K&RO Hiking Happens
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 13 ก.พ. 2023
As we enter our retirement years, we have ambitious plans. From section hiking the Appalachian Trail state by state to peak bagging in the Adirondacks, we’ll be very busy. Along the way we’ll be visiting some of our great national parks and there’s even a trip to Iceland in the works!
Our first challenge is to hike the New Jersey section of the Appalachian Trail and we’ll soon follow that with the New York section. Our long goal being to hike the Appalachian Trail through as many states as we can. Another challenge will be to bag more of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks (we have 2 so far 😄).
Our motto is “Every successful hike begins with a good plan”. We spend hours, days and even weeks planning our hikes and we’d like to share our hard work here with you. From amazing vistas and points of interest to trail conditions to where to park and how to find bathroom facilities, our videos will feature everything you need to know about the trails, so you’ll have a safe and enjoyable hike.

Exploring New York Section 2 on the Appalachian Trail
We begin our series on How to Section Hike the Appalachian Trail through New York with a close-up look at Section 2.
Hoyt Rd (CT/NY Border) to RT-22 (Pawling, NY)
We hiked this on September 22, 2024.
Well, we finally got underway with New York. It was planned for earlier, but we decided to start with Connecticut this year, so it's exciting to be able to start it before year end. It was a pretty quiet and short start to a state that offers up some challenging terrain later on. This first section is mostly forested with no vistas but the open farmland near the end is beautiful with a picturesque water tower.
We crossed paths with our doppelgangers. Another group section hiking the trail like we are. They are much farther ahead of us though.
This first section is actually NY 2 because NY 1 is the same as CT 5. The reason for that is because NY 1 used to be mostly in NY but has since been rerouted to be mostly in CT now and hence was renamed to CT 5. The remaining NY sections kept their original designation.

Mount Tammany Blue Blaze Trail Explained

Thousands of people hike New Jersey's Mount Tammany. The Red Dot Trail is the most popular route to the summit, but there is another way up. The Blue-Blaze Trail is an alternate route that is not as steep. It's also a very common route to take down from the summit but not everyone knows how to find the Blue-Blaze Trail or what to expect from it. In this video, I will show you exactly how to fin...

