I have virtually the same bike for sale in New Zealand on Trade Me! Mine is a 1970 and has T100R on the engine, I'm intersted to know what your's has on it please?

Vin number was the engine number on early Harley's frame numbers were introduced in 71 off memory ,that might be why you can't find one .The engine number will give you year of manufacture . Sorry just looked it up 1970 was the first year for frame numbers

The handlebars are not ridiculous. They have a purpose. If you ride a long stretch and you get off the sporty near a pub you’ll immediately get served ten beers.

I bought a new XLCH back in '79 and in the mid 80's began riding BMW K bikes. Rode those for 38 years, and decided to buy an '03 Harley 1200 Sportster. I am impressed with the power, but there is a noise I don't like and it is quite loud. I believe it's valve train noise. I've had to 2 days now, and it's very strange going from a BMW to a Sportster. I wondered if I made a bad decision, but the more I ride it, I'm thinking I didn't. However, we never had all the valve train noise back in the 70's that I can recall. Maybe the AMF years were the best years. They weren't that bad.

Well, its a good starting point to make it a good one. Not sure i would have coated it red and even the indicator chrome stalks red.

Ironhead Sporty: The best sounding bike of that class ever. They were a workhorse too & you could go just about anywhere. Although this one is a bit tired sounding. Bizarre paint scheme.

Check the condenser by the points. Backfiring, spluttering are classic symptoms of a duff condenser.
