I took the car for a short delivery drive in the dutch winter. After some snowfall the temperature during a sunny day was around freezing temperature and I was wondering what the consumption, battery temperature and heating would do and tracked the in-car displays and used EVNotify for the battery temperature, consumption and power charts.

The 12V battery can be trouble if the battery is discharged more than the Kia engineers expected. To check if the car is charging the battery there is a red LED indicator in the middle of the dashboard.

The first 10 thousand kilometers are done with a 18.9 kWh / 100 km on average consumption. I did not try to drive economically at all, so this is what you can achieve without trying 😁

We had quite some strong side winds the last days in The Netherlands. The Kia e-Niro's Smart Cruise Control manages to stay within the lane without any real issues though. The driver was paying close attention all the time to keep it safe ! Don't try this at home kids !
Finally! EVNotify shares SoC data with ABRP. The Kia e-Niro is now fully connected in the right way.

Yesterday I used Soul EV Spy Lite to monitor the battery temperature. Today I found out the EVNotify is updated and gives a perfect overview on the dashboard of the temperatures.

To make sure you can really benefit from the full range of the 64 kWh of energy in the Kia e-Niro’s battery you can program a timer in the car that will pre-heat it before departure. Sadly enough there is no option to do this from the app. Of course the remote start of the heater is on my DIY project list 🤓

My first longer drive with the Kia e-Niro. Amsterdam Nieuw West to Van der Valk Eindhoven for a trade show. I used ABetterRoute planner with too pessimistic setting to check if I could make it back and forth and that indicated that I should charge on the way back. Ended up using only 35% SoC. Very efficient for the high speeds.

The car needs heating now to keep the temperature at a comfortable 21 degrees Celsius with the outside temperature at 7 degrees Celsius. Overall a 5% was used for climate but the electronics also required 5%. My guess is that resistive heating was used.

Another drive from home to work were I use the OBD link to capture the instant power using the great EVNotify App - evnotify.de/ - I am struggling to merge and overlay logfiles from Torque Pro in to a video, so this simply approach also gives some insights.

      Beide draaien op de Android telefoon, maar je zou een dedicated Android telefoon kunnen gebruiken. Inmiddels is het me ook gelukt om via MijnKia en een Python script de data ook live in ABRP te krijgen wat nog iets eleganter is.

    Bij mijn proefrit vond ik dat de auto wat slingerde tussen de lijnen. Het systeem wist de auto niet strak tussen de lijnen te houden zeg maar. Wat is jouw ervaring? Op jouw videobeelden lijk ik hetzelfde te zien. Overigens is de trajectcontrole ook actief tussen de afrit en de toerit. 😉

      Hij doet het goed genoeg. Zet er vaak cruise Control voor aan zo merk ik. Die trajectcontrole tussen de af- en oprit heb ik gemerkt. 3x een extra wegenbelasting voor betaald… tergend die A2

    Thanks for checking and sharing! So it looks like the low temperature is slowing quite a lot the charging rate! Even with the heat pump installed... Well, you started close to that 70% "slope" on the chart, at which point it's normal that the rate drops...but not that much: it should have charged at almost 38kW up to 78% SoC, right? Well if I'm not misreading that chart...it's the first time I observe one of these graphs! :-) Who knows, maybe if you started at 55-60% SoC, the rate would have been much higher...please do some more tests if you can!       In one and a half year of usage I never had to use the rapid chargers in the cold. At normal ‘Dutch’ temperatures the battery is nice and warm and will always reach the maximum speed. Eat a sandwich and drink a coffee and you are on your way again. Never wait for higher than 60% SoC at these rapid chargers.

      @@murales I have a 2019 Kia Niro EV EX Premium that I have owned for a year and a half since new. I mainly use the vehicle for city driving and have been able to drive a distance of 520 kms on a single charge. This vehicle does not live on the charger meaning it's charged to 90% and it's driven until the state of charge reaches around 15%. The time I achieved the 520 Kms I charged to 100% and the G.O.M. read a range of 556 Kms and I drove until the low battery warning came on. I can't recall how much range was left on the G.O.M or the percentage of remaining battery. That test was done in temperatures around 24 degrees cel with no climate control and that included some highway driving. The vehicle did not reach turtle mode before I charged. I live in Surrey B.C. Canada where it's been around -3-8 Celcius and the vehicle still charged at a rate of 44-46 Kwh at a level 3 D.C. fast charger. The only complaint I have about the vehicle is the back-up camera. It's not bad during dry daytime weather but when it's raining, snowing or dark the camera image is distorted. I personally don't use the camera much anyway though as I prefer the mirrors and rear window when backing. I did do one highway test where I achieved a distance of 450Kms on a single charge in around 24 degree Cel. weather.

      I have a 7.2 kW charger at home and the car uses the full power. I have a heat pump.

