Fastsigns Kirkland
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 14 พ.ย. 2023
Hello! My name is Chris, and I am the lead installer at Fastsigns of Kirkland in the beautiful Washington state. I have been installing signs and graphics since 2004, and a licensed EL04 Journeyman Electrician since 2007. Join me as I make vlogs and time-lapse videos of many of the signs and graphics I install all across western Washington. I hope I can help people learn more about the ins and outs of being a sign installer as well as the sign industry as a whole, with (mostly) insightful commentary and stories about the things I have seen and the experiences I have had in 20+ years. I feel it is a rather underappreciated trade, because honestly, where would civilization be without signs? Yet there seems to be a lack of content that truly opens the door into the world of signs and sign installation. Thanks for watching!
Electricians: Installers will LOVE you, with this one simple trick!
I just love it when a good electrician runs power for me, and has the forethought to label the junction box with the panel and circuit number. It honestly makes my job 1000% easier sometimes. I also love to be pleasantly surprised when things go even better than planned. Today we have another rather straightforward install of a shoe-box style push through acrylic sign onto a storefront wall for an AmazonFresh location in North Seattle, WA. What surprised me this time was that the primary electrical was ran much earlier than I expected. Generally the power for a new sign like this is the last thing project managers think of, at least in my experience. I do love it when the job can be finished completely before I leave, it honestly really makes me feel good, and is part of the reason I love my job. Sit back and relax as I waffle on about how signs like this are installed. Enjoy!

The Reality Of Sign Installation | When A Good Install Goes Bad

This one threw me a curve ball. An install that went from going so well, I wasn't sure I could make a video out of it because it would be too boring, to going just wrong enough that I had to show you how it isn't always what you expect. Nothing is ever what you think it will be, especially in the install business. It ended up creating a few obstacles that I had to use my experience, patience, a...

I do love it when a plan comes together. Even if that plan isn't much more than a very loose outline. Removing signs is probably more common than installing new ones, at least in my experience. Businesses open, thrive, struggle and fail all over the country. It is just a fact of life we all generally ignore, unless we have a vested stake in that business. So naturally a lot of what I do is remo...

Join me as I remove a channel letter sign that was installed poorly and illegally. Not by me I promise. While I understand the motivations behind the decisions the previous installers made, one has to question: how do they get away with installing a sign so blatantly illegal? It doesn't get inspected. Not to harp on Inspectors, but sometimes I wonder if they have ever inspected a sign once it i...

Gotta love them patterns!
They do make it almost too easy. Almost... :)
The “S” is crooked…
Really? It shouldn't be. Honestly how could anyone even tell from this angle?
Oh snap you’re right! Haha maybe the angle is making it look weird?
What do these projects cost?
Oddly enough, I generally don't know the cost of installs. One: because I just don't see those details, or Two: I don't want to know how much something cost if I mess it up. :) I would reckon this update cost approximately $2000ish. Again I don't know for certain.
Love the videos. Started doing sign installation and unfortunately the guy I replaced his last day was my first and been having to kind of learn as I go since I wasn't trained on much. Your videos have helped me a ton on learning. Would you mind me asking a question regarding a sign installation?
Thanks! I love making these, as much as they are, mostly me just waffling on about my job. I am so happy to know that someone has learned, or taken something away from these videos. Absolutely ask me any questions, and I will do my best to answer them! Again, thanks for watching!
@FastsignsKirkland When Installing a cabinet sign on a exterior wall with siding do you have any tips on trying to findd studs?
With wood siding, the best thing I could recommend is a good, not cheap, stud-finder. I have had limited success with them in the past, but they for the most part get you to within a few inches of a stud. The other, more invasive and less professional way is to "exploratory drill" by using the studfinder to get you close, and then just drilling every 1.5-2" until you hit a stud. Like I said, not the best way, but it is effective, especially if the sign will cover those holes. Also make sure to seal them up!
@@FastsignsKirkland Thanks a bunch for the tips. Did the install yesterday and it turned out awesome! Was kind of a tricky one since I had to make one cabinet a hinged cabinet that went over a attic man door. But got it done!
Any time! Glad to hear the install went well!
Like most LED assemblies with multiple color temperature settings, you may have noticed that the 4000°K and 6500°K settings only light every other LED. 5000°K is achieved by lighting all LEDs. It makes me wonder if the 5000°K setting is more, or less reliable than the other settings. Thanks again for another informative video.
I noticed that as well! I also had that thought about the 5000k setting, and I am not sure if it would be more or less reliable, since regardless of which setting you choose, those LEDs would be on for their lifespan. That said, you could probably run 6500K to its lifespan, and then just switch to 4000k and have essentially a brand new fixture, just at a different temperature. Great question! Thanks for watching!
"Drill Baby, Drill!" - DJT
Yes! I would also have accepted a bit from an old Robin WIlliams comedy show from the 1990's. Thanks for watching!
in sign applications how does the reliability of LEDs compare with fluorescent? My specialty is repairing fluorescent light fixtures. It is very satisfying to replace magnetic ballasts and T12 Lamps with electronic ballast and T8 Lamps including new lamp-holders. I always tell my customers the old fluorescent fixtures are high quality and cost effective to repair. Most if not all store bought LED fixtures are non repairable. Yesterday I was called to "repair" three failed LED fixtures, all less that four years old. For a 4 foot fixture I'm going back with fluorescent. I've gained very high regard for T8 and T5 fluorescent technology. Thanks
It sounds like you know a lot more about this that I do, but what I can say is that In regards to signs, I have found that LEDs, when installed correctly do have a longer life span than fluorescents. That said, there are sooooo many more nuances to LEDs than fluorescents. In this particular instance, I was involved with the initial conversion of this sign approximately 7 years prior to this video (and with a different company), which is right about the expected lifespan of the LEDs and power supplies. But the best case for this sign was to replace everything with newer, more efficient LEDs and power supplies. Perhaps the market is still adapting to converting fluorescent to LEDs. I have had great success with Keystone Signhero products, as they are a 1 to 1 replacement system for fluoro to LED, and they are sooo easy to do, just replace the old lamps with the new LEDs with minimal wiring. I can't give you any solid answers, but just know that there are new and innovative solutions our problems coming out all the time. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