2023 Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey. Still raining at Navesink Twin Lights, our 2nd stop on day 1, and keeping our new log books dry was the new challenge. I'm really annoyed now!🤬 Click the link in the short to see the entire challenge. Or better yet, take the challenge yourself this year. It's held the third weekend of October every year. lighthousechallengenj.com/
Wow, 1764 is impressive
@@hikingoutdoorfamily I was pretty crabby about how the day was starting but fortunately it got a lot better. 😀
"Only a few steps" "They don't call me Sarge for nothing" lol good one
@@travelingRonman Ha Ha, yeah it didn’t take me long to live up to my trail name. I think we had just adopted our names that morning!
The high point of West Virginia has a deck like that.
@@chrisj5443 I just looked it up. Spruce Knob right? I wish I knew about that earlier. We’re going to be in WV in a few weeks but I don’t think we’ll be able to work it into our plans at this point. Thanks for the tip!
Too bad about the haze. I think you could still see pretty far though.👍
I was surprised to still see High Point Monument with the haze. I want to get back there on a clear day.
Wow the oldest operating lighthouse in the US. That’s impressive. 👍
There are old military barracks there too.
Surprisingly, I have not been here yet.👍
Gotta get it on your list! This was one of those Canadian forest fire smoke days so the long-range view just wasn't there.
One of coolest sections of trail. Really enjoyed hiking this
@@travelingRonman I agree. We had been on multiple portions of the AT in the DWG area but until we decided to hike the whole trail through the state, we had not been to the boardwalk section before. It was a lot of fun and many thru-hikers mention it to us.
The High Point Observation Deck is right along NJ Section 3 on the Appalachian Trail. It offers an excellent view of the High Point Monument and surrounding area. Click the link in this short to see all of this section.
2023 Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey. Sandy Hook Light was our first stop on day 1. It was raining and there was a line. 😠 Not a good start! Click the link in the short to see the entire challenge. Or better yet, take the challenge yourself this year. It's held the third weekend of October every year. lighthousechallengenj.com/
Looks like a beautiful area
A very popular section of AT in NJ. With road access at both ends, a lot of people come to hangout and watch wildlife in the swamp. The boardwalk is about a mile long.
guess why the trail you're on is planked & features a bridge...
It's a swamp.
Cool section of the AT.👍
@@CraigKoppel The boardwalk and bridge here were the largest construction project on the AT in history. Before they constructed it, the trail used to detour around the swamp via 2 miles of roadway that looped into NY and back.
The Pochuck Boardwalk and Suspension Bridge across the Pochuck Swamp is a standout area along NJ Section 2 on the Appalachian Trail. Click the link in this short to see all of this section.
I thought I missed a video because it’s section 2 but I do remember you hiking a small section of the AT that dipped into NY in another video. Seeing the little library on the trail was a surprise. Those hikers you met seemed like a fun group. Congratulations on completing another section. 👍7
@@CraigKoppel NY section 1 is the same as CT section 5 that we did last. It used to be part of NY but trail rerouting put most of it in CT at some point so it was taken over by the Connecticut AMC. Thanks for following along. NY will be getting lot tougher.
Y’all looked tired at the end. Can you remind me how long this segment was?
@@mikewhitt4602 It was only 8 miles. I guess we’re getting old! 😂 Looking forward to sleeping a little later as we get closer to NJ and have a shorter drive. Thanks for watching!
Looks like a popular spot
@@hikingoutdoorfamily Very popular. After Mt Tammany, it’s probably the second most popular hike in NJ. The short section of AT that climbs Wawayanda Mountain is known as the Stairway to Heaven. Thanks for watching.
Wow is it crowded up there. So much for the solitude!
@@travelingRonman Always crowded there, even on a crappy day as you can see. I’d like to go back there on a clear day so I can get a better video of the view.
Nice job
@@thierrymunseugandachildren802 Thank you! ❤️

