Looking in my archives I came across this video, it took me back to my beginnings as an immigrant in the USA where I had the opportunity to plant the first seeds of basic knowledge about latin rhythms to third and fourth graders at public schools. Some good rewarding memories on this video. I feel very proud of those times..... Marlon Simon.

An extraordinary work by one of today’s most gifted composers and drum set players, and by the Nagual Spirits, who continue to set the bar higher and higher for musicians in this genre. Yes it’s Latin Jazz but Marlon’s abilities as an orchestrator and his use of longer linear statements and counterpoint on this project makes you think twice before labeling this music. But have no doubts, this is JAZZ (uppercase …to make my point). The way Marlon voices the instruments, makes this band sound like an orchestra. The use of bassoon and French horn add so much to the originality of the music. It’s Timbral Flavor. Very exciting. Each player in this unit is a master of his/her craft, as a section and as soloists. The solos are impressive, not based solely on chops. What strikes me is the emotional depth and subtlety these people bring to the solos and to the section work. The Dynamic Duo of Marlon and Roberto Quintero bring it yet again. It amazes me that two percussionists steeped in Cuban, Caribbean and South American music, with such formidable chops are able to absolutely cook at a quiet volume. I’ve never heard percussionists with such a wide dynamic palette. They play really complex stuff at a whisper and they are just nailing it. And at the drop of a hat they explode and it’s just so powerful. Music students, Take note. Nuance and subtlety is the hallmark of their collaboration. Nuance and subtlety and respect for dynamics. Every time I listen to this album, I hear something new. The skill of these players are obvious. What impresses me more is the band’s emotional commitment to this brilliant music. Nuance and genius. Real storytelling. It’s is just unique and beautiful. It doesn’t sound like anything else. A masterpiece. This project deserves a Grammy, not only to benefit these brilliant artists but to help bring this great music to more people. The world needs to hear this kind of quality and this level of beauty.

The Simon Brothers are all geniuses. Marlon is such a Master composer. As an instrumentalist he is the guy who brought back the use of dynamics to Latin Jazz. There are so many astounding drum set players in Clave based music, be it dance bands or improvising instrumental Bands. Frightening technique and having 6 hands and 10 feet is kind of fun. Marlon has always felt that you can play really exciting stuff when you are playing loudly. Marlon absolutely burns when he is playing at a whisper. On his 2007 album “In Case You Missed it”, he and Roberto Quintero not only cook at a low volume, during those times when they are comping the timbral pallet is so wide. They are quietly bubbling right along, at a quiet simmer. Then all of a sudden, Bam!!! The stove explodes. It’s kind of scary. To me Marlon reminds me of Billy Higgins, a master of dynamics and taste and ability. Both men are masters of dynamics, with frightening skills. Both men are at the service of the piece being played. Both men with an individual voice. Listen to the beginning of this video and listen to Marlon’s comping behind Edward’s breathtaking solo. Gets me every time. Marlon the drummer serves the vision of Marlon the composer. He and his brothers Edward and Michael have elevated Latin Jazz to a much higher aesthetic. They have set the bar much higher. Marlon deserves much more recognition as a an artist in general. Go buy his records. Your ears will thank you.

First Family of Progressive Latín Jazz. They have elevated the genre to such a degree that the bar is has indeed been set much higher. Each of the Simon Brothers are masters of their individual instruments. Each of them are composers of the highest level. Together they are a historic movement in Jazz. Together they are a force of nature.