referring to your crazy thought its when you kinda get bored and your head goes wandering,,,right?

@@FastsignsKirkland I love when that happens. I’m almost as fast as you th-cam.com/users/shortsjyGEEJl9mi8?si=3CJ4HPxWSt5qTVTp
Nice!
No wire nut put on the wires before pushing back into the wall?
Always. It's hard to tell but I wire nutted the black and white together (which I really do not like to do) since there just wasn't enough room to fit two wire nuts in the hole that looks like it was chewed out by a really small beaver, and if anyone did turn the breaker on it would just trip instantly. And the green wire you don't need to worry about.
buen calculo¡
¡Gracias!
I'm here for it, but no one is putting stainless bolts
I agree, unless you want the look of stainless steel, it really has no place in sign installation.
In other outdoor applications, stainless bolts love to gall and seize up and snap off when trying to work with them, I hate them
I honestly have not had a good experience with stainless steel outdoors. Thanks for watching!
@@FastsignsKirkland If you want corrosion resistance, heavy hot dip galvanized. It doesn't seize up like stainless even after decades in the weather.
Yes! I love me some hot-dip galvanized! Most of what I use these days is zinc coated, cheap box-store hardware because it works ok, and some of the signs I install just won't be up for very long anyways.
I'd love to know how many of these LED's go bad after any amount of time. I see this in about 50% of the LED bulbs we buy for our house. LED's last forever, LED's are so much better. Yet here I am replacing 1 year old bulbs from GE, Phillips, even the big box store options because the driver failed or the LED blinks randomly or strobes. Or you get one bulb that goes out in a room with several in the ceiling so you buy a replacement in the same color range and it never matches, so you replace all six and now have five random bulbs that don't match anything. I'm not saying LED wasn't the way to go but the lie of them lasting much longer than incandescents, I'm not sure was entirely truthful.
I couldn't agree more. LED's definitely have changed the way we illuminate our lives. But man, there needs to be a lot more industry standardization for the exact reasons you stated. This is exactly what I run into when I get a call to service an LED sign. Sure, for the most part the power supplies are interchangeable, but you HAVE to have the right brand/temperature/wattage of LEDs or they just won't match. Generally, (and it depends on the manufacturer) LED's last anywhere from as few as 10,000 hours to over 50-60,000 hours. But, like you, I have replaced LED's in signs that were only a year or two old. Lot's of factors, especially in signs, lead to them failing prematurely such as moisture in the air (even though they are sealed) shorts, overloading, etc. Thanks for watching!
keep them coming buddy ur work is impeccable

Hi any chance you would put up a video of you manufacturing this sign love the finish👌👌👌🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
We don't manufacture electric signs at our shop, since we are not a UL shop. This one was made by another company and shipped to us. I do have a video of me reassembling one after we painted it though. th-cam.com/users/shortsGr45r06yUhU
That’s a great job. I have a plastic fabrication business here in Waterford, Ireland 🇮🇪 but I supply cut lettering to a lot of sign guys. I mainly fabricate for the pharmaceutical industry so I leave the sign business alone as Waterford is relatively small and we have mainly Pharma companies here so I’m busy all the time. I have subscribed to your page and love what you do keep up the amazing work oh and Happy Christmas 🎅🎄

Great job! It seems to me that the previous 48" fluorescent tubes would be far brighter, no? How do the LED compare for brightness? Lavalier mic works well.
Thanks! They are about the equivalent brightness, more or less. The LEDs will be slightly brighter and a much whiter color than a warmer/yellowish light that CWHO lamps had. Thanks for watching!
