Arguably, kicking in all it's forms is the most neglected parts of coaching rugby union, clubs, players, and coaches at lower levels of the game generally don't consider kicking as an important part of the game, otherwise they'd spend more time on it, right? Ex-Scottish international fly half, Duncan Hodge takes us through some simple kicking drills and principles that will help you coach kicki...

This was an amazing instructional and practical break down of defence, thank you. I would love to see more of these, and drills on how to implement these systems at practice. Also, if you have this on the attacking side that would be great too.
Thank you for this
Priceless video, thanks for uploading. Graham has an excellent way of explaining the process but also the reason why
👍
Класс!
Many thanks for making this video I think you are very generous to share your methods and philosophy with everyone. Loved how you value player safety and promote fun and enthusiasm but most of I love how you encourage talk as that is a skill that players can take off the field and use for life.
At 29:20 a defender is giving a little "How's your uncle" to whoever is at the bottom of that ruck. Gave me a chuckle. That being said, love the thinking that's going into these phases. It is a reminder to us non-paid coaches that we can framework better practices/scenarios for our players.
Great comment, thanks! Goes to show with a little extra thought we really can provide a great learning experience for our players! Cheers
Great video! is there a way that i can see the document more clearly, there are many key points I dont want to miss but they are too blury to read. Thank you very much!
I can't promise anything but will have a look through my documents and see if I can find the slide deck and send it to you?
That would be great! Thank you a million!@@totalrugby_PD
I am suprised this does not have more views
👍
Good video from this good elite coach
Very useful, not just for rugby, but for many sports!
Promo-SM 🙈
what year is this from?
Around 2010, so it's not the newest but all the principles are still very relevant to today's game! Hope you enjoy!
thank you for this...learning alot
My pleasure Joseph! Keep watching i'll be adding content regularly.
Given World Rugby's crackdown on high tackles, how does that change the wrap techniques used to shut down offloads?
A great question! If it is brought in and the tackle height is lowered to waist level, then obviously, you would not be able to 'wrap' the ball. The emphasis has to be about how to defend against the offload and how we coach the decision-making around that... we have to get players to understand who is the tackler and when the tackle is secured, while doing so tracking and recognising potential threats and react accordingly to any offload. I'll be posting some material on this DM soon! Thanks for your comment!
@@totalrugby_PD Thanks for the quick response! Love the content. I am a u14 coach in the U.S. and I find this incredibly useful.
@@justindangersmith Hi Justin, Thank you for the feedback, keep checking back as I add content regularly
This is so old. All those Curry players retired from playing at least 5 years ago. Half of them are now coaches themselves.
Hi John, Yeah it's not exactly new, but the skills involved in executing the role of the first receiver are still the same and Toony gets it across really well...
I wish this guy had a library full of defense drills
Shite game
How would this translate into defending a pod formation?
Hi, this would really depend on what POD system the attack are using? All the 'inside' defence around the ruck etc would stay the same, however depending on what the attack are doing, the defence could increase the resource around the ruck and have a double guard, so A, B, B, C defenders and maybe adjust spacing in the wider channels. Other than that, number up and go get 'em!
So glad I workout at home
Which year was this presented?
Hi Riaan, thanks for the comment, this was recorded back in 2009 at a defensive seminar at Murrayfield Stadium. Although the game has moved on since then, all the basic principles are the same...
You can tell this guy has played league, when I watched this I was saying this is exactly like league defense structure and thinking. Bloody gold
You certainly can! A lot of union defences are coached by ex-league players and coaches and have been for some time. More videos of Graham coaching will be uploaded soon! Thanks for watching!
@@totalrugby_PD can't wait thanks mate.
