G&L Tribute Series Fallout Bass, flatwound string demo
มุมมอง 14K2 ปีที่แล้ว
While there are some great reviews of the G&L Tribute Series Fallout Bass available online, this video explores what great retro tones are available when this bass is strung with flatwound strings. For this demo, the Fallout is strung with a set of La Bella, Deep Talkin' Bass 760FM-S strings, in thickness from .049"-.109". I demonstrate the bass in all three modes - parallel, single coil and OM...
Shilo
มุมมอง 1227 ปีที่แล้ว
Cover version of Neil Diamond's second recording of Shilo - the one on MCA with The Wrecking Crew playing Lee Holdridge's arrangement. I had lifted the string parts years ago so I thought I'd make some use of them. The bass part is also a lift of Joe Osborn's original bass part. I recorded this bass track using a 2013 G&L MJ-4, neck pickup only, strung with La Bella flatwound strings. The elect...

Both Sides Now - cover of Neil Diamond's version
มุมมอง 1.6K9 ปีที่แล้ว
My cover version Neil Diamond's cover version of Joni Mitchell's, Both Sides Now. This is one of my favourite examples of the LA studio scene from the late 1960s. Originally arranged by Lee Holdridge with Joe Osborn on bass and Hal Blaine on drums. I transcribed and recreated Joe's original bass part as closely as possible. Played on a 1993 G&L Legacy Bass strung with D'Addario Chromes
Solveig's Song 12/8 blues version
มุมมอง 1739 ปีที่แล้ว
A rough demo I made as part of my preliminary arrangement of Edvard Grieg's Solveig's Song. The final version included a strings only introduction in the style of the original orchestral version which merged into this 12/8 blues version. The final version has strings throughout. This demo was just me playing the 4 guitar parts and electric bass. I programed the drums using EZdrummer. this was p...

    I have this. I got lucky with a lighter weight 8 pound unit. Although unnecessary I gutted it with CTS pots, bone nut, orange drop capacitor and switch craft jack. Kept the pickups because they’re surprisingly perfect. Overall in my opinion it’s a top tier bass.

    This is the only demo I’ve seen where a heavier gauge string was used to compensate for the shorter scale. I’m actually interested in having the strings a little looser and easier to play as my hands are getting creakier. Loved this demo!

    Nice video, sounds great with the flatwounds, I believe the middle position is actually split coil

    • @hammerbass1470
      @hammerbass1470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They call it single coil, which is what it is. Only one of the coils is on in that position (the coil closest to the bridge). The forward position is full humbucking, with both coils running evenly. The OMG setting has a capacitor across the coil closest to the neck, which cuts treble on that coil, while the other coil is unchanged. OMG has a small amount of 60 cycle hum, since the two coils are not firing at equal strength, but the hum is slightly less than single coil mode

    Are the pickup poles height-adjustable?

    • @hammerbass1470
      @hammerbass1470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, all MFD pickups have individually adjustable pole pieces, and since it's a humbucker, you could in theory even have one coil higher than the other. I've never really done that, but it is something you could explore

    Thanks for review. I do like their P Basses. Do you know who makes their pickups? For example is it a designed by Seymour Duncan? How are the pickups on the G & L? I find the Squier Jazz pickups way to noisy / hot. Review scheduled on my channel. I will see if you have any G & L reviews. I like SX basses and even cheap J & D bass is pretty good with EMGs in it. I have a Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar and the Seymour Duncan p bass pickups are solid. Jazz at rear was noisy and weak - so replaced with a Ironstone Alnico and much nicer.

    • @hammerbass1470
      @hammerbass1470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I need to do some more reviews, but I've been super busy gigging lately. I'm mostly a G&L guy, so I'd likely do more of those. The G&L pickups are made in different places - all of the MFD pickups are made in California, but the Tribute alnico pickups are often made overseas. I'm not sure who makes the Squier pickups but I believe they are made overseas also. It has been my experience that sometimes with any of the Indonesian builds, the pickups can vary a bit due to different tolerances. My G&L Tribute JB has amazing sounding pickups, but a friend of mine has the same bass and his pickups were a bit dull sounding, so we replaced those ones. Just maybe a little less consistent. I have been extremely impressed with the overall build quality of the Indonesian instruments

    • @Pedroleum100
      @Pedroleum100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think these Squier P Basses have Alnico Split Single-Coil Pickups installed. I have bought such a Classic Vibe 70s P bass (the walnut version), but am unhappy with the pickups. That is why I will replace them with Dimarzio Relentless pickups which have been designed in cooperation with Billy Sheehan. They are really improving the bass sound all over the place plus they have been designed to support finger style playing!