Here in Italy eniro is normally sold without heat pump, it's an optional add-on, charged 1000€ and you have to wait 4-5 months as it looks like there isn't a single heat pump equipped one available. Heat pump is probably not so crucial, here in central Italy, as for reducing climate battery consumption, but I'm trying to understand how critical it is when you have to recharge in temperatures between 0-10 degrees. If I'm not mistaken, without heat pump you only get battery cooling but no heating

      @@murales You have to be at temperatures below zero before the battery management starts to heat-up the battery. Tomorrow I will drive when the car is a -10 to -5 deg C and hope that the wintermode finally does something. If it does I will make a video again.

      I have tested the charging rate at 68% SoC yesterday and it was 22 kW instead of 45 kW.

    You say that it slows down when you move lanes but your speed shows a drop in 1km, yes it’s slowing down slightly but it’s not much. Having said that my Kia Optima does speed up very quickly when it is released from the car in front, which is better. I take it you can override the cruise control when you overtake, just touch the accelerator for a second or so and that will override the cruise, it will then speed up while you are overtaking, lift off the throttle and it will go back to the cruise, I guess this will work, it does on the optima.     Ziet er goed uit! Ik heb naar aanleiding van jou filmpje ook de boel geïnstalleerd. Het lijkt erop dat de odb2 dongle niet communiceerd met ev notify als ik abrp op het scherm heb. Als ik ev notify op het scherm zet zie ik gelijk de leds voor tranissie knipperen. Herken je dit?

      02semiata Yes of course, you learn how to drive with the little misbehavior of the system and that makes it very useable in the end. Only on internal roads I would advice to leave it off. On highways it’s very relaxing.

    Great videos! I also own an e-Niro and very happy with it. However, I have one issue and I was wondering if you have the same problem: a hissing sound (high pitched noise when accelerating or decelerating at low speeds. Would greatly appreciate your feedback on this issue. Thanks!

      Maybe you can hear the VESS (Virtual Engine Sound) inside the car ? If you are young you might be able to hear the power transistors switching or the vibration of the motor but this is inaudible for most.

    Hi, do you know why this consumption numbers are not the same as the ones displayed on the other screeen? I mean the red bar that displays the instant consumption. This numbers don't match.

      The one on the main display is per hour the one in the instrument cluster/tacho is per 100 km. 20 kwh on central display panel at 50 km/h will show 40 kw / 100 km on the instrument cluster/tacho

      I wash the car from time to time and if I think of it when I getting something from the booth I wipe it clean with some paper cloth.

      That might be because of the rounded shape of the camera which allows the water to drain over it. Try sticking a piece of black tape over it forming a kind of visor, I think that will solve the problem.

    Great video, hoping to get the new version of the E-Niro in a month or two. One thing I would say is that there is quite a lot of glare on the screen where the power and regeneration bars are. Was interested to see how much the auto regen gives you back. Great job!! 👍😁

      Jon Morales I will wiggle the wheel from time to time. On sharper turns the steering indicator turns to white and then you have to take over immediately, so no ‘AutoPilot’ freedom here. Lane changes are done by me.

    Does the smart cruise control stop and go in traffic for you, or do you have to take over

      It will do stop and go traffic but after 5-10 seconds of coming to a full stop you have to signal the car to start driving again. It will beep you to remind you that traffic has moved in front of you. The signaling takes place on the steering wheel's cc button or the accelerator pedal.

      @@gsmb2bcom The on-board charger has a maximum power of 7.2 kW. As soon as the charging station indicates that there is less power available it will lower the duty cycle in order to adopt to the available power. Also when the car reaches 100% SoC the power will be lowered by decreasing the duty cycle.

    UVO app has climate preheating under Dashboard>Remote Start>Power On button. Additionally it's under Remote>Climate>Start button.

      skyfox77 We live in North Sea climate and don’t often see anything below -5C. I still have the HVAC on Eco mode and that works most of the time. Sometimes I have to go for max defog in the front, but that’s all very manageable.

    how is the acceleration of the car? I like fast car and overtaking.....it seems the Niro can handle quite well?

      It’s OK. Not as fast as a Tesla Model 3, but you need VW Golf GTI or better to keep up.

    My heart skipped a beat at 22:25, I thought you had an accident! When you were following the BMW 7 series, I noticed some "ping-ponging" between the road markings. Is it also noticeable while driving?

    Three situations that deserve extra attention: 13:30 pulling over for the white van, overriding the cruise control to keep up speed, 15:50 for the pacing bringing you down to 80 on the "strange curve," and 17:20 for the lane departure warning at the exit ramp. I know not the most thrilling video but informative for understanding some of the eNiro's systems.

    1:25 I agree!. Why would Kia program the Niro to reduce speed when changing lanes? That's stupid!!!

      In my next video's I show the actual information screen on the lane keeping assistance. There you see what the car 'sees' If you keep a two 'blocks' distance the system does not have the tendancy to do it. You basicaly need to learn how to drive with it.

    I have the E-Niro on order, but I find in my Volvo XC60 D5 R-Design Pro if I use my knee to tap the wheel gently the warning goes off. Permanent hands free. 😊
