Why Season 3 Cannot Fix Netflix's Witcher
Lauren Hissrich has, for better and for worse, left her mark on the Witcher franchise. Her influence over the Netflix show and its ongoing trajectory can be felt in every facet of the production. How has her vision affected the show's interpretation of the Andrzej Sapkowski's inherently subersive work? How has her approach to adaptation affected the spirit of the books? And has she successfully brought to life this story that was meant to deconstruct the tropes Hollywood media are so fond of? (spoilers: she didn't)
This is the fifth and final part of a five part series focused on understanding Netflix’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy saga. Throughout, we will look at why certain decisions were made by the production team, why it may not have connected with audiences and make sense of the behind the scenes drama that has led many fans to grow increasingly frustrated at the direction the show is being taken in.

How Creative Differences Destroyed Netflix's Witcher
มุมมอง 72Kปีที่แล้ว
Netflix's Witcher is now infamous for losing its lead actor midway through the show, as Henry Cavill's Geralt was recast with Liam Hemsworth. However, such departures from this show are the norm, not the exception, revealing an incredibly hectic production cycle that was unpleasant to all involved and resulted in the sub-par product we see today. This is the fourth part of a five part series fo...
Why the Social Commentary in Netflix's Witcher Doesn't Work
มุมมอง 65Kปีที่แล้ว
Allegory is integral to the Witcher Saga. Every character, book and game aims to convey insight into very real world issues. Netflix's adaptation attempts to be as poignant as its source material, but ultimately lacks the empathy to go beyond its safe view of the world. This is the third part of a five part series focused on understanding Netflix’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy saga...
Netflix's Witcher Doesn't Understand Yennefer
มุมมอง 75Kปีที่แล้ว
Yennefer of Vengerberg is one of the most complex characters throughout the Witcher series, in no small part due to how much of her background is left to the imagination in the books. So when the show decided to expand on her origin, it paved the way for misinterpretations and contradictions with the intent of the source material. And this has lead to a character that is to many unlikeable for ...
Netflix's Witcher Doesn't Understand Destiny
มุมมอง 90Kปีที่แล้ว
Destiny is a concept at the very heart of the Witcher saga. Yet, Netflix’s adaptation does not seem to realize that destiny is not enough to make for a compelling story, let alone a good adaptation. Something more is needed. Much more. This is the first part of a five part series focused on understanding Netflix’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy saga. Throughout, we will look at why c...

That little segment about the writing team/lead around 2:56:45 reminded me of an article that said the original plan was to have Byek die early on and have Aya be the main protagonist, but corporate meddling forced them to keep him in (They pulled something similar in Syndicate, which is why Evie is sidelined there). This probably explains why she shows up sporadically, seems to have more character development than Bayek (Going from someone who wholeheartedly believes in Cleopatra to threatening to kill her), and is the one that does the most to move the overarching plot along Edit: And this kids, is why you watch the whole video before commenting, because the guy making said video just might talk about what you commented on

A wonderful analyzation but I’m confused how this ISN’T the woke agenda? Woke is the oppressor/oppressed narrative. Writers indoctrinated by the agenda write crap stories like this show runner did BECAUSE they are never taught to look beyond oppressor=bad, victim=good and if victims do bad things, it’s actually the oppressors fault. This woke worldview doesn’t allow for any nuance and or true exploration of humanity and such things like idk real history or ingroup/outgroup prejudice or political strategy and warfare before the 20th century… It’s not that the writing is bad because they try to inject woke into it, it’s that the woke narrative creates bad writers.

this could have been an amazing show. it really could have been but the writers inserts and the wokeness/race swaps put into it are parts that make it worse. other than geralt and ciri, the rest of the characters dont seem to have the look they should have in the books. (some others do i think) but look at who was just casted as regis. it makes no sense. yennefer's actress grew on me but it might not be for everyone. i doubt the books will ever be accurately adapted into a show like it was eh in season 1 but what if the last wish was portrayed exactly as it were? imagine it for every book. i would watch it over and over and over but unfortunately i doubt it will happen.