Thanks for following along! ❤
Nice. I've never been to any part of the AT in this section
@@GreenhornPhototaker A pretty non-eventful start but there’s a lot of exciting and challenging trail ahead in NY. Thanks for watching!
Looks like a nice easy section to start off your new York AT hikes. That's helpful they had the closure/detour posted on the sign so you knew what to expect. I've never seen one of those little wooden ladder type bridges before, but it looks like you had a few of them on this section.
@@hikingoutdoorfamily Nothing too exciting this section but NY has a lot to offer down the line. I think I recall seeing one of those ladders when we hiked in NJ. They go over property boundaries like wire fence and such. Thanks for watching!
I don't think I ever remember seeing any A.T videos of that little library. That's a great idea. Those section hikers looked like a fun bunch. That guys shirt was cool. A neat way to mark off states. Not much happening in this section but NY has some iconic A.T. stuff coming up in future hikes. Great job on the first hike
@@travelingRonman Thank you. Yes, this was a quiet one, and it went by so fast. NY will get very challenging later on. I didn’t get a chance to ask that group how they managed to cover so much ground in the past three years. I have trouble trying to schedule just the four of us. 🙄
How cool to have a little free library at the shelter! Looks well maintained. That privy looks very small - and what a gorgeous day y’all had out there! As always, thanks for taking us along!
@@JulieJordanScott Thanks for joining us again, Julie! That privy was pretty gross. The worst one we’ve encountered yet. It was certainly no barbie privy. 😂 This was a pretty quiet start to NY. We’ll get to hug the Dover Oak next time.
Yeah baby!
We were happy they didn't win it in NY. So cool to be there when they did at home. The crowd was pumped all through the game.
🎉 Awesome
It certainly was. Full house, too. 42K+ attendance. Downside of that was it took more than an hour to get out of there. We sacrifice for the Phils!
We grabbed tix for the first game of the Phillies final home stand just a few days ago and we were lucky to see them take the NL East title! Go Phillies!
That is really neat. You certainly have a decent amount of snakes there.👍
Yeah, it was a surprise to see so many at once. Usually, one or two, but I counted at least 5 this time. Thanks for watching.
I have watched your videos . Your videos are beautiful but your videos are not getting good views because your videos are not reaching your target audience. Because your videos are not SEO, not customized. You need to do SEO to fix these and make the videos reach the audience.
🎉🎉🎉❤❤nice🎉🎉🎉
@@watandarvlog Thank you. It was only a matter of time before the snakes showed up to feast!
@@krohikinghappens500 Thanks
I walked up to my pond this afternoon and found about 5 or 6 garter snakes hunting my frogs!
It looked like they were everywhere.
@@CraigKoppel They were circling around the pond and skirting across the water. The frogs were on high alert but one was not so lucky.
Have climbed that a few times. Once in the aughts sat at the top overlook, then climbed myself down to the outcrop and sat for a while, then climbed back up and sat down again. As soon as I sat down a black bear climbed out of the brush and strolled across the outcrop I was just sitting on (have pics somewhere). I'm thinking it was waiting for me to leave.
@@stevematthews4489 That’s a wild story! I’ve been there many times, hiked all over northern Jersey, carry bear spray and have never seen a bear. I’m sure they are always close by and just waiting for me to move on, like in your case. Thanks for watching and commenting. Great story!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
@@watandarvlog Thanks for watching and commenting. ❤️ Mount Tammany is one of my favorites hikes in Jersey.
🎉🎉🎉❤❤nice🎉🎉🎉
@@watandarvlog Thank you! We spent a lot of time along this river while on the AT and the section through Bulls Bridge was my favorite. Thanks for watching and commenting. ❤️
That is a great view of the river. It looks kind of fast. I wouldn’t want to cross in this area.👍
That's gorgeous
This was a very nice area of the river. We followed the river for a lot of our CT AT hikes.
Hello, friends! I hope you're doing well and that you continue to post such splendid hiking adventure videos here for us to enjoy and watch!~
@@groundbreakerexplore Thanks for watching! Well wishes to you as well! ❤️
Hello so beautiful
It is a very nice section of the river. Thanks for watching.
So interesting and definitely helpful. Part of my love for the AT is connecting with my childhood self on “special days” with my Dad. I’ve never known where exactly we were, though, although one of my brothers talks about going to High Point, I don’t remember that at all. We lived in Glen Ridge in Essex County before moving to California when I was in high school. The route 80 connection in this video was uniquely interesting to me - making me want to do the blue blaze trail up to the summit especially to see the part of the AT I would walk through - you never know what might inspire your audience!
@@JulieJordanScott It brings me joy to inspire others! 😊❤️ There are a few other trails that come up from Old Mine Rd (last exit off 80 before PA) and connect with the AT along that section between Tammany and Sunfish Pond. Also a couple trails connecting the AT and Dunnfield Creek Trail to make smaller loops. Many options in that area. Thank you for supporting us, Julie.
I like the idea of combining the two trails together for a loop. I always prefer a loop trail because all the views are different. Nice creek area. I bet that swimming hole is packed on a hot summer day. I’m guessing kids removed the no swimming signs. Overall it’s a nice wooded area. 👍11
@@CraigKoppel It is nice to make the loop and most people do. I’ve just been there so many times now that it’s quicker to just come back down the red dot. And it’s fun to talk to people struggling on their way up. 😂 I’ve also done that 11 mile loop taking the fire road up to Sunfish Pond. Thanks for watching. ❤️
Awesome you saw a good game. My son got to go to the game last night and that was a bad one.
@@hikingoutdoorfamily Yes, last night was horrible! Today was looking bleak in the first half until we started to rally in later innings.
