Fr. Amit Kumar Toppo, SJ, was born on a serene Thursday, the 22nd of September in 1988, in the quaint village of Salo, under the Parish of Barikhajuri and the Diocese of Daltonganj. He is the cherished son of Marianus Toppo and Josephine Tirkey. His journey of education commenced at St. Albert's Primary school, Salo; then at St. Benedict's school, Gothani. And then at St. Antony's M.S. in Kanjia, where he studied from 2002 to 2004, laying the foundation for his academic pursuits. He then attended St. Joseph's High School in Mahuadanr from 2004 to 2008, graduating with first division honors. For his tertiary education, he pursued an I.Sc. at St. Joseph's +2 High School, Mahuadanr. He then joined Jesuit Pre-Novitiate at Vivek sadan, Shahpur Daltonganj for his initial Jesuit formation.
On June 16, 2009, Fr. Amit entered the Society and began his novitiate at St. Stanislaus College, Sitagarha. He professed his first vows on the 21st of June, 2011, in a solemn ceremony presided over by Fr. Francis Kurien, Provincial. His academic journey continued with juniorate training at St. Stanislaus College, Sitagarha, from July 1, 2011, to April 2012. He then pursued higher education at St. Joseph's University (formally known as Arts & Science College) in Bangalore from June 2012 to April 2015, where he obtained a BCA degree (Bachelors of Computer Application).
Regency:
Fr. Amit's regency period was a time of practical engagement and hands-on learning. From May 2015 to May 2016, he served at Ankur, Candidate House, Hazaribag. During this time, he was deeply involved in mentoring and guiding young candidates who aspired to join the Society. His role was pivotal in nurturing their spiritual growth, providing them with both academic and moral support. Fr. Amit's compassionate nature and dedication to service left a profound impact on the candidates, fostering a strong sense of community and purpose. Along with his engagement with the young candidates, He also taught in St. Robert's +2 High school, Sindur Hazaribagh.
Following his time at Ankur, Fr. Amit furthered his education with an M.Sc. in Computer Science at St. Joseph's University, Bangalore, from June 2016 to April 2018. This period was marked by rigorous academic study and a deepening of his technical skills, which he later utilized in his ministry and educational roles.
Theological Life:
Fr. Amit's Philosophical and Theological journey took him to Paris, France (in 2018), where he immersed himself in the rich cultural and intellectual environment from July 2018 to June 2024. After 6 months of learning French, He studied integrated philosophy and theology at "Loyola Facilities PARIS, staying at Communaute Saint Ignace, located at 35 Bis rue de Sevres, 75006 Paris. This period was marked by deep reflection, rigorous study, discussion - debate and a growing appreciation for the diverse perspectives and traditions he encountered. He explored the historic and artistic treasures of Paris, visited iconic landmarks such as the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Louvre Museum, and engaged with the local community by participating in various religious and cultural events. Every Summer, He spent meaningful and Grace-filled time at the Mother Mary's shrine in Lourdes, France, in prayers and in service to the pilgrims, specially to the sick.
His time in France was transformative, as he delved into complex theological concepts and engaged in thought-provoking discussions with fellow scholars and theologians. The vibrant cultural scene of Paris, with its world-renowned museums, theaters, and cafes, provided a stimulating backdrop for his studies. Fr. Amit often found solace and inspiration in the serene environment of the city's churches and cathedrals, where he spent hours in prayer and meditation.
On the 20 April 2024, Fr. Amit was ordained as a Deacon along with other 16 International Jesuit brothers in a solemn ceremony at St. Sulpice Church, Paris, France, marking a significant milestone in his journey. On his return to his home country, He began his diaconate ministry on July 1, 2024, at Haz Cathedral, also serving as Asst. PDD of the Province and Province Archivist. His Solemn Priestly Ordination took place on December 28, 2024, at Catholic Ashram, Barikhajuri, officiated by Rev. Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas, SFX, Bishop of Daltonganj.
