sell that wonderful ed lens .