The problem isn't that Cavil wouldn't go along with the showrunners' version of the character. The problem is that the showrunners didn't share Cavil's passion for the franchise from the get-go.

It literally was so anticlimactic that I forgot I've watched the season 3 and after rewatching some episodes still couldn't remember I've watched them. I started to read the 3rd book, “Blood of Elves” only to discover that the whole Plot where Geralt is travelling with Yarpen and his crew has been flipped around so much that it is almost not recognisable. Ciri fighting all these soldiers, where in reality she couldn't even move her sword as Scoia'tael attacked. What is Yen doing there, anyway? I probably get all worked up over nothing, but it was such a cool scene in the book, and nothing but jumping around in the series. The more I read, the more I get angrier at the show, telling stories sucked out of a thumb. xD

Re Battle of Sodden Hill I think they didn't need the Battle of Cintra. But the Battle of Sodden Hill potentially could have been extremely useful if they'd spent more time on the sorceresses, since they're also key to later books. It's particularly important for Triss and Yen. But it's also a way to show other important people to the series who will later sit on the council and be Yen's frenemies and Garult's lovers.

  • @jenniferhanses
    @jenniferhanses 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

Mmm... my reading on destiny in the books was that it was something Gerault didn't want to believe in, but which eventually swallowed him whole, kicking and screaming the whole way down. He did not want to believe in destiny, but he was trapped in a time loop. The loop had to close. Your talking about them being together because of emotions means nothing because they were destined to be together. These were therefore feelings they were destined to have. A rebellion against destiny would be something more like Legends of Tomorrow, where two characters who are not destined to be together fall in love and are together, at least for a time. Putting emotions into a plot line about destiny is basically "Well, at least they're not unhappy with their destiny." Destiny also gets a bit iffy with Garalt and Yennifer, as she's essentially with her because he wished for their two lives to be together. She didn't really get a choice in the matter. And this is why they are so often on again and off again. Part of it is that time is long. But part of it is that they both have rough edges that don't quite mesh together. Garault saw her and saw an opportunity to be with someone who was as lonely as he was. They were looking for the same thing. But he never gave her the choice. In terms of the multiple timelines, I agree that they could have done more with the concept, but they didn't And I understood why they chose that format, as confusing as it was.

I've never realized how _unprofessional_ was Cavill's approach. He was hired to do the job of an actor, not a producer. He should have suppressed his ego. No matter how angry I am at the creators for disrecpecting the source material, I am _also_ angry at Cavill for disrespecting the source material. I wish he had shown more humility and didn't raise his vision of Geralt above the book Geralt.

Bayek voice acting was terrible. His wife too but his was the worst. A sub saharan accent was so out of place for the main coptic character. A north african sounding or someone more coptic would have created a much better performance. They also made classical egypt way more diverse with way more sub saharan africans in it. I also thimk showing how patriarchal ancient societies were is better than showing so many martial women. It shows how far we've come.

One problem i have here is saying r*pists can be redeemed but not explaining how. As a r*pist has harmed someone and those victims are having to live with the trauma for the rest of their lives. The r*pist isn't able to make up for it and can't undo the damage. I have never heard of anyone being called a former r*pist as no such thing exists. If you r*pe people then you are scum. There was an author who tried to redeem a character who r*ped 100's of women and girls and it was a terrible book. There is sexism in books and i think the show runners tried changing that. Just because the r*pist feels bad about what he has done, doesn't make it any better. A person may choose to forgive their abuser but forgiveness is not redemption by the way. So it's not like this character had done anything to make up for what he did and i don't see why you focused on that part. R*pe is something i have yet to see as a redeemable act. It is a type of violence done in a sexual manner and leaves people having to deal with the affects of it. Most of the perpetrators get away with it. Men also get r*ped and most keep it quiet so they deal with the trauma in secret. The abusers walk around acting like everything is normal. I just don't see it as redeemable and nobody has been able to explain how it can be redeemed. If you are a r*pist then it's your fault for choosing to do such disgusting acts to people. You cannot be redeemed for what you have done.