    • @ramencurry6672
      @ramencurry6672 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question. I think the pickups are designed by Fender since Squire is a Fender company and Fender does have their own pickups department. The pickups are most likely made in Asia under Fender’s instructions. Those pickups are outstanding though

    Very informative - thanks. I've been looking at getting hold of a Fallout for some time. The flats really do suit this bass well. I own a G&L M-2000 (quite rare these days) so I know the scope of the MFD pickups - excellent performance and certainly rank among the best I've played. Well, it looks like I'm sold on the Fallout - you should invoice G&L for commission! Thanks again, Chris.

    @michrun 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice review. Appreciate you keeping things simple and the riff consistent throughout the video and thank you for demonstrating it with flats. I keep going back and forth on this bass (both the tribute and the USA) and just can't make up my mind but.....based on the tones you were getting in this video, I now think if I do end up with one it will be the tribute at about half the cost of the USA version so there's one question answered. I also understand that even though it's "short scale" it's actually quite a bit larger overall than other short scales with maybe just the bridge moved towards the neck. Does it feel like a regular size bass in hand? I have no where close by that actually has one I can hold and play. Was there anything you didn't particularly like about it? Again thanks for the demonstration. Great job

    • @hammerbass1470
      @hammerbass1470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the instrument is laid out so that it sits far enough out that it does feel closer to a long scale bass than you might expect, so it's not a huge adjustment to switch back and forth. I guess a combination of the body size, horn placement and bridge placement help with that. The only tiny thing that I don't like as well as I might is the satin neck finish. I'm a big fan of gloss maple boards, and the Indonesian shop actually does a really nice gloss. I would have preferred that, but I do understand that most players prefer the satin

      May I know if you went with Fullerton or Tribute model? I still can't decide. What makes the Fullerton twice the price with the Tribute using the same pickup and bridge. Fit and finish? I understand that import use probably cheaper and electronics and hardware, but I'm sure it's good enough. If they have the Tribute in black with maple fretboard I'll do it now, but too bad that combination is only for Fullerton.

    • @michrun
      @michrun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wcheng4927 If this question was directed to me, I personally went with the tribute. This video helped me with that decision as I just couldn't see paying more than twice as much for the Fullerton, and am completely satisfied. One of the big cost savings, as I understand it, is that the tribute is assembled in Indonesia with not much, if any, differences in parts. This isn't my main bass so the tribute was more a want than a need, plays really nice, sounds great with flats, and the cost left me with no buyer remorse. I like a rosewood fingerboard and, like you, wish there were more color options but being that I didn't have a black bass that's what I opted for.

    • @wcheng4927
      @wcheng4927 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michrun yes, thanks for your response! I read somewhere that G&L switched to a new business model not too long ago hence the Fullerton Deluxe (probably similar to Fender's Am Std) - limited color options, no more hard case, and not PLEK'd at the factory. I have never played any G&L but people seem to really like it over Fender. How is the fret work on your Tribute? Neck fits in the pocket snugly with no real gap in between? Plan to keep it as my only bass, sold my Mustang Bass, going to sell my Starfire Bass (great studio bass, not the most comfortable at band practice let alone shows) very soon to fund this. I like the versatility of the single MFD pickup, and the ergonomic of a standard scale bass on a short scale.

If anyone can upload the Stan Hamilton album with the white jacketed dancer (male),its one of the best scottish dance band records ever made,the rhythm is different from what has become the normal style,its all about the downbeat,ie no hi hat, or second acc playing the offbeat either,and Stan takes a few 8 bar melody lines too.Its the most swingiest scottish dance music ive ever heard.Bobby Frew had a great lift in his playing.
